I've got good news and bad news, video game fans. The good news is that a "Space Invader" film is on the way. The bad news is that it has no connection whatsoever to the classic arcade game.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Iron Man 2" screenwriter Justin Theroux is set to pen "Space Invader," Fox's astronaut romantic comedy that has nothing to do with shooting down wave after wave of aggressive alien aircrafts via joystick and button mashing. Instead, "Space Invader" focuses on a man who goes to space after suspecting that his astronaut girlfriend is cheating on him with a fellow astronaut.

Don't get me wrong, this "Space Invader" premise is pretty funny, and Will Arnett's attachment to the lead role makes it even funnier. Still, why throw away the "Space Invaders" name on a romantic comedy, rather than reserving it for a future video game adaptation? That's almost as bad as if the following five video games had their titles used for entirely different premises...

CONTRA: All it took was one week in Contra Costa County, California, to make Eddie (Jim Caviezel) and Anna (Julia Stiles) fall madly in love with one another. But Eddie is killed in a freak automobile accident, prompting Anna to return to the site of their first encounter for the funeral. What she finds there is the purest truth of all — that true love never dies and life goes on, all within the borders of Contra Costa.

FINAL FANTASY: Paul Applebee (Christopher Mintz-Plasses) is dying. With an estimated three weeks left to live, his older brother Tyler (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his rambunctious pal Stevie Three (Clark Duke) liberate Paul from the hospital to go on a cross country road trip to Las Vegas, where Bernie will be allowed the opportunity to satisfy his ultimate life goal — to participate in a medieval jousting tournament at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: Directed by Kevin Smith, this foul-mouthed romantic comedy focuses on womanizing business executive Langdon McRee (Jason Lee), who gets knocked down a peg or two when his firm is crippled by a terrible sex scandal. Now jobless, Langdon convinces his overbearing wife (Joey Lauren Adams) that he's still commuting to work — instead, he's visiting a New York stripper named Zelda (Liv Tyler), whose free-spirited attitude causes Langdon to reevaluate his own choices in life.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG: The only thing that Walter Buckley (Charles Grodin) ever wanted was some peace and quiet. Now without a family and in his 70s, Walter has finally earned the solitude he always longed for. But after his own brother dies of natural causes, Walter is left with all of his worldly possessions — including Sonic, an overactive hedgehog. Are Walter's curmudgeonly dreams of solitude forever dashed, or will he learn to love the spiky little animal and, perhaps more importantly, himself?

SUPER MARIO BROS.: A pair of brothers working as plumbers (Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo) are catapulted into a strange new world where man is descended from dinosaurs, all led by one particularly gnarly dictator named Bowser Koopa (Dennis Hopper). The plumbers work together to restore the kingdom's rightful ruler Daisy (Samantha Mathis) to power, all while dodging the bumbling reptilian foes that lurk in every corner.

Oh, wait, that was a real movie? Huh. Sounds kinda dumb.

Are you bummed that "Space Invader" isn't based on the video game of the (nearly) same name? What other game titles with contradictory premises can you think of? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter!

A couple weeks ago, Variety ran a story about what's next for Denis Leary, Jim Serpico and Apostle Films after the hit FX series "Rescue Me" wraps up in 2011. Tucked away at the end of the story was a brief bit about plans to produce a future-set one hour police procedural based on the Andrew Niccol-directed "Gattaca." Writer/producer Gil Grant, whose previous TV credits include "24" and "NCIS: Los Angeles," was named as the scribe, but that was where the news ended.

"Gattaca," released in 1997, didn't explode at the box office. It's attracted quite a following in its home video afterlife however, and deservedly so. You've got Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law starring in a futuristic thriller set in a world divided between Valids -- people who were genetically altered in utero to "reach their full potential" as humans -- and Invalids, or those born through natural means. Grant was kind enough to take some time last week to chat with us about the still-gestating project, and he revealed that his first move was to strip away the closed confines of the NASA-like organization that Hawke's character worked for in the movie.

"That facility was so specific, so narrow in its focus. It worked for [the movie's] story, but if you open it up and go outside that world, you can see a broader canvas there," Grant explained. The idea of a police procedural evolved naturally from there, both as a source of compelling weekly stories and as a portrait of the issues facing a society which has embraced eugenics.

