4. "My Sister's Keeper" ($5.1 million)
5. "Up" ($3.9 million)

Some weekends, it's easy to predict what's going to come out on top! "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" topped our poll, and it destroyed the charts to take number one with $36.7 million. That would be enough to qualify it as a summer hit, but since it's debut was actually on Wednesday, that's just a drop of the bucket. Read More...

Transformers: Revenge of the FallenYes, yes... we get big explosions and giant fighting robots starting this Wednesday. First let's talk about last week. Your votes have been tallied, and most of you -- 34% to be precise -- picked "Year One," which flopped in at number four on the weekly charts with a $20 million box office take. What gives, people? Oh wait... I missed "Year One" too.

No, my $9.50 ticket price (thank you indie theater) instead contributed to the $27 million take for "The Hangover." The weekend's big box office winner was "The Proposal," which snagged 24% of your votes. I apparently misunderestimated the appeal of a Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds-led rom-com. Also, I made up the word "misunderestimated." Okay, fine... it wasn't me. "Dead Snow" rounded out third place with 20%; I hope you 20-percenters enjoyed it. I can't wait. Read More...

UPWhile Friday night audiences were hungry for R-rated raunchiness, and propelled "The Hangover" to the top spot with a take of $16.5 million, box office analysts were predicting that a family-themed flick such as "Land of the Lost" -- which reviews describe as surprisingly family-unfriendly -- might overtake it with Saturday grosses. It was "Up" that triumphed over all, smacking "The Hangover" down to the #2 spot. Saturday saw Disney/Pixar's latest bring in another $44.2 million dollars at the box office, meaning it will probably end the weekend with a firm grasp on the #1 spot.

"The Hangover" may have lost out to Pixar's flying house fable, but it is enjoying a strong opening nonetheless. The Vegas escapade has now brought in $43.2 million, making it the third highest opening for an R-rated comedy, behind only last year's "Sex in the City" and "American Pie 2" in 2001. Read More...

The Hangover
It looks like Friday night audiences enjoy a raunchy comedy before heading out to start working on their own future hangovers. Variety reports that Warner Bros' "The Hangover" brought in $16.5 million on its first day out, making it the second-best opening take for an R-rated comedy, and a personal best for director Todd Phillips. Like any good party, it's not relying on star power, but is enjoying a solid buzz of positive reviews and enthusiastic word-of-mouth.

"The Hangover" eclipsed Will Ferrell's "Land of the Lost," which opened to only $7.2 million, placing it at #3, behind Pixar's "Up." The re-imagining of the classic '70s Sid and Marty Krofft-spawned TV show opened to mixed reviews, with many of the negative observations focused on how family unfriendly the movie really is. Parents are still bringing their chldren to "Night at the Museum" Battle of the Smithsonian" however, which is riding close to "Lost" with Friday earnings of $4.5 million. Read More...

'Star Trek'Much to the chagrin of the hardcore Trekkies out there, this weekend, just about everyone played the role of a "Star Trek" geek, as J.J. Abrams' revamp of the classic sci fi franchise surprised even the number crunchers at Paramount with a jaw-dropping $76.5M opening weekend (which included Thursday showings) -- exceeding the studio's earlier high hopes of a $75M debut, and well surpassing the safe-bet $50M estimate going into the film's wide release.

According to Deadline Hollywood Daily, the film's box office take this weekend -- which is currently being cited as official numbers from Paramount -- proved that "Star Trek" not only attracted those die-hard fans of the beloved TV and film series, but also pulled in healthy numbers of casual viewers who don't know a Romulan from a Talosian. Clearly, overwhelming critical acclaim coupled with strong word of mouth played a huge role in the film's success, as the film will easily become the #1 movie in America, and hopefully setting a course for more "Star Trek" films in the future. 'Star Trek'Call it a foregone conclusion, but if we learned anything from last week's opening numbers for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," it's that very little will keep the geek contingent away from the multiplex this summer. So when J.J. Abrams' insanely-anticipated "Star Trek" revamp beamed into theaters on Thursday night, we knew it was going to open big, but no one -- including industry analysts, apparently -- predicted the types of numbers the film has garnered so far.

Indeed, according to sources close to Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily, "Star Trek" has pulled in some rather surprising figures since it opened wide on Thursday night, to the tune of an estimated $32M over the past two days. Granted, we won't have official numbers until after the weekend, but should these types of numbers continue to stay true, the sci fi epic could hit the high watermark of $75M predicted earlier by Paramount execs. 'Star Trek' director J.J. AbramsLast weekend, moviegoers proved that neither swine flu scares nor rough-cut leaks nor tight budgets would keep fans from getting their fix at the multiplex, as "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" kicked off the summer movie season with an impressive $87M opening. Likewise, for a vast number of summer film fans, seeing how much a potential blockbuster makes on its opening weekend is almost as fun and exciting as actually watching them -- and J.J. Abrams' ridiculously-anticipated "Star Trek" reboot looks to be no exception.

That being said, now that "Star Trek" has opened wide after last night's showings, let the prediction game begin! According to a post over at Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily, early estimates show the film pulling in upwards of $9M last night, thus setting a course for a possible $75M weekend gross. But with a staggering number of good reviews for the film, coupled with an equally incredible number of showtimes around the globe, will "Trek" surprise the odds-makers? Read More...
