GooniesTwenty-five years have passed, and we're happy to know that love for some of the best films of 1985 has stayed strong during that time. I of course am talking about "Back to the Future" and "The Goonies," both of which have been celebrated a lot in the past week. But while "Back to the Future" received two sequels, it is a bit surprising that "The Goonies" didn't get even one. But according to intel Collider got at the press day for "The Goonies" 25th Anniversary DVD, apparently a "Goonies" sequel was closer than any of us realized.

"There have been times up until five years ago where they actually had a script with well-renowned writers working on a great, magnificent script and it just didn’t happen," said star Corey Feldman. "There’s a lot of politics involved but the bottom line, like what Jeff [Cohen] said jokingly, but this is in all essences a treasure trove for Warner Bros. It's their classic family film of all time. So I think we would all be supportive in seeing it happen if there was the right script, if [Richard] Donner was at the helm and [Steven] Spielberg got behind it. Yeah, I'd be there." Read More...

Play DeadThe concept of zombie movies is certainly nothing new, but the undead are biting, clawing and charming their way into Hollywood in a variety of innovative new ways nowadays. These aren't your parents zombies, be they slow or fast moving, or created by virus or curse. Nope, now they're falling in love, giving Jane Austen novels new meaning and even... playing football?

That's right. The latest of these modern zombie tales to get brought to the big screen is an adaptation of Ryan Brown's supernatural thriller "Play Dead," which follows vengeful zombie football players in a football-obsessed Texas town. Variety reports that Mark Canton, producer for George Romero's "Land of the Dead," is producing the flick and "300" screenwriter Joe Schreiber will be adapting it.

Never did we think we'd see a zombie football flick, but now that the idea is out there, we have to admit it sounds like a touchdown. And it got us thinking about what other surprising genres we'd like to see the zombies infect, and which ones it already has. Read More...

Tom CruiseIs Tom Cruise ready to lose that lovin' feeling again? Maybe, according to Deadline. The site reports that Cruise has been approached by New Line to have a supporting role in their big-screen adaptation of "Rock of Ages," which would include -- you guessed it -- lots of singing. How can we not love the idea when a young Cruise/Maverick once serenaded us with this?

"Rock of Ages" is Broadway's musical homage to '80s hair bands, and the character Cruise is being asked to play is a bartender who would get to join in with plenty of singing. Considering Cruise has expressed some interest in being in a musical in the past, and is an expert bartender thanks to another of his earlier films, "Cocktail," we don't see why he wouldn't say yes just to have a little fun with the project. And, adding to the list of movies that make him qualified for the gig, Cruise also proved he's still got some moves in 2008's "Tropic Thunder" (and at this year's MTV Movie Awards). Read More...

Has there ever been a more perfect match for a movie soundtrack than Daft Punk and "Tron: Legacy"? Certainly there are few collaborative efforts that have received as much fan excitement as this one. Daft Punk is going to be involved in a good portion of the "Tron: Legacy" promotional efforts as the days tick down until the film's December 17 release, and that explains why the latest trailer is really a music video for one of the 24 songs on the "Tron: Legacy" soundtrack, "Derezzed."

The only new scene in the trailer is a shot of the Daft Punk duo, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, in their cameo as disc jockeys at a nightclub within the digital world. And those costumes that they're wearing aren't even costumes, but just the typical outfits that Daft Punk wear during all their performances. So, has there ever been a soundtrack and film so perfectly matched for one another? Check out a handful of our recent favorites after the jump! Read More...

Peter JacksonThere's been so much hemming and hawing about "The Hobbit" production that we've almost lost track of which group is angry over what. But finally -- finally -- it seems like all the anger and wordplay is over with, as New Zealand Prime Minister John Key announced last night via a live press conference that an agreement has been reached between Warner Bros. and the New Zealand government... and "The Hobbit" will be staying in N.Z.