"I came up with a world which is populated with Valids and Invalids, the same premise [as the movie], but taken into a police department where we’re… integrating, using the analogy of the ‘60s Civil Rights struggle," Grant explained. In the movie, those born through natural means filled the blue collar ranks while their genetically superior brothers and sisters enjoyed a wealth of opportunities.

"Even though it’s technically illegal to discriminate against Invalids, just like in the ‘60s people did," Grant continued. "So it’s come to pass that [the government has] ordered the police department to hire their first token Invalid into the detective department. What we’re doing is we’re taking an Invalid and teaming him up with a Valid, a seasoned officer. You know, it’s oil and water."

It's certainly a more compelling idea than simply having two Valid cops -- a la the movie's detectives, played by Alan Arkin and Loren Dean -- fighting crime in a eugenics-driven future. The idea of a sort of genetic civil rights movement was never broached in "Gattaca," but it's certainly a believable, even welcome, addendum to the fiction. Which isn't to say that Grant has had any guidance from Niccol.

"I don't know him," he stated simply. There's nothing but respect for the original work, but any chance of Niccol being involved, even in some consulting capacity, is out of Grant's hands. "That’s really up to [license-holder] Sony, I think. I’m certainly open to it, but that’s not my call."

The film is guidance enough, at least as far as painting the world of "Gattaca" is concerned. It is littered with Hawke monologues in which he creates a sense of the bigger picture by introducing terms and ideas which are specific to the world. It's there that Grant finds inspiration.

"I would use a great deal of the world and the nomenclature and the art direction, the feel of it, the music. It’s just such a beautiful film, and really cool," he said. "I think you do as much of that as you can do, but set it at a police department. Then you get all the crimes and all the tension that’s built up with Valids being accused of something they didn’t do, all the forensic science that would be new and much more advanced than we have new. I can see it easily moving into a police procedural."

For now, we'll just have to wait and see. There's no script yet and there won't be one until January or February, according to Grant. It's too early to say even if the series will follow the current trend in hour-longs, of tying everything together beneath an overarching narrative. That said, Grant does have a few ideas.

"My kneejerk reaction is that I think it’s more episodic, but... you carry some personal arcs along. The Invalid character I see as having a Valid girlfriend, and she’s dating him for all the wrong reasons. And I think that the Valid, the older detective, has some problems in his personal life that you follow through. Then you’ve got the captain of the police department who’s forced to hire this [Invalid]. Whether or not we have an over-reaching, bigger story arc, I’m not sure. I tend to think not," he said.

Similarly, don't expect to see any familiar faces, or characters. The plan as it stands now is to embrace Niccol's fiction without directly referencing it. "I think we do our own thing," Grant said. "It’s different all together. I think it would be in some ways truer to the film to just [set things in a] different corner of the world and not try to re-cast an existing character."

Are you a fan of Niccol's original movie? What do you think of the plans for a "Gattaca" TV series as Grant has laid them out?

We now know that Robert Zemeckis is playing it old school in at least one respect when it comes to his "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" sequel: the script will be penned by original scribes Jeffrey Price and Peter Seaman.

But with over two decades of moviemaking technology between the release of his first cartoon bunny film and the beginning of creative brainstorming for the second, the question is whether or not Zemeckis will also play it old school when it comes to the look of the film. Will it merge live-action with traditional animation? Or, building on his work on films like "A Christmas Carol" and "Beowulf," will the director introduce motion-capture and 3-D technology into the equation?

During a recent interview with MTV News' Josh Horowitz, Zemeckis made his clearest statement yet that he'll use mo-cap for the human actors and that the movie will be partly in 3-D.

"All the other characters that [the cartoons] would sort of have fun with would be magnificent in performance capture technology," he explained.

Inherent in this admission is the matter of 3-D technology. Starting with "The Polar Express" in 2004, all of Zemeckis' mo-cap movies have also been in three dimensions. So when the director talks about using performance-capture, he's also talking about making "Roger Rabbit" partly in 3-D. But he also ruled out using 3-D or mo-cap when it comes to the cartoons, including the title rabbit and his voluptuous beau, Jessica.

