-- "Mad Men" producer Matthew Weiner is turning his attention to film now that the latest season is finished. He's now getting set to helm "You Are Here," a romantic comedy that he wrote. Independent financing is already in place and the cast will include the likes of Jennifer Aniston and "The Hangover" stars Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis. No word on a synopsis, but he'd better get cracking or he's going to leave a lot of "Mad Men" fans very disappointed. (Variety)

-- Winona Ryder is in talks to join Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis in "Black Swan," the next effort from Darren Aronofsky. The synopsis makes it sound like a ballet-infused "Fight Club." Portman plays a dancer whose top rival (Kunis) may in fact be a figment of her imagination. Ryder would pirouette into the role of another dancer. (Variety)

-- We knew Peter Berg was directing a movie adaptation of the board game "Battleship." And now we know who the villains will be. Aliens! (Latino Review)

-- Strange, big news coming out of "The Wolf Man" camp. The Benicio Del Toro-starring creature feature remake was once set to feature the talents of composer Danny Elfman. This is no longer the case. The man behind such memorable themes as "The Simpsons" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is now off the picture -- hitting theaters on February 12 -- due to a "scheduling conflict." Taking his place is Paul Haslinger, who most famously did the score for "Underworld" and the recent "Death Race" remake. (Cinemusic, via Dread Central)

-- Guillermo del Toro revealed that he will appear in a cameo in "The Hobbit," which he is directing. That is all. (TheOneRing.net)

--On the flip side, studio heads at Sony are hoping that Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp are up for a "District 9" sequel, but the producer-director pair is allegedly holding off until they "figure out what the story is and organize their respective schedules." Sony's hopes are hardly surprising as "District 9" has officially crossed the $200 million threshold, a fantastic result based on the movie's $30 million budget. (Deadline Hollywood Daily)

--Could Sandy Collora's "Hunter Prey" be the next "District 9" or "Paranormal Activity"? You can judge for yourself by checking out production images from the independently produced science fiction film, but I'm certainly psyched to see this one as soon as possible. (io9)

--Sticking with science fiction but moving into family-friendly territory, remember that Robert Rodriguez-directed "Jetsons" film that was supposedly in the works? According to one source, Rodriguez might be out, with Peter Segal replacing him. (Pajiba)

--Speaking of family-friendly, it doesn't get much family-friendlier than the Berenstain Bears. A movie version is on the way with "Night at the Museum" director Shawn Levy at the helm. "It's warm-hearted comedy about family, and a different kind of family," he said of the film. (USA Today)

--Bears might beat "Battlestar Galactica," but they don't beat vampires. "Let Me In," the American remake of the Swedish vampire flick "Let the Right One In," has officially begun principal photography in New Mexico. Joining the previously cast Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chloe Moretz and Richard Jenkins are Elias Koteas, Cara Buono and Sasha Berrese. (Bloody Disgusting)

--Finally, some news that could be troubling or just arbitrary. Word on the street is that actor Naveen Andrews, best known as Sayid Jarrah on ABC's "Lost," has booked a guest starring role on "Law & Order: SVU." Given that "Lost" is only halfway into shooting its final season, could Andrews' new gig signal that his work as Sayid is already finished? If so, that doesn't herald good things for everybody's favorite "communications expert." (TV Guide)

--NBC is going from "Heroes" to "Zeroes" in an all-new television project from "Crank" duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Titled "Zeroes," the one-hour NBC project will focus on a crisis situation's final hour. "We want to drop right into it and sustain the absolute most berserk state of crisis, when all of the options have been exhausted," said Taylor. (THR)

--Speaking of massive crises, Fox's "24" is about to resurrect an old villain: none other than former President Charles Logan, who last appeared on the cusp of death in the show's sixth season. Despite his final bloody moments, executive producer Howard Gordon said that the opportunity to unite actors Gregory Itzin and Cherry Jones, who plays the current president, "was simply too compelling to pass up." --Morgan Freeman will tap into his geriatric-but-naughty side in an upcoming comedy titled "Dirty Old Men," which Peter Segal is potentially directing. The film focuses on "an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life," but Morgan's character — the playboy's best friend — does everything he can to interfere with the new couple's happiness. Should be a nice companion piece to "The Bucket List," no? (THR)

