Expendables 2

Continuing the trend of this week being the most amazing week in the history of weeks for trailers (an exaggeration, sure, but let's go with it), the very first "Expendables 2" teaser trailer hit last night, and it's bound to make action junkies weak at the knees.

Yes, the "Ex2" trailer is light on Schwarzenegger. But whoa, when Arnie makes his appearance firing a machine gun off at who-knows-what, it's enough to guarantee that the Trench we're meeting here is much happier to flex his badass muscles than the guy we saw in the first "Expendables." Plus, what the trailer lacks in Schwarz it more than makes up for in Bruce Willis. The erstwhile John McClane is increasingly looking like the villain of the piece against a Sly and Arnie team-up, and that's just too fantastic for a die-hard action fan (see what I did there?) to ignore.

I kept fearing "50/50" would take a left turn onto Sappy Boulevard, plod past Preachy Junction and come to a rest in a town populated by "Dying Young," "Autumn in New York" and "Sweet November," where everyone learns pat lessons and becomes better people (except for those who die; those unfortunate folks just help us learn something about ourselves before they pass into the Great Cheesy Beyond).

"50/50" is a movie about cancer, after all, about a young man with the disease. At a certain point star Seth Rogen would have to cease being Seth Rogen, and the whole film would become some YA version of "Beaches," right?

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Based on writer Will Reiser's own experiences and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a young radio producer suffering from a rare form of cancer, "50/50" pulls off the magic trick of staying consistently funny, sweet, affecting and real — and never, ever cheesy. For all these reasons and more, "50/50" lands at #8 on MTV's list of the best movies of 2011.

We're just under a week away from the premiere of David Fincher's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," one of the most anticipated movies of the holiday season. There has been so much talk about every aspect of the upcoming film, but none has received as much attention as Rooney Mara, the woman bringing the film's heroine to life.

This new TV spot focuses on Mara as Lisbeth Salander, the disturbed genius research assistant Daniel Craig's Mikael Blomkvist brings in to help find a killer inside an influential family in a remote part of Sweden.

Chris Pratt

Andy Dwyer fans, looks like we're fairly close to seeing an actual Burt Macklin movie. Or, at the very least, "Parks & Recreation" star Chris Pratt is about to soldier up for a new dramatic role. Plus, George Clooney is stepping on stage for a one-night-only performance, Denzel Washington is equalizing things out as always, and "Hanna" star Saoirse Ronan is going to tell you how she lives now.

It's been a little while since we've heard from Sacha Baron Cohen on the solo comedy front. Back in 2006, every annoying person you know dressed up as Borat for Halloween, but increasing familiarity with his mockumentary tactics made it more and more difficult for Cohen to film without being noticed.

Cue "The Dictator," a classically Cohen character who isn't making his debut mockumentary style. The trailer for the film, which just arrived via Moviefone, reveals a very conventionally shot take on a very goofy character -- half the typical formula, updated for modern times.

There are many reasons to love and appreciate composer Hans Zimmer and not just for film score nerds like us. The most recent being the fact that while doing research for music to incorporate into the "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" score, he was exposed to the human rights abuses and infringements being inflicted upon the Roma people, a minority population (also known as gypsies) in Central and Eastern Europe.

For those who know anything about "Game of Shadows," you might recall that new addition Noomi Rapace's character is described as a gypsy. Zimmer recently told MTV News that he wanted the music for Rapace's character and a few other assorted scenes to be authentic so in an effort to understand the culture of the Roma people better he pitched a "road trip" to director Guy Ritchie and brought along his daughter Zoe Zimmer who is a fashion photographer. Their experience led to a moving collection of photos taken by Zoe and put on display in a "Deserve Dignity" photo exhibit celebrating International Human Rights Day.

MTV News caught up with Zimmer recently to get his take on the experience and bringing attention to a group of people who are being denied equal rights as citizens.

Hobbit

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" sets forth on its quest in December of next year, bringing moviegoers their first dose of Middle-Earth big-screen goodness in almost a decade. It's just the first silo of a two-part "Lord of the Rings" prequel, too, so we'll have even more to look forward to when "There and Back Again" hits in December 2013.

We've long known that "The Hobbit" would be split into two movies, but the breaking point between the two films has remained unclear. How much of J.R.R. Tolkien's story would make it into the first "Hobbit" movie? What are we in store for?

Thanks to a plot synopsis unearthed by Bleeding Cool, we've got our answer. Keep reading for the official "Unexpected" plot details.

Rock of Ages

Get a load of that "Rock Of Ages" trailer, will ya. Holy power ballads, big hair, leather pants and bad decisions. There's Julianne Hough being Julianne Hough, Russell Brand being Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin being Alec Baldwin in that he's scene-stealing up a storm, Catherine Zeta Jones likely killing it as a very uptight mom/PTA president type and Tom Cruise. A long-haired, shirtless, sort-of singing Tom Cruise.

MTV News was lucky enough to snag a few moments of director Adam Shankman's time to chat about the trailer, what he plans to tease out over the next six months and why Cruise was a kid in a candy store on set.

I confess I'm not the biggest fan of "The Descendants." But clearly I'm in the minority.

For one, the film is a near lock to nab Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (George Clooney) and Best Director (Alexander Payne), and could walk away with wins for all three if Academy voters sour on "The Artist." Two, I don't think I've heard crying like that in a theater since "Schindler's List," or perhaps "Jack and Jill." And three, "Descendants" landed in the #9 spot in MTV's list of the best movies of 2011.

My knock against the movie is squarely with Clooney's Matt King, an egocentric, workaholic, absentee father who suddenly discovers he loves his after she suffers a catastrophic brain injury and is going to die. To me, that's not genuine — it's self-delusional and just loathsome. It'd be one thing if the movie made a point of exploring King's egotism. Instead, he's held up as a hero, a blameless good guy, even as continues to put his needs ahead — indeed, in place — of those of his loved ones. Imagine if this movie were told from the wife's perspective, and it's this tragedy where she's in a loveless marriage with a guy who's a total d--k, and suddenly she falls in love with another guy and starts dreaming of another life for herself but ends up falling into coma. Exact same story, and King's the villain. In Payne's telling, I never really buy King's grief. It feels forced, inauthentic.
