Today, Roland Emmerich's latest world-ending epic, "2012," hits theaters. John Cusack, Amanda Peet and their pals race around the world, beholding one scene of devastation after another as an eco-catastrophe tears the planet apart. The story's premise is built on the belief that the apocalypse will come in the year 2012, as foretold by the Mayan calendar.
Unfortunately for Mr. Emmerich, Hollywood has already trashed the lovely planet Earth roughly a bazillion times over. From viral outbreaks to zombie uprisings, global warming to alien incursions... the people of this world have seen, suffered through and been almost completely annihilated by any threat you can imagine. Well, that was fast. Barely a week since they were first rumored to be a part of the new "Mad Max" sequel, the news is official — Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy are joining the cast of the George Miller-directed film.
According to separate reports in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, both actors have signed onto "Mad Max: Fury Road," the fourth installment in the action-packed franchise. Read more...

'Tis the season for scary movies, so it's fitting that Thomas Jane's stylish, noir-fueled horror film "Dark Country" arrives on shelves this week. In his directorial debut, the "Punisher" actor not only makes his first bow behind the camera, but he also stars alongside Lauren German ("Hostel: Part II") and Ron Perlman ("Hellboy")—two actors not entirely unfamiliar with fright-friendly cinema.
Combining surreal, David Lynch-style visuals with a pulpy horror tale that would seem at home in old issues of "Tales From The Crypt" or "Creepy," Jane says comic books weren't far from his mind when he stepped behind the camera.
"I’ve been reading comic books since I was eight years old, and in comics, anything’s possible," Jane told MTV News. "They come up with angles that you could never shoot in life, and they really have to work hard to make that two-dimensional space feel three-dimensional, so it’s a fantastic resource for coming up with ideas for shots." From "Anchorman" to "Land of the Lost," Will Ferrell has braved many a genre before, typically operating somewhere within the general realm of comedy. His next movie, "The Other Guys," is no different -- alongside co-star Mark Wahlberg and frequent collaborating director Adam McKay, Ferrell is set to explore the cinematic world of crime.
Luckily, Wahlberg and Ferrell aren't alone. Variety reports that the actors will be joined in the film by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson and Steve Coogan, all of whom have their own diversity of genre performances. Read more...

This is purely a premature news bite. In a recent interview with his hometown newspaper, The Modesto Bee, "The Hurt Locker" star Jeremy Renner mentioned that he’s “fighting” to get a role in a new “Mad Max” movie. Renner says that he’s screen testing and taking a meeting with director George Miller for the gig, though he shares no specifics on what character he’s up for.
Given his rising status in Hollywood, it’s likely that Renner is looking to nab the lead in the fourth installment of the “Max” franchise, which reportedly will not feature original star Mel Gibson. Still, it’s not even completely known what the next installment of the series will be like. What a strange and winding road films take! When I first reported on "The Beaver" it was a blurb on Steve Carell's pre-production slate. The story of a depressed man and his beaver puppet seemed like a natural fit for the actor, who often veers into tragi-comedy in his movie and television roles.
The plot thickened when Jim Carrey expressed interest. In addition, rumors put Jodie Foster behind the camera. We've now reached "stranger in a strange land" territory, as Mel Gibson appears to be stepping into the leading role. Read more...
Disney's "Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" has been in silent running mode for awhile now. We first heard that "Terminator Salvation" director McG would be taking the helm of a fast-tracked origin story of Jules Verne's famed submarine captain back in January. In an interview with MTV a few months later, the director revealed his plans to carry the 139 year old story "into today's culture."
Today, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the script penned by Bill Marsilii ("Deja Vu") and Justin Marks ("Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li") is getting a rewrite from Randall Wallace. Wallace scripted Mel Gibson's "Braveheart," Michael Bay's "Pearl Harbor" and -- oddly -- the popular PC role-playing game "Titan Quest." Read more...
Even us film geeks at MTV Movies Blog must admit that there are times when we experience cognitive dissonance between our favorite actors and the characters they portray. Sometimes, an actor capable of delivering a beautiful performance can come off as something very different when thrust in the public eye. In other words, even the most talented performers can suffer from some severe image problems.
