A few weeks back, Marc Guggenheim departed his role as co-showrunner of "FlashForward," leaving the job solely to co-creator David Goyer. The move came as a surprise to many, considering the critical approval that the show has received. Goyer himself touts tonight's episode as the best installment yet. Sure there are challenges, but that is true of every show on television.

Many have wondered how Guggenheim's exit might effect the upcoming slate of episodes. Goyer has a great background in film and TV; his writing on Chris Nolan's "Batman" films revived the ailing franchise and he executive produced the underrated TV series "Threshold." "FlashForward" is his biggest TV project yet, but he brings a lot of experience to the table and will be fine without Guggenheim. Besides, Goyer told MTV in a recent interview that the departure was hardly a surprise — indeed, it was always part of the plan.

"The deal with Marc — and I'm very grateful to him in terms of helping us get going and using his brain to break stories — he had a development deal with ABC to develop pilots, so that was always something we were going to have to contend with," Goyer told MTV News.

"The other complication when we got started was our co-executive producer Lisa Zwerling went on maternity leave two months into our show," he elaborated. "She just came back three weeks ago, so when she came back, we were a little top heavy. Marc wanted to develop other things, so we figured that that was the best time to transition out."

As of right now, Goyer is captaining the "FlashForward" ship without a co-showrunner, but his spirits remain high.

"So far so good," he said. "The hardest thing is that, aside from directing episodes, I end up directing pick-ups and things like that every couple of weeks for a day or two. Whenever I'm doing that, I'm out of the room, so that's when we're stretched the thinnest. [But] it's possible that we may bring in someone else, or perhaps at the very end of the season after ['FlashForward' co-creator Brannon Braga] is done with '24,' he may come in again."

Of course, this is a business and numbers often dictate changes even when quality clearly isn't an issue. It's an old story on television, and "FlashForward" is just as susceptible as anyone else. Last week's episode posted the lowest numbers yet, but in fairness it aired during a particularly divisive World Series matchup between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies.

"There's no way to know for sure if the World Series was a factor or not until the next few episodes air," admitted Goyer. "Who knows. You'll drive yourself crazy doing too much monday morning quarterbacking. But I know our DVR numbers are through the roof and once you factor those in, we're pretty healthy. We're not a home run — I don't know what you'd call it — a modest hit, or something like that. We're certainly healthy enough to have earned a full season. ABC is assuming we'll be back for a second season and we're already talking about that. I feel that we'll be around for another season."

With Goyer now helming the great ship "FlashForward," are there any changes you'd like to see him make, if any? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or on Twitter!

My long-standing unusual relationship with Charlize Theron has been well documented on this website. For those flabbergasted, that I, a 5'9'' (NOT 5'8'' as some would have you believe) nebbishy dork could have any kind of a rapport with one of the most desirable women on the planet, well in most cases you'd be right. But doesn't the fact that we have something, anything, give all of us hope? Dreams can come true, my friends.

To bring most of you up to speed, here's all you need to know from my previous four interviews with Charlize. A) she likes to call me really vulgar things. B) we have enjoyed chatting about "The Hills" ever since I once made her look like "a nana" for not knowing anything about the MTV cash cow. C) she's just generally awesome, flirty, saucy, and fun.

The below came on the red carpet for Charlize's latest "The Burning Plain," now in theaters (go see it! support our favorite actress!) and it's not our best collective work but still, how many times do you get to see an Oscar winner say "butt naked"?

Zombies, vampires and supernatural masked serial killers: these are the monsters currently revving popular culture's collective engine. That wasn't always the case though. It wasn't so long ago that moviegoers were foaming at the mouths for eyepatches and hook hands, but as Bruno would say, pirates are sooo 2007.

Of course, don't let Disney, Jerry Bruckheimer or Johnny Depp hear you say that -- they're still hard at work on a fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" adventure. Or Steven Spielberg for that matter. But there's another filmmaker in Hollywood who is ready to set sail with the scurvy genre, someone you probably wouldn't expect to have an interest in Davy Jones' locker: none other than "Halloween 2" director Rob Zombie.

"I would love to make a pirate movie," Zombie told MTV News. As a filmmaker best known for gore-tastic fare like "House of 1000 Corpses" and its follow-up, "The Devil's Rejects," Zombie's exploration of the Caribbean waters doesn't seem like a natural fit on the surface -- but if there's one thing about Zombie that everyone can agree on, it's that he's full of surprises.

"I actually tried pitching a pirate movie way before 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' and everyone was like, 'Pirate movies don't work,'" he recalled. "You almost have to wonder -- as soon as someone says a certain genre doesn't work, that's exactly the movie you have to make."