"I am delighted we have achieved this result," Key said. "Making the two Hobbit movies here will not only safeguard work for thousands of New Zealanders, but it will also follow the success of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy in once again promoting N.Z. on the world stage."

So let's recap: Peter Jackson is directing, Martin Freeman is starring as Bilbo Baggins, and the movies are being filmed in New Zealand. After seven years and a lot of doubts, everything actually finally came together! Read More...

Michael Jackson in ThrillerWill the greatest music video of all time make for one of the greatest movies of all time? We may soon find out. According to Deadline, "This Is It" and "High School Musical" director Kenny Ortega is looking to direct a film based on Michael Jackson's famous music video "Thriller."

Several studios including Fox 2000, Mandate/Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment are looking to pick up the project, which is being budgeted at around $50 million, but further negotiations are waiting on a deal to be completed with Jackson's estate.

The script will be written by "The Hangover"'s Jeremy Garelick (interesting choice), and is said to follow the basic folklore of the music video "involving Vincent Price and the town he grew up in." It's also unclear whether the film will be a musical, though Ortega's involvement would seem to suggest that this is indeed the case. Read More...

Darren AronofskyConsidering the wide range of topics director Darren Aronofsky has covered in the past -- from drug addiction to the quest for eternal life to a washed-up wrestler's last shot at redemption -- it does seem a little bizarre that he's been attached to direct three very similarly themed projects in a short period of time.

First there was the "Robocop" reboot, which has since fallen through, then he became mostly attached to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2," and now TheWrap reports that Aronofsky will develop and direct a flick named "Machine Man" that sounds similar in plot to "Iron Man."

The film, based on the upcoming Max Barry book of the same title, follows a "gadget geek and engineer at a forward-thinking tech firm" who becomes obsessed with improving himself and starts to replace his body with high-end titanium performance upgrades of his own design. The plot also teases that there is someone else (an enemy, perhaps?) who has similar ideas for their own body. Read More...

Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsHalloween is fast approaching, and unsurprisingly here at the MTV Movies Blog we have a soft spot for movie-themed costumes. There's tons of inspiration to be taken from films released in 2010, which means that the streets are probably going to be overrun with people dressed up in Mad Hatter and Na'vi costumes purchased from the store. But there's plenty of room to save your pennies and be creative without just throwing on a hoodie and calling yourself Mark Zuckerberg or pulling out your best suit and saying you're Don Draper or a member of the "Inception" dream team (pun intended).

We're getting rid of your excuse to be lazy this Halloween and bequeathing unto you some costume ideas that will make your friends cringe -- whether it's out of good old-fashioned horror or due to the sheer magnitude of your costume's disregard for good taste (we apologize in advance if we inadvertently offend anyone). So hit the jump for five original twists on movie-themed costumes to spice up your Halloween. Read More...

Tom HardyIs there any young actor more in demand than Tom Hardy right now? Maybe, but it sure doesn't feel like it. He got the lead role in "Mad Max: Fury Road" before he became the surprise star of "Inception," and now that that project has been delayed, he's had plenty of free time to start piling on the roles. And boy he has.

His latest potential starring vehicle is the hot new action-adventure flick "Snow White and the Huntsman," with Hardy circling to play the Huntsman while Angelina Jolie is being eyed for the role of the evil queen Ravenna. The Playlist got the scoop that Hardy is looking to fit filming of this in early next year after he wraps McG's "This Means War" and before he starts on "Batman 3," in which he's expected to play a villain. Ang LeeIt's been a year since Ang Lee first announced that he would be adapting the bestselling novel "Life of Pi" as his next big-screen project, and now there's finally some forward movement to report. Lee has cast 17-year-old Suraj Sharma to play the film's lead Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, and the Oscar-winning director has also revealed that the movie will be filmed in 3-D.

Sharma was one of 3,000 teenage boys who auditioned for the role of Pi, and his lack of acting experience (he's acted just once, in a school play) did not detract from his amazing audition. "He read one complex scene, and by the end he was crying," Lee told USA Today. "We all were." Read More...
