The streak stays alive as James Cameron's "Avatar" won its fourth straight weekend victory at the box office, taking a commanding first place lead worth $48.5 million. Since its opening weekend, "Avatar" has grossed a domestic cumulative total of $429 million to become the seventh biggest movie of all time in North America. The weekend's foreign gross of $143 million puts the worldwide total at $1.34 billion, inching ever closer to the $1.84 billion record held by "Titanic." Read More...

'Avatar'The question is no longer whether or not James Cameron's "Avatar" will earn back its production budget, as the film's recent ascension past the $1 billion worldwide threshold addressed that factor rather decisively. Instead, the question has become whether or not Cameron will top himself.

For more than a decade now, "Titanic" has comfortably held the distinction of being the highest grossing feature film of all time, both domestic and worldwide. But in case you haven't noticed, there's a not-so-little iceberg called Pandora, filled with Na'vi and other dangerous indigenous creatures, heading straight for Cameron's previously established "Titanic" — and judging by the box office numbers, it's entirely possible that "Avatar" could sink the boat. 4. "It's Complicated" ($18.7 million)
5. "The Blind Side" ($12.7 million)

As expected based on Friday night's numbers, "Avatar" earned its third straight weekend box office victory with hardly any competition from its theatrical rivals. James Cameron's science fiction epic earned $68.3 million from Friday to Sunday, setting the box office record for a film in its third weekend in theaters. The final Sunday tally brings "Avatar's" domestic total to a walloping $352.1 million, with an even more massive foreign intake of $670.2 million. Read More...

Moviegoers are proving that Pandora is a planet worthy of multiple visits, as James Cameron's "Avatar" managed a first place finish on Friday evening, well on track for its third weekend victory in a row.

Cameron's 3D science fiction fantasy took in $25 million on Friday, bringing the movie's current domestic tally to $308.8 million in just fifteen days. Aside from "Avatar," only two other films have crossed the $300 million threshold quicker — "The Dark Knight" in ten days and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" in fourteen. Read More...

This holiday weekend, "Sherlock Holmes" fell victim to one of the classic blunders, and no, it wasn't: "Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line." Instead, Warner Bros. and the decision makers behind the sleuth supreme's onscreen rebirth made the mistake of going up against James Cameron's "Avatar," the 3D action epic that won first place for its second week in a row. This weekend's battle of the blockbusters opened on Christmas Day yesterday in a close contest. Director Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" just barely edged "Avatar" out of the top spot, with $24.9 million in ticket sales to the sci-fi epic's $23.5 million. Estimates pin both with a $70 million weekend, but the James Cameron flick has been turning in strong daily numbers, so a shortfall isn't out of the question. Read More...

Blizzards are powerful forces to be reckoned with, but so are the natives of Pandora. The two forces went head-to-head this weekend as "Avatar" debuted worldwide alongside one of the worst snowstorms to hit the American Northeast in a decade, but not even the formidable weather could take down director James Cameron's return to feature filmmaking.

In its first weekend in theaters, "Avatar" managed to earn $73 million nationwide, combining with foreign box office results for a $232.2 million total. Variety describes the result as "the best global launch ever for a non-sequel," despite being the second best December launch behind Will Smith's "I Am Legend." It's unclear how much the bad weather effected "Avatar's" final domestic tally, but the coming holiday weekends — both Christmas and New Year's Day conveniently fall on Fridays this year — should help bolster the movie's continued success. Director James Cameron stepped away from feature filmmaking following the success of "Titanic," vowing to return once technology caught up with his imagination. That promise was fulfilled on Friday with "Avatar," Cameron's latest sweeping epic that debuted in first place on Friday evening. Read More...

There's no scientific proof that kissing a frog can turn the creature into a prince, but the exchange of cold-hard cash for theater admission can certainly turn a frog-centric film into a royal hit. Such was the case with "The Princess and the Frog," Disney's animated picture that easily won first place at the box office this past weekend. Read More...