--Sookie Stackhouse and Batman's former main squeeze Rachel Dawes are set to team up in "The Romantics." Katie Holmes has signed on to replace actress Liv Tyler in the Anna Paquin-starring indie movie, which also features the talents of Josh Duhamel, Malin Akerman, Elijah Wood and Adam Brody. Holmes will have a producing credit in the film. (Variety)

--Fans of NBC's recently canceled cop drama "Southland" can breathe easier today knowing that the show is finding a new home over at TNT. The series, which stars Ben McKenzie, Michael Cudlitz and Regina King, should have the opportunity to embrace its grittier side on the new network. (Variety)

--If anybody could get me over the loss of Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, it's Jackie Earle Haley. The purported first review of the "A Nightmare On Elm Street" remake has popped up online, describing Haley's performance as "no nonsense, to the point, smarmy, ugly, repulsive and just plain vile... what you would expect from a child molester and it fits the story." --Writers, producers and all-around cool guys Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who pretty much have an equity stake in Hollywood at this point, have some things to say about their upcoming View-Master movie. Apparently the idea for the story was born before the classic 3-D viewing toy came into the picture as a peg for a movie, from the mind of "Fringe" writer Brad Kane. Orci then references back to story relayed to the duo by "Transformers" producer Steven Spielberg, whose original idea for "E.T." had nothing to do with aliens. (Sci Fi Wire)

--The first bit of info has emerged on director Lars Von Trier's follow-up to the genital-mutilating art-horror flick "Antichrist." Next up is "Planet Melancholia," which is described as a "psychological disaster film." In the words of Zentropa's Peter Jensen, it is "romantic, in a Lord Byron sort of way." --The first pic for Sam Raimi's newly established for-kids horror production company is "Burst 3D," which will be helmed by "Doomsday" director Neil Marshall. --Following a "blink and you'll miss it" leak, /Film has a description up of the first full trailer for "Toy Story 3," which movie-going audiences and Internet users will presumably be able to see for themselves very soon. --Accomplished filmmaker Paul Schrader (he wrote "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull"!) is coming back to Hollywood. Halfway at least. In a joint Hollywood/Bollywood production, Schrader will direct "Xtrme City," which follows a U.S. ranger and an Indian commando as they comb the Mumbai underworld for the Yank's kidnapped sister-in-law. --"24" co-executive producer Jon Cassar is all set to direct "Motorcade," which may star Ryan Reynolds. The story, from a screenplay by Billy Ray, involves a terrorist group who successfully kidnap the U.S. President while he's riding through New York City in a... wait for it... motorcade! Reynolds is in talks to star as the “disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time.” (Variety)

--Samuel L. Jackson has nailed down his next gig. One of them anyway, as the actor seems to have commits spanning the entirety of Hollywood. The latest news is that he'll star in an adaptation of "The Same Kind of Different as Me," a non-fiction bestseller about an ex-con (Jackson) who befriends an affluent Dallas art dealer. (Variety)

--Wu-Tang Clan leader RZA is set to star alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis in "Due Date," Todd Phillips follow-up to this past summer's hit comedy "The Hangover." No word on what role RZA will fill; the story follows two unlikely traveling companions, one of whom is heading home to witness the birth of his first child. (Variety)

--"Battlestar Galactica: The Plan," the second spin-off movie for the Ron Moore/David Eick-conceived SyFy TV series which ended earlier this year, will hit DVD and Blu-ray on October 27. Holy frak, that's good news. (Sci Fi Wire)

--It looks like a "Blair Witch Project" sequel, a proper one from creators Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, is closer than its ever been to happening. Said Eduardo to ShockTillYouDrop, "It’s the first time that Dan and I have really gelled on an idea for a follow-up." He said that news, one way or another, will likely emerge by the end of the year. --"Collateral" director Michael Mann has picked his next project to direct, a biopic about war photographer Robert Capa set during the Spanish Civil War. The story will follow Capa's short, fiery love affair with colleague Gerda Taro. (Variety)

--Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment are teaming up to produce "The Vatican Tapes," a thriller/horror written by Christopher Borrelli. The story is described as being "in the vein of 'The Exorcist' or 'Rosemary's Baby,'" but that's really all there is to say at this point. (The Hollywood Reporter)

-- John Woo is set to bring his Chinese action epic "Red Cliff" stateside on November 20, 2009, and there's a brand new trailer to prove it. I'm still wondering how he'll fit his trademark hero-with-two-pistols into the period piece, but I'm keeping an open mind. (Apple)

-- Remember that horrifying Discovery Channel special about Earth's future millions of years down the line, where humanity is gone and scary hybrid creatures have taken over? --An image of director Joe Carnahan's fully assembled "A-Team" hit the Internet today. Not only does the photo give a first glimpse of the foursome, it also proves beyond any doubt that our new A-Team consists of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (UFC fighter), Sharlto Copley ("District 9"), Bradley Cooper ("The Hangover") and Liam Neeson ("Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace"). --Jamie Foxx is set to join Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis in the Todd Phillips-directed comedy "Due Date." Foxx will play an old friend of Downey's character, and a former lover of Downey's wife (Michelle Monaghan), whom he secretly keeps in touch with. (The Hollywood Reporter)

--There's a first look at Steve Carell and Tina Fey in "Date Night." Both of them are looking pretty roughed up. That's a duo I'll pay money to laugh at. (USA Today)

-- Columbia Pictures has picked up the rights to Lucy Prebble's stage play "Enron," which chronicles the high-profile fall of the Texas energy concern. Prebble will adapt her script for film and Laura Ziskin will produce, though no additional cast or crew players have yet been revealed. (Variety)

-- Racehorse Secretariat wasn't the last to win the illustrious Triple Crown -- awarded for finishing first at the Belmont Stakes, the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby -- but he's probably the most well-known. Randall Wallace's Diane Lane-starring horse biopic, appropriately titled "Secretariat," today added three more actors to the cast: John Malkovich, Dylan Walsh and Scott Glenn. -- "Mrs. Doubtfire" co-screenwriter Randi Mayem Singer has been tapped to produce a script for "Gene," which is described as "a modern take on the classic genie story." "Charlotte's Web" and "Smurfs" producer Jordan Kerner will perform similar duties for this project, which Singer pitched and will develop a script for. Singer's been busy lately; she wrote the Dwayne Johnson-starring "Tooth Fairy" and is currently working on "Big Momma's House 3." (The Hollywood Reporter)

-- "Traffic" and "Syriana" director Stephen Gaghan will partner with Lionsgate for a still-untitled action/thriller, the studio announced today. The story follows a deep cover operative who loses everything and washes out to Brooklyn, where he makes a new beginning as a uniformed cop. It's a reasonable enough fresh start until the former agent comes across his former nemeses operating right in his new home territory of New York City. (via ComingSoon)

-- Summit Entertainment will team with the "Fast & Furious" director-producer team of Justin Lin and Neal Moritz for a... wait for it... remake of the sci-fi classic "Highlander." Apparently there doesn't necessarily have to be only one. "Iron Man" screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway are developing a script. Sounds more like a reboot than a straight remake to me, which may be for the best. (via ComingSoon)

-- Jerry Bruckheimer is preparing to blow up the small screen with loud noises, lots of gunplay and spectacular explosions. The mega-producer is bringing his talents to NBC for an untitled TV series which will tell "the stories of a team charged with making sure fugitive criminals don't evade justice." The last time Bruckheimer teamed with NBC was for the short-lived "E-Ring" in 2005. (The Hollywood Reporter)

-- Despite the fact that word emerged in late July that the "Resident Evil" series was getting a new trilogy, starting with 2010's "Resident Evil: Afterlife," it seems that plans have already changed. Now, "Afterlife" will bring about an end to the series as we know it, with Sony Screen Gems planning a full-on reboot in its aftermath, called "Resident Evil Begins." (Bloody-Disgusting)
