Jonas Akerlund is an odd duck amongst 2009 MTV VMA nominees with past Hollywood feature experience. He's been around for a long time, though not always as a director. In the early '80s, Akerlund was a member of the Swedish metal band, Bathory. His first gig directing a music video was for "Bewitched," by Candlemass (another Swedish metal outfit), in 1988.

Akerlund hit it big with his work for Roxette in the early '90s, and he went on to direct a number of well-received music videos for Prodigy ("Smack My B-tch Up"), U2 ("Beautiful Day") and Metallica ("Whiskey in the Jar"). He also did a number of videos for Madonna, including 1998's "Ray of Light," which earned him a Moonman for Best Direction. Check out Akerlund's video for Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" below, then hit the jump for more.

Next up in our 2009 VMA director spotlight is Marc Webb, who is also up for a Moonman in the Best Direction category. Webb has been in the game since the late '90s, though he only recently made the jump into feature film directing. His "(500) Days of Summer," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, scored a lot of buzz at Sundance earlier this year and has continued to score well with critics since its August 7 release.

For Sunday night's 2009 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, Webb hopes to pick up a statue for his work directing the video for Green Day's "21 Guns." Check out that video below and hit the jump to compare it with some footage for "(500) Days."

It might not seem obvious, but this Sunday's 2009 Video Music Awards on MTV (coverage begins at 8pm!) is going to have a heavy Hollywood presence. Yes, yes... we all know that "Twilight" stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will be presenting an expanded trailer for "New Moon." They're not who I'm talking about though.

See, a lot of music video directors these days have -- or soon will -- double-dip in the world of feature-length film. I'm going to be highlighting a few of them here on MTV Movies Blog in a series of Director Spotlight posts. First up is "I Am Legend" director Francis Lawrence, who's up for a Best Direction award for his work on Britney Spears' "Circus" video. Compare the video below with the "I Am Legend" trailer, embedded after the break.

This Sunday, the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards descend on New York City with a massive celebration at the legendary Radio City Music Hall. The red carpet coverage kicks off at 8pm, with a train of stars arriving, from Moonman nominees to high-profile presenters. With "Twilight" star Ashley Greene filling the role of celebrity fashion reporter this year, you can probably expect her to chat with her pals Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, who will be on hand to present a new trailer for "New Moon" during the show. It's not like that crew see each other all the time or anything.

As you might imagine, Radio City Music Hall is kind of a big deal in NYC. The venue's history and beauty attracts a lot of high-profile parties, even movie premieres. So to get you excited for this Sunday's red carpet show, we've put together a collection of photos from past Radio City gatherings, featuring stars from the likes of "Sex & the City," "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and more.
