Hobbit

The MTV Movie Brawl 2012 is officially on! After the initial play-in, wild card and Sweet 16 rounds, only eight movies remain to compete in a series of head-to-head single elimination matches in our March Madness-style bracket. In the end, only one of these flicks can be crowned the can't-miss movie of the year, and the choice is entirely up to YOU. Which movie will win the brawl for it all? If you aren't afraid of "The Woman in Black," you certainly should be. Ranked at number seven on the east side of the MTV Movie Brawl 2012 bracket, the Daniel Radcliffe starring horror film shocked onlookers by dethroning "Snow White and the Huntsman," considered a favorite in this competition thanks to the Kristen Stewart fan base and the film's crossover appeal with genre and fantasy fans. To call it an upset is a bit of an understatement.

But Radcliffe's latest still has its work cut out for it as "Woman" takes an "Unexpected Journey" towards the first installment of Peter Jackson's two-part "Hobbit," which has seen a tremendous amount of support from fans longing for a return trip to Middle-earth. Considering that Radcliffe was once rumored to take on the lead role of Bilbo Baggins in the "Lord of the Rings" prequels, this could shake out to be quite the grudge match.

After dominating the play-in round, "The Hunger Games" caught fire and left "Prometheus" in its wake. The maybe probably "Alien" prequel couldn't handle the fury of Katniss and Peeta, but who really can? Through the entire tournament so far, "The Hunger Games" has been the movie to beat, but now it faces some stiff competition from the big-budget sci-fi flick, "John Carter."

The power of a shirtless Taylor Kitsch should never be underestimated. It may have been the key factor in the take down of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" during the Sweet 16. But now comes the real test, as it battles "The Hunger Games" for a spot in the Final 4. Can "John Carter" pull out the upset against the seemingly unstoppable "Hunger Games"? Can anything stop Katniss on her way to the top? It's up to you to decide!

Darkness falls on this second match in the MTV Movie Brawl's Elite Eight. Batman bested Earth's Mightiest Heroes for a continued place in this tournament… but it's also the only remaining comic book in the competition, as "The Amazing Spider-Man's" web was cut short by the ferocious "Dark Shadows," Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's big screen adaptation of the cult classic gothic soap.

While "The Dark Knight Rises" came into the Brawl without the powerful punch we initially expected, Christopher Nolan's final trip to Gotham City has picked up steam in the last few days. But is that new surge of momentum enough to topple "Dark Shadows," which has been a frontrunner since the earliest days of the competition? Only one of these "Dark" films will move on to see the light of the Final Four. The choice, as always, is up to you.

If you thought the choice between "Cosmopolis" and "Bel Ami" was difficult, it gets worse. Robert Pattinson fans were literally divided in half with the seemingly impossible decision, ultimately voting the David Cronenberg thriller into the Elite Eight by only three votes. Not exactly a wide margin!

Still, if it was that hard to choose between two indie Pattinson projects, how can fans possibly pick between "Cosmopolis" and the final round of the "Twilight" films? On the one hand, "Cosmopolis" represents the next stage in Rob's career, a life after "Twilight." On the other hand… it's "Breaking Dawn," guys! The grand finale! It's what we've all been waiting for! Not an easy decision, to say the least, but it's a decision that needs to be made all the same. Good luck, voters — you're going to need it.

There is life after "Harry Potter." There is life after "Twilight." Even if it doesn't always feel that way for fans, just look at lead actors Daniel Radcliffe and Kristen Stewart as examples. Both stars are leaving the wizards and vampires behind for new pastures with their next sure-to-be hits, "The Woman in Black" and "Snow White and the Huntsman." But only one of them can continue on in our brawl...

(7) "The Woman in Black" Vs. (2) "Snow White and the Huntsman"
Radcliffe's come a long way since playing the Boy Who Lived. His dancing days on Broadway are behind him, and now he's about to face some true terrors in "Woman in Black," his horror film debuting in February. But is it enough of an about-face to off-set his Movie Brawl opponent, Kristen Stewart's "Snow White and the Huntsman"? It's not just Stewart fans lining up for this badass take on the classic fairy tale, after all. Genre geeks and fantasy fans are coming on board as well, especially after the epic trailer that dropped late last year. Already proving to be one of the most contentious brawls of the Sweet 16, the outcome of this battle is truly anyone's guess.

