Who We're Thankful In 2009: J.J. Abrams, Chris Pine And The Triumphant Return Of 'Star Trek'

FROM MTV.COM: With a worldwide box-office haul of $384 million, "Star Trek" was one of the biggest movies of the year. But more important than its cash haul was the mere fact that director J.J. Abrams pulled the franchise from the cinematic dustbin and gave it a sleek, big-budget sheen. "Trek" was finally back, and perhaps it was cooler than it'd ever been. A lot of the credit for the cool factor goes to Chris Pine, who took on the iconic role of James T. Kirk and made it his own.

We at MTV News couldn't be more grateful that the U.S.S. Enterprise is once again patrolling outer space, which is why Abrams and Pine are two of the entertainers we're most thankful for in 2009. In a recent chat with MTV News, both these guys reflected on the experience of making "Trek," revealed some secrets about the project that we never knew and talked about the future of the franchise.

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Natalie Portman has a lot to look forward to in Kenneth Branaugh's "Thor" film, which she's scheduled to begin production on soon as Jane Foster. Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba and Chris Hemsworth are all confirmed to be starring at her side, but Portman dropped a potential casting bombshell this weekend while promoting her new film "Brothers." "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" star Kat Dennings may have a role in "Thor" as well.

"Well I'm really excited," Portman told MTV News. "Kat Dennings is going to be in it with me and she's a good friend and an amazing actress, so I'm looking forward to that."

Twilighters Expect Great Things From 'Eclipse'

"I didn't know if ['New Moon'] was going to be any good, where I feel like 'Eclipse' is going to be epic," Jordana de la Cruz gushed to MTV News after catching "New Moon" on opening night. "And they kiss in it, Jacob and Bella!"

As you'll see in this exclusive clip, featuring the Fox kids Ash (Jason Schwartzman) and Kris (Eric Anderson) as they deal with a bully. A bully who isn't all that he's cracked up to be, apparently.

Twilighters React To The 'New Moon' Ending

FROM MTV.COM: "New Moon" director Chris Weitz seems pretty pleased with the way he ended the second movie in the "Twilight Saga." But the fans who have already gotten a chance to see the movie are still reeling from Weitz's directorial decision. Not to give too much away, but some said it wasn't the conclusion they'd expected.

"I was really surprised by the ending, the way they kept us hanging like that," Jordana de la Cruz from Rhode Island told MTV News, after seeing a midnight screening in New York. "I hated it, but I liked it at the same time."

'Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' Director Rob Marshall Talks Johnny Depp, 'A Fresh Approach'

FROM MTV.COM: When "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" was announced for a summer 2011 release, fans went wild. Then the project hit rough waters following the departure of studio chief Dick Cook, a big supporter of "Pirates" star Johnny Depp. The Jack Sparrow actor subsequently expressed hesitation about continuing with the series.

Still, the project sails forward. Depp's not a lock until he signs off on the script, which he hasn't yet seen, but Captain Barbossa actor Geoffrey Rush told MTV in late September that he's been told to keep his schedule open for cameras to roll next spring.

Midnight Screening Attendees Prefer 'New Moon' To 'Twilight'

FROM MTV.COM: November 20 has been a long time coming for devotees of the "Twilight" saga, and at a movie theater in Times Square, fans from around the world congregated long before midnight to witness Chris Weitz's adaptation of "New Moon," the second book in Stephenie Meyers' series. While there were who were disappointed ("It did not live up to expectations at all," griped Melissa Paipan from Manhattan), the general consensus was that it was, as Jordana de la Cruz from Rhode Island gushed, "the best movie in the entire universe and more."

"We bought our tickets ... literally, the day they came out," Lauren from Brooklyn told MTV News. Many who attended the midnight screening said they purchased tickets as early as September. Many had also prepared for the occasion by re-reading passages from the novel, watching the movie's trailers online, and re-watching the first movie.