Zombie already has two films in the pipeline -- the recently announced remake of "The Blob" and his awesomely named "Tyrannosaurus Rex" -- so his take on the pirate genre is at least momentarily lost at sea. Should he ever find the time to explore the idea further, however, you can expect Zombie's pirates to have a lot more grit than Disney's swashbucklers.

"The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies were cool and Johnny Depp's awesome, but I thought, let's make one that's really so nasty that it's real," Zombie described. "But I don't know if people want that."

Uh, Mr. Zombie, I want that, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Is that Rob Marshall directing "Pirates of the Caribbean 4" deal set in stone? Because a Zombie-helmed Jack Sparrow adventure would be fan-freaking-tastic.

Would you care to see a pirate film from Rob Zombie? What direction do you think he could take the genre? Set sail towards the comments section and let us know!

While I'm certainly curious about Rob Zombie's further take on the Michael Myers mythology in "Halloween II," it's his original material that interests me most. One such project is "Tyrannosaurus Rex," a film that's been rarely discussed but has one of the single most ridiculously awesome (albeit unsafe for work) posters I have ever seen.

But Zombie was gracious enough to discuss the movie with MTV News, if only to clear the air on some rumors -- namely, that "Tyrannosaurus Rex" won't be based on a pre-established property, despite some speculation to the contrary.

"It's totally original," he said of the film. "I don't know if that's next. It's what I'd like to be next, but not sure if it is though. Yeah, that's totally original."

Now that "The Blob" has been announced as Zombie's next film, it'll probably be a little while before we get to see exactly what "Tyrannosaurus Rex" entails. But if you're expecting a Zombie-directed take on "Jurassic Park," you're in for a disappointment.

"It's a story about a washed-up prize fighter who goes to prison for like 14 years and comes out, and his life is of course destroyed," he described. "He's basically this born-to-lose maniac who can't control himself, and he gets into the world of underground fighting."

Whether or not the underground fighting in question focuses on dinosaurs ripping each other to shreds remains to be seen, though we can all remain hopeful. But one thing the film won't showcase is a strict attachment to the horror genre.

"It's not really a horror movie," Zombie clarified. "Probably all of the movies I'll make will be dark and violent, but it's not a horror movie."

So, it's not a horror film and unless something really wacky is going on, it's probably not a dinosaur movie, either -- so what exactly is "Tyrannosaurus Rex" supposed to be?

"It's kind of like if 'Every Which Way But Loose' was a serious movie," the director joked. "Minus the monkey."

What do you think of "Tyrannosaurus Rex"? Should we see this before "The Blob," or are you fine with waiting for the mysterious project? Let us know which film you'd like to see first in the comments section!

It's one of the most beloved films of the 1990s, and it helped launch the career of one of Hollywood's biggest stars. Now, nearly two decades after Robert Redford's "A River Runs Through It" swept into theaters, the fan-favorite flick is receiving the HD treatment with a remastered Blu-ray collector's edition. It was for that reason that we left New York City recently and traveled north to join actors Tom Skerritt and Craig Sheffer in the serenity of rural Vermont.

Set in early-20th Century America, "A River Runs Through It" is an emotional tale of two teenage brothers (Sheffer and Brad Pitt, in one of his first roles) coming of age under the umbrella of their strict minister father (Skerritt). The common bond among the trio is fly fishing in the great Blackfoot River, and as the brothers grow and drift further apart, their time spent fishing together becomes an even more integral shared experience.

In a sea of big-budget fare, the film stood out for its simplicity and its rawness, and was awarded with three Oscar-nominations, winning one. But it wasn't only embraced by moviegoers; the cast also found themselves immersed in a modern day treasure.

"It turned out every way I hoped it would," recalls Skerritt. "And that would mean it would be a classic film. These films hold up forever. You can look at them again and they'll always touch you on a different level."

"It was a complete life-changer," echoes Sheffer. "But more than that now, how many films do you do that are actually art? When you have a movie that special and that lasts like that, and has such a great emotional depth, you certainly after twenty years you learn to appreciate it."

Fans will also have a lot to appreciate with the new Blu-ray release. Redford filmed a new mini-documentary about the making of the film, collecting anecdotes from Sheffer and assorted castmembers, including cinematographer Philippe Rousselot -- whose work earned him an Academy Award -- and the family of Norman Maclean, the author of the semi-autobiographical novella upon which the film is based. Featurettes on fly fishing and on the conservation efforts on the Blackfoot River are also included, along with a 30-page booklet containing script notes, essays and an additional interview with Redford.

Reflecting back on the experience, Skerritt perhaps states it best. "It's the beauty of the cast, the artwork, the rhythm," he says. "The rhythm of nature is what the movie is about -- and the sound of that title, 'A River Runs Through It.'"