It's a veritable retelling of David versus Goliath in this Sweet 16 match. (3) "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" Vs. (6) "The Perks of Being a Wallflower"
Ask and ye shall receive! After winning its way into the tournament via the Wild Card round, "Perks" proved its staying power by breaking all the way into the 16-film bracket. But does the Logan Lerman and Emma Watson-starring adaptation have enough power behind it to topple "The Hobbit," Peter Jackson's long awaited return to the world of Middle-earth? Fans have been waiting since the closing moments of "Return of the King" for the tale of Bilbo Baggins' greatest adventure, and this year, it finally arrives. What chance does "Perks" stand against such a highly anticipated event? Well... this is the brawl for it all, folks. Surprises are bound to happen, and "The Hobbit" could very well become an unexpected casualty.

Two action movies, each equipped with extraordinary history, each brimming with A-list talent. Across the two films, we have star names including Taylor Kitsch, Bruce Willis, Bryan Cranston, Dwayne Johnson... the list goes on. But despite the impressive feats (and a humorous shared connection) between the two, only one of these movies can survive into the next round. Which will it be? Step into the arena and find out!

(4) "John Carter" Vs. (5) "G.I. Joe: Retaliation"
Fans have been waiting for a very long time (like, nearly one hundred years) for a big-screen adaptation of Civil War veteran John Carter's adventures on Barsoom. Taylor Kitsch is the man to bring Carter to life, under the watchful eye of Pixar favorite Andrew Stanton. Fans came out to support "John Carter" very early and very often in the MTV Movie Brawl, but a surprising last-minute surge of votes also poured out on the "G.I. Joe" sequel's behalf. That "Retaliation" trailer was all kinds of awesome, immediately washing away the bad taste of "Rise of Cobra" from many fans' mouths. The battle of "John" versus "Joe" is sure to be an epic showdown, if for no other reason than it represents a battle between "Friday Night Lights" favorites Taylor Kitsch and Adrianne Palicki... though this time, "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose" won't hold up for one of these competitors.

Two heroines enter the ring on day two of the MTV Movie Brawl 2012's Sweet 16. In one corner, bow and arrow in hand, is Katniss Everdeen. Opposite her is the currently more mysterious Elizabeth Shaw, a scientist searching for the secrets of the universe. Both powerful figures, no doubt, but only one of them will escape the arena with their respective movie still competing in the brawl for it all.

(1) "The Hunger Games" Vs. (8) "Prometheus"
After an astonishing round one performance that stopped just short of receiving the highest amount of votes, "The Hunger Games" is well positioned as a favorite in this competition. Legions of tributes have rallied behind the upcoming adaptation as their must-see movie of 2012 — it certainly doesn't hurt that "Hunger Games" is all about competition to begin with. Besting this juggernaut is no easy task. But don't discount Ridley Scott's long awaited return to the science fiction realm with a film that most likely is connected to "Alien" in some way, shape or form. With a stellar cast led by Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender, "Prometheus" could start quite the fire here and take "Hunger Games" out much earlier than expected.

It's Spider-Man versus a bat man, but this isn't a superhero showdown. This is an all-out fight to the finish between Tim Burton's latest collaboration with his go-to leading man and the return of one of the most famous New Yorkers of all time.

(7) "The Amazing Spider-Man" vs. (2) "Dark Shadows"
It's an unlikely battle, but only one movie will leave standing. Will it be Andrew Garfield's debut as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man? Or will it be Johnny Depp as the vampiric patriarch in this big-screen adaptation of the classic soap opera? Superhero flicks have struggled throughout the play-in round, and the power of Depp is hard to deny. It's up to you to decide whether you're more excited for swinging around the New York skyline or the occasional Captain Jack drinking something a little bit deadlier than rum.
