It shouldn't come as any surprise to anyone who's been following the Harry Potter World Cup that the big three -- Harry, Ron and Hermione -- have made it into the Elite Eight of the competition. But things are definitely heating up with only hours to go before the Final Four are chosen, and mere days until the big reveal on Monday. Indeed, there's no guarantee that the big three will make it into the final round.

We're here with a quick status check on the big three (and one of their biggest rivals) as they continue on in the World Cup, racing their way towards the final rounds.

Harry PotterWelcome to MTV's Harry Potter World Cup! We've selected 64 of the best "Harry Potter" characters and matched them up in a series of duels for a chance at magical glory, but it's up to YOU to decide who the greatest "Potter" character of all time is in this pool of wizards and witches. Will the Death Eaters destroy Hogwarts, or will good triumph over evil? In the end, the choice is yours, so keep voting at MTV Movies Blog and make your voice heard!

After destroying Rufus Scrimgeour, defeating his dear cousin Tonks and absolutely obliterating Lord Voldemort, the Prisoner of Azkaban is looking very good going into this next round of the Harry Potter World Cup. Except there's one small problem -- a problem who goes by the name of Draco Malfoy. Winning Diagon Alley might not be so easy for Sirius Black after all.

Polls for all of the Elite Eight duels close at 12:01 AM EST on Friday (July 8), so start voting now!

(1) Draco Malfoy vs. (3) Sirius Black
Sirius has emerged as one of the strongest players in the entire World Cup, beating all of his competitors with a healthy lead every step of the way. But will Padfoot's luck run out in the face of Draco, the Slytherin student who begrudgingly took his place as one of Voldemort's many Death Eaters? The World Cup hasn't been easy for Draco, and it's not likely to get any easier for him now. Still, if there's a time for Malfoy fans to rally, it's now: Draco is one of the very last "bad guys" remaining in the competition, so if you're looking to insert some dark magic into the final rounds, you're running out of options.

Seven members of the Weasley family (not counting in-laws) entered the Harry Potter World Cup. Now, there's only Ron. After struggling in his first-round duel against Lavender Brown and, more recently, slugging it out with Fred, Ron is now just votes away from making the Final Four... if Rubeus Hagrid doesn't put an end to his World Cup hopes first.

(1) Ron Weasley vs. (2) Rubeus Hagrid
There are no easy choices to be made in the Elite Eight, but of all four duels, this one might be the toughest to predict. On one hand you have Ron, the tried and true best friend of Harry who's stuck with the Boy Who Lived through thick and through thin. On the other you have Hagrid, one of Harry's first and strongest connections with the wizarding world, not to mention the guy who finally killed the spare. Both Ron and Hagrid have had their ups and downs over the years, but I'm sure neither would relish the opportunity to knock the other out of this competition. Sadly, that's the situation they face: only one of these beloved characters can move along, and the choice is entirely in your hands.

Believe me, no one is more surprised than I am to see Remus Lupin in the Elite Eight. He's my personal favorite character in the series (did I mention he's the best?) but even I wouldn't have guessed that he'd beat Dumbledore in the Sweet 16. Despite that great and unexpected victory, Lupin's path towards eternal World Cup glory is far from finished: he'll have to sneak past the smartest wizard of her age in order to advance to the Final Four.

(1) Hermione Granger vs. (3) Remus Lupin
Days ago, I would have told you that Godric's Hollow was Hermione's for the taking, even if she'd gone up against Albus Dumbledore. Now, I'm less certain. Lupin didn't just beat Dumbledore by a handful of votes; he broke out with a healthy margin over the so-called greatest wizard of all time at the outset of their duel, and never looked back once. Hermione and her fans would be wise not to underestimate the appropriately rabid Lupin loyalists, who could put up quite a bit of resistance for one of Harry's closest friends.

He protected him in secret ever since the boy first set foot in Hogwarts, but that's not to say that Severus Snape always adored Harry Potter. Likewise, the Boy Who Lived had his fair share of problems with the Potions master over the years. Now, these longtime rivals turned unexpected allies have one last shot at each other, with only one wizard capable of moving onto the Final Four of the Harry Potter World Cup.

(1) Harry Potter vs. (2) Severus Snape
It's no surprise that either of these fan-favorite characters have made it this far into the tournament, but the outcome of this duel is anything but predictable. Yes, Harry is the main character of the series, and yes, his name inspires this very competition. But people love Snape, warts and all. Easily one of the most misunderstood heroes in all of "Potter" lore, chances are good that Severus gets more than a few sympathy votes here. Add too many of those to the pile, and Potter might have to watch the final rounds play out from the sidelines. The winner of Privet Drive is far from determined at this point.

Longtime "Harry Potter" actor Matthew Lewis, who starred in all eight movies as the eternally loveable if severely underestimated Neville Longbottom, joined us last week to make his pitch for why he should win the Harry Potter World Cup. But Matthew had a lot more to say about the tournament than merely assessing his own character's standing.

With just a few hours left to vote in the Sweet 16, Matthew was kind enough to share his thoughts on some of this round's other contentious duels, just as the Phelps brothers did at the outset of the tournament. Read on to see which characters Matthew thinks will make it to the Elite Eight.

Some say that revenge is a dish best served cold. Sirius says it's a dish best served Black. Having defeated his own cousin in an appropriately tight race, the wrongfully convicted Prisoner of Azkaban returns to the Harry Potter World Cup and has his sights set on Lord Voldemort, the evil sorcerer who just finished killing James Potter for a second time. The blood's about to spill...

Voting for all Sweet 16 duels closes on Wednesday, July 6 at 12:01 AM EST, so make sure to start voting now. You can follow all of the action right here.

(2) Lord Voldemort vs. (3) Sirius Black
Tom Riddle, you disappoint me. Sure, you were able to move past Moaning Myrtle and James Potter to make it into the Sweet 16, but not without a serious amount of difficulty. I mean, really... beating James by only two votes? That's the best you can do? Maybe the Dark Lord isn't up to the task when it comes to the Harry Potter World Cup. He'll certainly have to step up his game if he's to stand a chance against Sirius Black, one of the most widely worshiped characters in all of "Potter" thanks to his skills as an animagus, his closeness to Harry and his parents, and his tragic demise in "Order of the Phoenix." The falsely accused but ultimately redeemed Sirius could very well be the man to put an end to Voldemort's reign of terror once and for all.

The second round duel between old foes Molly Weasley and Bellatrix Lestrange was easily one of the hardest fought battles of the entire Harry Potter World Cup. Now, the dust has cleared, and history has been rewritten: Bellatrix moves on to the next round of the tournament. But is the wicked witch's bloodbath about to end at the hands of Draco Malfoy?

Voting for all Sweet 16 duels closes on Wednesday, July 6 at 12:01 AM EST, so make sure to start voting now. You can follow all of the action right here.

(1) Draco Malfoy vs. (4) Bellatrix Lestrange
Despite his number one ranking, Slytherin student and longtime Potter rival Draco Malfoy hasn't had an easy go of it in the World Cup so far. He struggled against Peeves the Poltergeist and got off to a tough start against "Goblet of Fire" veteran Fleur Delacour. Now, he faces his toughest opponent yet in the form of Bellatrix. This could very well be the end of the line for Draco… unless you, the voters, rally behind the two-time MTV Movie Awards Best Villain.