"I wouldn't use it for the cartoon characters, because I think they should stay two-dimensional because that's what — I wouldn't dimensonalize Roger," he said. "And I couldn't dimensonalize Jessica even if I wanted to because she doesn't have a nose. We wouldn't want to give her a nose."

Here's where it gets tricky. Even at its best, mo-cap technology creates characters that indisputably look animated. For the new movie, the prospect would be that for all the tech advances, the human actors would look less real than they did in the first film. Unless – and here we jump into pure speculation mode – that mo-cap look would be part of the storyline. Be still our cartoonishly beating hearts, could the film take place predominantly — or perhaps just the 3-D mo-cap portions — in Toontown?

Is there room in this world for a 3-D performance captured Eddie Valiant? Could this lure Bob Hoskins back to the role? What are your hopes for a "Roger Rabbit" sequel?

Last night, Charlize kissed a girl. A woman really, from the look of things. Hard to tell with their faces smashed together like that, isn't it? The kiss -- and the $140,000 that paid for it -- was part of a charity event supporting OneXOne, an organization committed to helping children in developing regions. You may remember OneXOne from the recent "Entourage" season finale, in which Matt Damon, as himself, hassled movie star Vinnie Chase (Adrian Grenier) to get involved.

Theron was initially on stage to auction off a trip to Africa, complete with a Nelson Mandela meet-and-greet, Us Magazine reports. The bidding topped out at $37,000, so the the actress sweetened the deal by offering up a 7-second kiss to a man for $130,000. One lucky lady upped that ante to 20 seconds for $140,000, and she took the prize. Hit the jump to get a look at the big picture.

Lots of arrows flying in this clip, an exclusive from John Woo's "Red Cliff." Maybe not as many as there were in the 2002 Jet Li flick "Hero," but I would argue that they're used to better effect here. In this action-packed scene, our heroes storm a fortification under fire from flaming arrows and catapult projectiles. If you enjoy epic-scale warfare, you will enjoy this clip.

The best place to really absorb the scale of something like "Red Cliff" is in theaters, which you can do starting November 18. For those who absolutely can't wait, you can also check out the movie via Video OnDemand services, Amazon and Xbox Live starting today, October 22. So get on it.

Early this morning, a rumor hit the Internets concerning Vin Diesel and one of his upcoming gigs. Citing a "trusted source," website CineFOOLS reported that "Vin Diesel has dropped out of 'xXx 3.'" No reason accompanied the news, though the writer speculated that it might have something to do with director Rob Cohen's departure from the franchise. Diesel of course launched the franchise in 2002, though the 2005 sequel centered on a new hero, played by Ice Cube.

Seeing as how the title of the film specifically references Diesel's character, his departure would likely spell some pretty significant changes for the coming sequel. Fortunately, it turns out that the rumor is untrue: Vin Diesel is still on board to star in "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage," which currently has a tentative 2011 release listed.

The word comes from Diesel's publicist, who checked out the rumor and confirmed it to be false. As he said in his e-mail to MTV News, "I made a few calls on this and I can tell you that it is completely not true." So there you have it.

Move along people. There's nothing to see here. Except "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage" starring Vin Diesel of course, but that's a couple years away.

Jessica Biel is gearing up to bring her A-game to "The A-Team." The actress said in a recent interview with MTV News that if fans are expecting it to be anything like the TV show, they are in for a surprise. The movie will be much more serious in tone than the classic 80's action series.

"I think it will be a little bit similar here and there but we really have our own tone going on," she said. "It’s a little bit less campy than the actual show and a little bit more serious action and fighting sequences but still with lots of humor. Lots and lots of humor."

The actress, who will star alongside Bradley Cooper, UFC champ Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, "District 9" star Sharlto Copley and Liam Neeson, would be open to seeing one of the original A-Teamers come back and get in on the action. But that's all still up in the air.

"I don’t know about [possible cameos] actually. Up to my knowledge at this point no," she said, adding that she'd like to see Mr. T play some kind of role. "That would be great. I can't imagine that people wouldn’t want to see him. When you think of A-Team you think of Mr. T, so that'd be great. I don’t know about it though."

