Josh Holloway

Producer J.J. Abrams has established a great tradition within the "Mission: Impossible" franchise: in the last two "M:I" installments, Abrams has called in fan-favorite actors from his television past for brief but awesome roles. First Keri Russell popped into "Mission: Impossible III" in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it death scene, and today's newest movie — "Ghost Protocol" — introduces "Lost" veteran Josh Holloway to the franchise. Exactly what purpose the former James "Sawyer" Ford plays in the new "Mission" remains to be seen, but no matter how big or small his role, we're psyched to have him on board.

With Holloway following Russell's lead, we started wondering which other Abrams vets we'd like to see in future "Mission: Impossible" movies. Our wish list is past the jump!

I'd say 2011 was the year of the superhero if 2012 wasn't also set to gift us with a staggering array of caped and non-caped crusaders. Let's just say the last 12 months have delivered the world, to varying degrees of success, "The Green Hornet," "Green Lantern," "Captain America: The First Avenger," and "Thor."

The best of the bunch, however, is without a doubt "X-Men: First Class." What separates the mutants from their comic-book brethren is not story or visual effects or dope fight sequences — though "X-Men" has all of those things in spades — but something much rarer in this genre: characters you actually care about.

And so we honor "X-Men: First Class" as our #6 pick in MTV's best movies of 2011 list. Listen, I enjoyed "Thor" but never for a second did I buy the love story between the God of Thunder and Natalie Portman's earthy scientist. Though "Green Hornet" was a hoot, I never felt invested in Seth Rogen's bad-boy-gone-good arc. "X-Men," by contrast, gave us a level of character development you simply don't see often in superhero flicks, regardless of the year.

For every list of movie award nominations, there will probably be an almost equally long list of snubs. Unsurprisingly, this year's Golden Globe nominations missed some of the year's best work, but some of the snubs were just too big to ignore.

To right some of the wrongs, we picked our five most unforgivable oversights from the Golden Globe nominations.

We know you probably have a lot of questions you'd like to ask "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" star Tom Cruise. MTV News' Josh Horowitz has some too. He wanted the answers so badly that he traveled all the way to Dubai to put his questions to the man himself.

In the latest edition of After Hours, all rules are off, and Cruise is answering the tough questions, like "What did Val Kilmer smell like" on the "Top Gun" set? Nothing is off limits in this intense battle of the wills. Will Josh make it out alive? What items of clothing does Katie Holmes insist Tom wear? Find out all these answers and more in the new After Hours!

The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning, and for all the talk of outrageous snubs "Bridesmaids" scene-stealer Melissa McCarthy gets no love? David Fincher is denied for his work on "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"? — there's one omission that's not getting much attention: "The Muppets" was completely shut out.

"My Week with Marilyn" gets a Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical nod, but not Kermit and his felt-covered pals? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association can't find a single slot in Best Original Song for any of Jason Segel's infectious tunes? I think the HFPA needs to look itself in the mirror and ask, "Am I a muppet or a man?"

At least MTV has decided to honor "The Muppets," which lands in the #7 spot on our best movies of 2011 list, joining "50/50" (#8), "The Descendants" (#9) and "Attack the Block" (#10). The full list — including MTV's pick for the best movie of the year — will be announced during a live stream at 4:30 p.m. ET on Friday (December 16).

We've been having fun trying to dissect everything that's been teased or featured in the "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" promotional campaign, without getting too detailed or spoilery of course. From the look of things, it's clear that there is a lot going on with new characters and supervillains and such. Director Guy Ritchie told us that this movie is like the first one but on steroids, for example, and while one of those obviously amped up elements are the action sequences, there also seems to be a lot of Holmes dressing up and down in a variety of disguises.

When MTV News caught up with Robert Downey Jr. recently we asked him what he enjoyed most about all the costume changes and the pros and cons of men dressing in drag.

Prometheus

The first two "Alien" movies are sci-fi classics, so it's not surprising that we all wanted Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" to be related in some way. Indeed, it is -- there are "strands of DNA" floating around in the film that'll come out next summer, but not much else.

That seems okay; based on the first official poster, there will be enough mysterious sci-fi goings on without accounting for the dense "Alien" world. Check out that poster (as well as a new "John Carter" poster) after the jump!

Now that we're in the aftermath of the Golden Globe nominations and people everywhere are focusing on the snubs and robberies, it's an important time to reflect on the choices we are absolutely in love with.

American Horror Story

It's always great to see genre titles make it to the awards shows, which is why we're excited that Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's "American Horror Story" has been nominated for a Golden Globe in the Drama Series category. The Harmon family and their supernatural roommates are up against several other newcomers including the much-loved "Game of Thrones." Congrats also go out to the sharp-tongued Jessica Lange's Constance Langdon, who is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Does the horror series stand a chance this season? Ponder that, and read up on the rest of this week's horror news past the break.
