Brett RatnerBrett Ratner might not have been the choice Hollywood was expecting when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their producer for the 2012 Oscars, but he certainly is an interesting one.

But the "Tower Heist" director has been known for his large-scale films, and the very elements of his filmmaking that have drawn fire from skeptics might be exactly what the Oscars need this year. Ratner, for his part, thinks he can bring something special to the biggest night in Tinseltown, something he's been complaining has been lacking in previous years. And with the failed attempt at drawing in a younger audience by hiring Anne Hathaway and James Franco as hosts last year, it seems like the Academy is seeking an alternate route.

So what can we expect Ratner to contribute to the awards show? We brainstormed a few things we hope happen at this year's event.

There were many surprises and snubs when it came to who was nominated for this year's Oscars, but one of the most interesting predicaments to come out of the announcement had to deal with one of this year's hosts. When James Franco and Anne Hathaway landed the hosting gig, many questioned whether this would be a problem as they both were contenders to be nominated for awards. As it turns out, Franco did.

This morning, it was announced that Franco had received a Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination for his work in "127 Hours." The film was also recognized with nods for Best Picture, Best Director, Adapted Screenplay and Original Score. Read More...

Despite every prediction about the Oscar race in the weeks leading to the announcement of the Academy Award nominations, there are always a few (wonderful) surprises that throw the whole thing off. This year was certainly no exception.

As last year's Best Supporting Actress winner Mo'Nique and Academy President Tom Sherak announced the nominations for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, there were some names (and numbers, for that matter) that were nothing short of shockers.

While it's no surprise that current movie-to-beat "The King's Speech" garnered the most nods today with 12, Joel and Ethan Coen's version of "True Grit" came in a close second with 10 nominations. The Western was all but entirely shut out at the Golden Globes, but its mass critical and box-office reception helped catapult it into an Oscar front-runner. Read More...

James Franco and Anne HathawayThe Academy Awards couldn't get Hugh Jackman to reprise his hosting duties from the 2008 Oscars, so why not bring his singing and dancing helper -- one Anne Hathway -- on as host instead?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has done just that, announcing that Hathway and James Franco will be sharing the stage as co-hosts of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards. The only thing that'd make us happier is if they confirmed a reprise to that '08 musical opening as well.

Hathaway has already proved her stage presence thanks to her Jackman assist two years ago, but we were a little surprised to read that the Academy producers chose her and Franco for the gig because of their performance hosting another popular television show: "Saturday Night Live." Apparently it's because Hathaway and Franco did such a great job there that the Academy felt they'd be able to be witty co-hosts like the many stand-up comedians who have emceed the show in the past. OscarsDidja hear?! The Oscars’ Best Picture category is expanding from a svelte, ultra-elite five nominees to a bloated, practically unfussy 10. Paging Mr. Paul Blart…

What else are we to make of this unlikely change. Was the public clamoring for more nominees? Were there really ten films in 2008 that deserved the undeniable cache of a Best Pic nod? I have nothing against expansion—Major League Baseball’s wildcard playoff system was a sublime instance of business needs meeting sports fan demands. But who demanded this? Read More...

Robert Pattinson at the 2009 Academy AwardsSome people watch the Oscars looking for Brad and Angelina, Jack Nicholson in the front row, or the annual musical tributes to the past year in film. Sunday’s ceremony, however, brought a new star to the game: Robert Pattinson.

It was a blast watching the “Twilight” heartthrob navigate the red carpet this year for one main reason: He’s still a normal guy. Yes, an abnormally good-looking normal guy, but Robert is every bit as self-deprecating, easily embarrassed, and endearingly sincere as any of us would be during our first time at an Oscar ceremony – and let’s hope no matter how big he gets, he stays that way. Check out behind-the-scenes photos from this year's Oscars here!

FROM NEWSROOM.MTV.COM: I've got a pretty bizarre job. I know this, because my friends and family constantly tell me this whenever my Facebook updates casually mention encounters with the likes of Charlize Theron and Stephen Baldwin (in my mind, all celebrities are created equal).

(Check out behind-the-scenes photos from this year's Oscars here!)

Still, the crazy and surreal meter went into overdrive for me last night when I stepped onto my first Academy Awards red carpet. First of all, don't be too jealous; my feet barely touched the carpet before I was relegated to the press area that literally was behind a 4-foot shrub. I can't blame the Hollywood elite. If I were Sean Penn, I'd want a barrier between me and Nancy O'Dell at all times too.

Sean Penn, Kate Winslet and Penelope CruzSure, you saw Will Smith mispronounce "outstanding" four times, Alan Arkin call out a nomination for "Seymour Philip Hoffman" and host Hugh Jackman take a little shot at "The Reader"'s low box-office receipts, but the Oscars had a lot more funny, awkward and touching moments that you didn't get to see. Lucky for you, our reporters were privy to them:

» Kevin Kline and wife Phoebe Cates strolled onto the red carpet before the show, only to hear the arrivals emcee call out, "Salma Hayek!" Phoebe looked confused, and the presumably embarrassed announcer quickly corrected himself, saying, "Sorry ... Phoebe Cates." Read More...

If Anne Hathaway thought she was lusted after before, just wait 'til the Internet audience gets a load of this. Yes it's true, one of the sexiest women in Hollywood is just like you, slouching at home watching cartoons. The similarities probably stop there however, but regardless the fact that Hathaway is now outed as a "Family Guy" and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" fan elevates her to a new level of cool.

The "Rachel Getting Married" actress gave us her television faves on the Oscars red carpet; check it out below and then click here to watch the rest of our red carpet interviews, including James Franco, Robert Pattinson and more.