Biel does know a thing or two about her character, Carissa Sosa (it's worth noting that IMDB lists her character's name as Amy Allen; perhaps IMDB has it wrong). "She works for the Department of Defense, so she's sort of after the A-Team throughout the whole movie," she said. "She had a previous relationship connection with one of the members of the A-Team, but not presently at the moment is their particular love interest."

Which original "A-Team" member would you most like to see in a cameo appearance? How might he/they fit into the story?

This week, fans get to celebrate almost a century of "The Wizard of Oz" with a 70th Anniversary DVD/Blu-ray release of the 1939 film. It's fitting then that we have some exclusive new information to share with you on the screen adaptation of Todd McFarlane's "The Twisted Land of Oz" toy line.

MTV Splash Page editor Rick Marshall spoke to the man himself recently, and he was more than happy to delve into the project's genesis, some basic story elements and what the future holds. There's new stuff in here, things you haven't heard yet. The short version: this ain't your granddaddy's "Wizard of Oz." "Spawn" creator McFarlane has some dark ideas kicking around in his head, and they mesh very well with the inherently creepy qualities of "Oz."

Just coming to the point we're at today has been quite a ride for McFarlane. The "Twisted" line of toys performed well enough that McFarlane received a call from "Hollywood" asking if there was a story to go along with the action figures. There wasn't one at that moment, though he had a pitch prepped in the space of a week. Warner Bros. bit and Michael Bay was attached... but only until "Transformers" stole him away. And we all know how that turned out.

More recently, "A History of Violence" writer Josh Olson stepped up to pen a script. McFarlane's chief concern is delivering an Oz that is darker than what people know. As he told execs during pitch meetings, "Number one: you have to turn off the switch to the [1939] MGM movie. If you don't turn off that switch, almost everything I'm about to say will not make sense to you."

See, what makes a man like Todd McFarlane so successful is an understanding of his audience. He's not out to bring "Oz" author L. Frank Baum's words and world to the silver screen; he simply wants to be inspired by it. "Basically," McFarlane reasoned, "what do I have to do to sell a 22 year old kid going to college [to come] see something called 'Oz'?"

"There's a lot of wink wink, nudge nudge stuff, so ['Twisted Land' isn't] completely devoid of what we've come to know," McFarlane said. It may not sound like it based on the story's setup, but the parallels are there.

"In mine, [Dorothy is] up in the Antarctic, and there's bad weather," McFarlane said. "The point is that when you're in bad weather in a s--tty place up north, it is completely gray. That would be our 'black & white [sequence].' Then she falls into her Shangri-La, called Oz, where suddenly everything's in color."

As anyone who knows the toy line is already aware, familiar characters aren't left out. They look a bit different, but all are present and accounted for. The biggest of the changes, in more ways than one, is to Dorothy's lovable dog.

"There's still a thing called Toto, except its the biggest thing in the movie and not the smallest thing. [The beast called Toto] basically ate the first dog, and it's this big thing that [the inhabitants of Oz] ride. They've given this generic word... so instead of horses, [people] ride Totos."

Unfortunately, Olson's script did not deliver in the way that McFarlane had hoped. "Josh came in [on the project] and I read the first draft. I told [Warner Bros.] I was curious about how we went from what I pitched to what I called 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.'"

"My understanding is that [the studio] thought we went a little too conservative, so somebody else is taking a crack at [the script] now. We're never going to get as crazy as I wanted, so I have to accept that. My pitch is fairly radical, if you will. If you're 22 years old, it's not radical. If you're an executive, it's radical."

For any changes being made to his original idea, McFarlane isn't terribly troubled. "I think there will be a compromise," he said. "I've told [the studio] that it's okay, I understand the business side." Which isn't to say that he's totally on board.

"I just found it odd that they bought that cool, creepy ['Twisted Land of Oz' pitch] and now they're taking a step back." Not a big one, mind you. Remember, the Olson treatment is still out.

"I think the first script was just a little soft for them," McFarlane explained. "I've always been a believer that the reason remakes don't work is that they stay too true to the source material. Hopefully we'll have a new script in the next month or two, and then we'll be a lot closer to seeing whether it will grab some true momentum or whether we're heading into development hell here."

Time will tell. I'm certainly hoping that momentum gears up on this project soon, as the land of Oz is ripe for the "darker" treatment that McFarlane's envisioned.
