FROM MTV.COM: When "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" was announced for a summer 2011 release, fans went wild. Then the project hit rough waters following the departure of studio chief Dick Cook, a big supporter of "Pirates" star Johnny Depp. The Jack Sparrow actor subsequently expressed hesitation about continuing with the series.
Still, the project sails forward. Depp's not a lock until he signs off on the script, which he hasn't yet seen, but Captain Barbossa actor Geoffrey Rush told MTV in late September that he's been told to keep his schedule open for cameras to roll next spring.
As so many of the other posts here on MTV Movies Blog today already did today, I'm first going to remind you that "New Moon" is now in theaters. See, it's kind of a big deal. And as you might imagine, we have vampires on the brain as a result.
Now even the most rabid Twilighter will tell you that Stephenie Meyer's series isn't for everyone. The phenomenon has definitely grown beyond the core audience of teenage girls, but there are still those who prefer to see their blood-suckers swimming in entrails and terrorizing and unknowing public. Well we've got you covered. Really it's Hollywood that has you covered; I'm just here to give you an update. In the coming year and beyond, there are quite a number of vampire movies coming out, catering to a variety of audiences. Two more "Twilight" movies sure, but what else? Hit the jump to read about a few of our highlights. Read more...
Damn this news. I can't refer to the "two Stevens" because Steven Spielberg and Stephen King spell their first name differently. Maybe the "two Steves"? That's a little too familiar. None of that really matters in the end: the news is that these two giants -- one the father of the Hollywood blockbuster, the other a master of literary horror -- are joining forces in a super team-up of almost unmanageable proportions.
Spielberg and King will partner to produce a "limited series" for DreamWorks TV, adapted from the author's just-released "Under the Dome," Variety reports. This isn't their first partnership, however. Spielberg has held the rights to King's 1984 book "The Talisman" for more than 20 years; here's hoping "Under the Dome" gets off the ground more quickly. Friends... I've got mixed emotions about this news. On the one hand, the "Vacation" movies are comedy gold. So any chance to see Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo take up their roles as the Griswold family again has me pounding the walls in excitement. On the other hand, this latest reunion is for a HomeAway ad campaign which is set to launch during the Super Bowl on February 7, 2010. Sooooo... yeah, conflicted.
This isn't the first time that Chase and D'Angelo have stepped into their Griswold roles in recent memory. They made a brief cameo in "Family Guy: Blue Harvest," the animated series' loving parody of "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope," complete in a flying version of the first "Vacation" movie's Wagon Queen Family Truckster (the big green station wagon thing). A replica of the Truckster will also appear as part of the HomeAway ad campaign, according to a report from US Weekly. But perhaps there's some hope to take away from all of this. Read more...
As tragic as the circumstances are, I've been enjoying the flood of candid Jackson photos we've been seeing in the past months. In life, he was notoriously withdrawn from the public eye. It's easy to refer to him now as a "legend" because he was so untouchable and set apart even when he was still with us. So candid photos like the one from earlier this week and the one seen after the break give us a better picture of who Jackson was as a person. He gets pretty silly in today's pic too, wearing a giant afro wig that harkens back to his younger performance days with the Jackson 5. Read more...
"New Moon" hits theaters today, but I'm betting that at least a good portion of you saw it last night in a midnight screening. I'll be seeing it this weekend -- tomorrow morning, in fact -- but I figured it would be best to leave the late night viewing to the real fans. Besides, something told me that late-night "New Moon" revelers were going to be a loud crowd to see the movie with. Lord knows I gasped and hooted during "The Phantom Menace." I figure a morning matinee will be a bit... quieter. Only a bit.
But I'm not here to talk about "New Moon." That's out in theaters now. It's old news. "Eclipse" is the new hotness. In six months we get to board this train again when the third movie in the "Twilight" series hits theaters. And now that the "New Moon" has risen, we've gotten our first taste of "Eclipse" in the form of a teaser poster, available exclusively through the "Twilight" Tracker app for iPhone and iPod Touch. FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: Would you be surprised to hear we have one more Robert Pattinson trailer to show you before tomorrow's big "New Moon" premiere? Probably not, right? But what if we told you it had nothing to do with sparkling vampires? In a feat of epic timing, Summit has released the trailer for Rob's other 2010 film "Remember Me" right in time to coincide with the hoopla surrounding the sequel's release. And in typical RPattz style, the comely actor is all brooding melancholy in this first sneak peek.
The film centers around a pair of star-crossed lovers (sound familiar?) dealing with their own family tragedies. The trailer opens on Tyler (Rob) trying to break up a street fight, ultimately leading to his arrest and a bloodied face (which explains all those paparazzi shots of a worse-for-the-wear Rob strolling through New York City). When Tyler's father Charles, played by Pierce Brosnan, comes to bail him out, it's clear there's no love lost between father and son. "You could do worse than a father who bails you out of jail," Charles says. "I don't want to be bailed out of anything," Tyler shoots back.
The game-to-film adaptation train rolls on. Lots of passengers this week too. Yesterday, HBO's "Rome" star Kevin McKidd said that discussions are underway for a "Call of Duty" movie, unsurprising given the massive success of the just-released "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2."
"New Moon" hits theaters on Friday, to the delight of Twilighters everywhere. The director, Chris Weitz, is a favorite of fans and cast members to helm the (technically still unconfirmed) fourth installment in the series, "Breaking Dawn."
Unfortunately, the enthusiasm may not matter much anymore. Weitz, who is previously known for his work on another fantasy adaptation, "The Golden Compass," as well as the Oscar-nominated "About a Boy," is thinking about folding up his director's chair and putting away his pen. Whether or not "New Moon" is a critical success, offers will surely follow in the wake of its release. From the sound of things however, Weitz already has his next project mapped out. After that... the show might be over. Read more...
It's common knowledge that video games have had a rough go of things in Hollywood. It's still a young entertainment medium -- comparing them chronologically to film, games have really only reached their "talkie" phase -- but a story is a story, and games really just haven't been adapted very well. That hasn't stopped filmmakers from trying to crack the code though.
There was some promise in "Halo," which Peter Jackson was going to produce and "District 9" helmer Neill Blomkamp was going to direct. Until it fizzled out, that is. The next great hope on the horizon is "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," which hits theaters next May. Both of these games have rich, well-developed stories. "Twilight" producer Wyck Godfrey, who has his hands on adaptations of "Gears of War" and "Dead Space," argues that the big problem with game adaptations thus far is related mostly to the source narratives.
