More than a decade after Johnny Depp took a trip into bat country in the adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," he is returning to the writer's substance-infused stories in the first trailer for "The Rum Diary." The rum certainly isn't gone in this film.

Depp stars as journalist Paul Kemp who moves to San Juan, Puerto Rico to work for the major newspaper The Daily News in the late 1950s. He gets swept into a tangled mess of love, jealousy, treachery and alcoholism that is reminiscent of Thompson's other work. And apparently somewhere along the line he drank 161 nips of rum.

Rachel WeiszRachel Weisz is following the yellow brick road, and it's leading her to… Jason Bourne's replacement?

Following up on last week's report that the Oscar-winning actress was in talks for a role in Sam Raimi's "Oz the Great and Powerful" comes word from Deadline that Weisz is in even deeper talks to join Jeremy Renner in "The Bourne Legacy." No details on who Weisz would be playing, sadly, and it's possible that she won't be able to pursue both projects due to overlapping shooting schedules. As always, stay tuned.

There's plenty more casting news past the jump, including Alec Baldwin's potential departure from "Rock of Ages" and Kiefer Sutherland's latest heist!

Alien invasions are never fun. Fun to watch, sure, but not fun to experience—which is why our hearts go out to the characters of "Battle: Los Angeles," who appear to be struggling through one of the fiercest alien invasions ever captured on film.

The previous trailers for "Battle: LA" gave us a very good sense of what we're in store for when the sci-fi action flick arrives in theaters next month, but it's the first full clip that really hammers home the ground-level intensity this film has to offer.

In case you missed the memo, "Battle: Los Angeles" is a war movie about an alien invasion. Except, since it's a war movie (featuring marines led by Aaron Eckhart) about, you know, aliens trying to colonize Earth rather than wiping out humanity and pilfering our natural resources, it's plenty different than "Independence Day."

Columbia Pictures once again lays this point on us in the latest trailer for the flick, offering up several more ohmygodwhattheeff moments and a broader take on the story than we saw in the previous trailers. That means less Eckhart, but a better portrayal of the narrative style of the film. Read More...

Los Angeles will survive the alien assault in this week's "Skyline"... if only so the city can be bombarded again in next March's "Battle: Los Angeles." Thankfully, it looks like L.A. will be a bit more prepared this time around, considering "Battle" is more of a war movie, sci-fi style.

The trailer doesn't give too much of the film's plot away, but it's fairly straightforward. Aliens descend on Los Angeles, and the Marines are called in to try to stop the invasion. In this case, the Marines are Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez and Michael Peña (and thousands of others, of course -- those are just the ones we're supposed to care about). What is most notable about the trailer is that it presents the film first and foremost as a gritty war movie; badass extraterrestrials just happen to be the enemies. Read More...

San Diego Comic-Con has gifted us with our first extended look at "Battle: Los Angeles," the alien disaster movie from director Jonathan Liebesman ("The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning") and starring Aaron Eckhart and Bridget Moynahan: first a viral campaign and then this afternoon's panel.

Before all this went down, though, we had a chance to chat with Moynahan about the film, and she had some surprising things to say — namely what separates "Battle" from previous alien invasion flicks.

"It's actually very emotional," she told MTV News. "I can't even tell you — when I saw parts of it recently, I was crying. It's just got such heart to the movie. The director shot such a beautiful movie, so hopefully the editing and everything is going to pull together, but it was a really good story." Read More...

Before diving in with the coming week's releases, let's take a quick look at last week's. I think the poll results usually paint a pretty telling picture of who is reading this blog. The weekend's big box office winner, Tyler Perry's "I Can Do Bad All By Myself," failed to pick up a single vote in the poll. "Sorority Row" took top spot in the poll (70% of your votes), followed in a distant second by "Whiteout" and "9," which were basically tied, at 15% and 13% respectively.

My takeaway is that you readers are on the younger side -- ie below 30, or at least not yet parents -- and that you prefer spectacle to schmaltz. That's definitely an overly broad generalization, but I do find the fact the weekend's biggest earner, by quite a wide margin I might add, didn't even pick up one vote in last week's poll. Now, let's take a look at what's in store this week... Read More...

Happy “Battle: Los Angeles” week, folks! We’ve been eagerly tracking this so-out-there-it’s-gotta-be-awesome project for awhile around these parts, and with Ne-Yo joining the cast it’s gotten even more interesting. Aliens, scandal-plagued rappers, Harvey Dent kicking ass -– as cameras begin rolling on the February 2011 flick, what more do you need?

One of the more interesting aspects of the film emerged earlier this year, when we interviewed filmmaker Jonathan Liebesman, who oversaw “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” and this year’s impressive Sundance thriller “The Killing Room.” At the time, the only actor who had come on board the aliens-invade-Los Angeles film was Aaron Eckhart, and Liebesman said that the star was planning to channel Dirty Harry. Aaron EckhartThe hardest thing about making an alien movie is finding new ways to depict your invaders; the hardest thing about being a leading man like Aaron Eckhart is finding new ways to reinvent yourself. These days, both struggles are being waged with “Battle: Los Angeles."

“We are doing our best to do something that hasn’t been done before,” said 29-year-old South African born director Jonathan Liebesman, best known for getting gory with “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” in 2006. “This is a more down and dirty alien movie. This isn’t like ‘Independence Day.’”

This time, Liebesman’s sci-fi action thriller centers on a marine platoon that must protect the City of Angels from alien invaders. Read More...

Aaron EckhartLast week, we brought you the news that Amber Heard would be romancing Johnny Depp (and showing a lot of skin in the process) in "The Rum Diaries." Now the rest of the cast has been filled out, which means Depp's Hunter S. Thompson project is finally becoming a reality.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Eckhart and Richard Jenkins have joined the cast of the 1950s drama. Eckhart will play Sanderson, a wealthy landowner who believes everything can be bought. Read More...
