Two days ago, Deadline reported that "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" director Jon M. Chu is in talks to helm a live-action "Masters of the Universe" movie. Since Chu seems to have the whole nostalgia-heavy movie down, this news got us excited and thinking who could be the new He-Man.
As a service, we've helped narrow down the field.
Granted the guy hasn't had a lot of success wearing a loin cloth lately, Kitsch knows how to rock the longer hair and can act while having abs. After such a rocky supposed-breakout summer, he deserves another shot at carrying a tent pole film that's as fun as he can be. As an added bonus, Kitsch's former "Friday Night Lights" co-star Zach Gilford can star as Prince Adam. Tim Riggins and Matt Saracen should always come as a package deal. Grayskull forever!
Speaking of actors that deserve a shot at a big budget film, the former "Lost" bad-boy-but-not-really-a-bad-boy brings an on-screen persona to the table that begs for more exposure. Holloway appeared briefly in Brad Bird's "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," but the exited the movie way before we were done with him. Give this guy a chance, and your He-Man will actually have some depth.
In all likelihood, if Jon M. Chu ends up directing "Masters of the Universe," this will be your He-Man. I mean, it's hard to make an argument for anybody else. Johnson's physique is pretty much unmatched by any working actor, plus after "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," he already has a working relationship with Chu. It's not that we're opposed. It's just a little obvious.
If it comes down to acting chops, Tom Hardy and his muscles don't have any competition. Did you see how enormous he was in "The Dark Knight Rises"? He can definitely swing that broad sword with ease, and, like the other candidates on this list, he could bring some character to an otherwise bland role. Our only reservation is that Hardy lacks He-Man's flowing locks. But given the opportunity to see Hardy in a "Masters of the Universe" movie, we could look past the hair.
Because how do you improve upon this?
