Cabin in the Woods

We here at MTV Movies Blog love "The Cabin in the Woods." There is no way around it. We love it so much, in fact, that it's really important to us that you love it too. So in the lead-up to this Friday's release of "Cabin," we're going to tell you everything you need to know about the film from Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard.

But here's the thing. You're not supposed to know that much. We respect that as much as anyone else who has seen "Cabin," so here are the five things we can actually safely say about "The Cabin in the Woods."

The Story
The official production notes for "The Cabin in the Woods" tell you everything you'll need to know about the film before heading into the theater. "Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen." That's the official plot summary for a reason, so before you think, "Oh, that's a really boring premise," check yourself. That's the humor of the movie, so if you don't get it, maybe this isn't the movie for you.

Picture this: a maximum security prison gets overrun by the inmates, with correctional officers and other bystanders taken as hostages. One such hostage just so happens to be the President of the United States' daughter — and the only man who can save her is a former special forces operative with an agenda of his own.

Nothing too far outside the realm of blockbuster movie possibility, right? In the case of "Lockout," it gets better: all that aforementioned action? It takes place in space.

In certain hands, the far-out premise of "Lockout" could easily be fumbled — it could take itself too seriously, or it could wink way too hard at the viewer. Thankfully, "Lockout" was very much in the right hands from the very beginning (the hands of Luc Besson and his EuropaCorp studio to be precise), a fact that was very attractive to co-leads Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace in signing on for the film.

This week on The Video Score, we've got all your new major video releases including an Oscar winner and a horror movie people didn't think too much of. There are also three great classics coming out, two of which are on Blu-ray. "A Streetcar Named Desire" is our pick of the week, just edging out Georges "Papa Georges" Méliès' "A Trip to the Moon," which should seem very timely if you checked out "Hugo" last year.

Pick of the Week

Streetcar Blu-ray

"A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951)
Director: Elia Kazan
Cast: Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh

Story:
In the classic play by Tennessee Williams, brought to the screen by Elia Kazan, faded Southern belle Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh) comes to visit her pregnant sister, Stella (Kim Hunter), in a seedy section of New Orleans. Stella's boorish husband, Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando), not only regards Blanche's aristocratic affectations as a royal pain but also thinks she's holding out on inheritance money that rightfully belongs to Stella.

The latest Bond movie, "Skyfall," has been a long time in coming. But now the Sam Mendes-directed project which returns Daniel Craig to his role as James Bond is busy shooting in Pinewood Studios, and MTV News was lucky enough to be invited to the set to check out some of the action.

Apparently we haven't been the only ones desperate for some more 007. Craig admitted to MTV that he's been "kind of itching to get going for a while." But the "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace" actor promised that having Mendes take his time with the film and bring on actors like Javier Bardem will create "richer content" in the long run.

Nine years after the last sequel and 13 years after the original was released, Jason Biggs, Tara Reid and the rest of the gang had an “American Reunion” this weekend, as they looked back on their high school years with wistful nostalgia.

Yes, it may be shocking to some, but the '90s are now a good decade and some past us. Given Hollywood’s love for remakes and sequels, it’s already started turning towards the '90s well — the 80’s have already been well-plundered, after all. Besides “American Reunion,” there was, of course, the announcement that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels will reunite for a sequel to 1994’s uproarious “Dumb & Dumber.” Clearly, we’re in for an avalanche of '90s nostalgia for the next decade!

So, which '90s movies are ripe for a sequel? Here are five that we think would be great.

Ben Kingsley, one of the finest actors currently working, does not like Iron Man. Well, perhaps he likes the films Iron Man appears in, but he has it out for Ol' Shellhead himself, based on a new report that Kingsley's playing the villain in Shane Black's "Iron Man 3."

Kingsley's role remains under wraps, though it's said to be tied to Warren Ellis' six-issue "Extremis" comic book run. It's also not, apparently, The Mandarin, despite several clues pointing towards the ring-clad villain's ultimate involvement in the "Iron Man" movie franchise. Kind of a bummer, as Kingsley would be an excellent choice for an updated (see: not horribly racially offensive) version of the popular Marvel baddie.

I have a confession to make: I’m not a gamer. Never have been. You won’t find a review of “LEGO Star Wars” or notices about the latest patch for “The Old Republic” in this space. I don’t pay that much attention to the gaming galaxies of the Expanded Universe, but I just couldn’t escape the furor over the newly released “Kinect Star Wars.”

You probably know what I’m referring to; last week millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror about the Xbox game, specifically its “Galactic Dance Off” feature where, according to the game’s website, you can “dance for Jabba the Hutt and take on other favorite ‘Star Wars’ characters in 4 different locations.”

What seems to be getting most folks in a tizzy is the sight of Han Solo boogieing down to a remake of Jason Derulo's "Ridin' Solo" (called "I'm Han Solo") inside the very room in which Movie Han gets carbon-frozen in “The Empire Strikes Back.” Once again, charges of childhood rape are being thrown around: at Microsoft, Lucasfilm and, of course, George Lucas himself.

Celebrities, they're just like us! Turns out they also obsess and geek out over outstanding and/or guilty pleasure television like we do. The latest example is one Lindsay Lohan, who inadvertently confessed her love of "Homeland" as the reason she was at home glued to her TV set rather than at a L.A. nightclub last Thursday where she allegedly punched a woman in the back.

The most intriguing part of this story to me, as reported by TMZ, is not that Lohan was at home instead of at a nightclub but that she was watching "Homeland." How's that for an alibi? Everyone should be watching Showtime's expertly-crafted and acted drama, led by Claire Danes and the under-appreciated Damian Lewis, even problem-plagued former child stars.

This got me thinking about other random celebrity fans of shows - those who you wouldn't peg to be familiar with, let alone obsess over certain scripted and unscripted drama. Some unexpected pairings lurk beyond the jump!