The popular FX sitcom "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" was born as a low-budget pilot in 2005. The quirky cast of bar patrons who inhabit Paddy's Bar in South Philadelphia impressed network execs enough for a seven episode first season to be ordered, for an August 2005 premiere. Four years and four completed seasons later, the show is still going strong, with the fifth season premiere set for September 17. We got to sit down with "Sunny" star Kaitlin Olson at San Diego Comic-Con last week, who talks about what's next for the show and what she's been doing with her free time.

MTV: What’s going on in the fifth Season of Sunny?

Kaitlin Olson: What’s going on?! There’s so much going on—we tackle the economy this season—we take the economy head on. Charlie starts to market kitten mittens, and we do a lot of Paddy’s Pub’s merchandising, hopefully we’ll be able to sell a lot of the stuff on line—because I really like it—there’s one thing in particular that I am excited about but I can’t talk about it. Sweet D gets boyfriend this season so that’s really fun. We wrestle for the troops—we do a show for the troops to show our appreciation—Rowdy Roddy Piper is in that episode and it’s AMAZING!

MTV: What else?

KO: Sweet Dee gets a part in an M. Night Shamalayan movie, so it’s pretty great, a pretty great year…

MTV: We’ve heard rumors of an octomom episode… what’s that all about?

KO: Dee decides to become a surrogate in one of her many ideas to raise money in the bad economy—she’s always scamming to make money in all the episodes. We’re always trying fun ways to make more money.

MTV: You also just finished a feature called right?

KO: Yeah, it was really great, it’s called Leap Year, and it stars Amy Adams and I play her best friend…. There’s this tradition in Ireland that every leap year women are allowed to propose to a man, their boyfriend and he is obliged to accept. So she flies to Dublin to visit her boyfriend who is there on a business trip to propose. It was really fun, Amy’s so great to work with… so I was flying back and forth between filming IASIP and Leap Year… and I have an independent film that I shot last year that was just in limited release called Weather Girl. I get to play another really stupid person—I like find it fun to make fun of stupid people (laughs). So it’s been a busy year.

MTV: Did you do anything interesting in Dublin while you were there?

KO: I literally was shooting both things so I would fly in for the day and shoot and fly back and then turn around and do it again. I drank Guinness with Amy Adams… that was about the most fun.

MTV: So we’re here at Comic-Con and I have to ask who’s your favorite superhero?

KO: I was always desperately in awe of Wonder Woman, the Lynda Carter TV show; I just never got over her special skills. Like how amazing her aim was that any bullet you fired would just end up around her wrist. That was sooo cool.

MTV: If you could play a superhero, who would you want to play?

KO: A hero? Oh shit! That’s easy, the greatest superhero ever! Bea Arthur.

Spoiler warning! If you haven’t read the book or don’t want to know how the movie ends, turn back now!

The first American hardcover edition of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” spanned 652 pages. Even at over two hours and thirty minutes, the film version couldn’t stuff in every battle, breath and broomstick. Director David Yates had to make a number of tough calls, including losing an important fight in the Second Wizarding War and changing J.K. Rowling’s original ending, which recounted Dumbledore’s funeral.

“We had [the funeral] in the script at one point and it was a really strange experience,” he told MTV’s Josh Horowitz recently. “But after the courtyard scene and Dumbledore’s died, it felt like going to the funeral just felt like we were suffering from ending-itis. It felt like another end.”

Yates went on to note the difference between the experiences of reading a book and watching action unfold on the big screen. “In a book you can enjoy that journey but in the rhythm of a darkened cinema, it felt like the right place to end,” he explained.

Ultimately, though, Yates’ mission is to please both the franchise’s diehard fans and those without much exposure to “Potter” lore. “The fans gets frustrated with some of the decisions we take sometimes, but we’re trying to serve not just them obviously—because we adore them and we’re grateful for their support—we’re trying to serve an audience beyond the fan base who haven’t read some of the books,” he said.

Check out the video to hear Yates talk about why cutting out elements of the book is so tricky and about one “beautiful sequence” that never made it into the film.

So when MTV News caught up with Brüno on Tuesday during a MySpace-sponsored screening of his upcoming movie, we wanted to know what the Austrian fashion guru had to say about the infamous encounter with Em. Not surprisingly, he had some fightin' words left over after the May awards show.

“He’s a gun-slinging vigilante who seeks refuge from the basement of a church,” Tyrese said of the comics’ main character, who resembles the actor/singer/model in more ways than one. “He’s like a modern-day Robin Hood, who wants to take from the bad and give it back to the good and do whatever he can do to make life better in L.A.”
