Believe it or not, it’s once again time to gear up for that contentious season when the Academy picks its best movies of 2011. And as “for your consideration” campaigns are launched, we figured we’d throw our hats into the ring in hopes of adding one critical category to the famed ceremony. There’s a group of hard-working unsung heroes that has yet to be recognized by the Oscars – they act in multiple languages, do their own stunts, play well with special effects teams and require minimal on-set pampering. Also: they’re adorable.

Ladies and gentleman of the Academy, for your consideration: Best Supporting Canine!

But, wait – hear us out! It was an incredible year for dogs in cinema – here, we plead the case with our ten favorite four-legged thespians of 2011 (in order of preference).

"Prometheus" isn't an "Alien" prequel, you say? Sure fooled me — because the just released trailer for director Ridley Scott's long awaited return to the science fiction arena looks exactly like a continuation of his 1979 horror masterpiece, in the very best of ways.

The trailer, which hit the web today, is a teaser in the truest sense… which, admittedly, is a little bit frustrating considering the three back-to-back trailer teasers that were previously released this week; their combined runtime extends longer than the full "Prometheus" teaser itself!

A lot goes into making a World War II epic like "Red Tails." You can just ask one of its stars Tristan Wilds. In this exclusive look behind the scenes, Wilds guides us through the making of George Lucas' pet project.

For over twenty year, Lucas attempted to bring the amazing story of the courageous Tuskegee Airmen to the big screen. Having finally succeeded in moving ahead with the project as producer, all there was left to do was film the thing.

It's been 10 years since the first "Lord of the Rings" film first hit theaters, and in that decade the movie series has become one of the most treasured accomplishments to ever grace the big screen. The franchise went on to win a total of 17 Oscars, including Best Director for Peter Jackson and Best Picture for "Return of the King," and has also grossed more than $1 billion domestically. Needless to say, it's a series that a lot of people care about.

Watch the "Hobbit" trailer!

That's why it was so heart-warming to see the trailer for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" grace our computer screens for the first time this week. We already listed off the five best reveals in the trailer, but what really got to us was how nostalgic it made us feel. Jackson knows how much this audience has missed their time spent in Middle Earth and the studio is playing it up as much as they can. Appropriately, we as fans are loving every second of it.

After the jump, we list off our five most nostalgic moments in the trailer.

In addition to being one of the most anticipated films of the season, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" is also marketing itself somewhat subversively: as the "feel bad movie" of the year, something sure to put a damper on your Christmas morning. With a plot heavy on rape and murder, it's definitely not fun for the whole family.

But "Tattoo" wouldn't be the first inappropriate holiday movie, not by a long shot. For families really upset about the way their annual Yankee Swap turned out, there's a long history of violent and messed up films being released on Christmas weekend. Below, our top five picks for the worst way to spend a Christmas afternoon.

Ghostbusters

Another day, another "Ghostbusters 3" rumor — and this one comes from gossip mag The National Enquirer of all places!

The scandalmongers are reporting that after star Bill Murray was sent the latest screenplay of the project, he mailed fellow ghostbusters Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis a nasty present: a box with the script totally shredded inside like confetti. The note attached read, "No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts!" The Enquirer reports that Dan and Harold were so upset by his response, that they plan on making the movie without him. Dread Central has more on the report.

Sound like a lot of nonsense to you too? Let us know below, and keep on reading for more of the week's Horror Bites.

David Fincher is a busy, busy man. In comparison to his Hollywood contemporaries, it seems like the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" director is always working on a new project, whether it's live action or animated. "Dragon Tattoo" comes out today, and the prospect of directing two sequels should keep his scheduled tied up for now.

But when Fincher talked to MTV News, he was more than happy to dish on the progress of some other projects. You might not know, but he's in the process of developing a Disney-sponsored version of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," the famous Jules Verne novel. Though the book wasn't important for Fincher while growing up, he was fascinated by the concept.

"The idea of a post-Civil War version of science fiction and the notion of being able to breathe underwater was so radical in its thinking. That's pretty cool," he said. "If you're going to do big tent-pole teenage PG-13 summer movies, it's kind of cool that it would be this."

Fast Five

Plenty of movies are split into two in order to give the story more room to breathe. "The Hobbit." "Twilight: Breaking Dawn." "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows." Why can't the "Fast and Furious" franchise join all the fun?

Vin Diesel, star of the franchise and one of its producers, announced that upon planning the sixth "Fast and Furious" film, the team realized that they would prefer a seventh movie to wrap up every storyline.

"With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn’t have enough space," he told The Hollywood Reporter. The sixth and seventh movies will be written simultaneously, though he gave no details on a possible production schedule.
