Rise of the Planet of the Apes

When "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" surprised with $453 million world-wide, the talk of Hollywood didn't center on the on-camera leads James Franco and Freida Pinto, but the man behind Caesar the ape, Andy Serkis.

Good news, then, that the mo-cap wizard responsible for the life-like ape and the iconic Gollum from "The Lord of the Rings" just signed for more "Apes" movies in a deal that Deadline Hollywood is reporting is for more than seven figures.

Cop Land

Director James Mangold might be known more today for his big-budget fare like "Knight and Day" and his next film, "The Wolverine" with Hugh Jackman, but in 1997, he was just a few years out of film school and putting together his second feature film "Cop Land." The modern day western touted an impressive cast of Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Sylvester Stallone, who packed 40 pounds to play the half-deaf Sheriff Freddy Heflin.

A new Blu-ray edition of "Cop Land" arrived in stores just this week, and Mangold spoke with MTV News to look back on his second film more than a decade later.

Hagrid

When J.K. Rowling first started writing "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," she had a very different perception of who would survive until the end of the book.

She already admitted that she flirted with the idea of killing off Ron Weasley, but apparently he wasn't the only one she almost hit with the killing curse. If Rowling hadn't had such a clear mental image of Hagrid carrying Harry Potter's body out of the Forbidden Forest at the end of "Deathly Hallows," he likely would have been gone long ago.

"Underworld: Awakening" is not your older sibling's "Underworld" movie. Times have changed a lot in the years that have passed since "Underworld: Evolution," and now leading lady Selene (Kate Beckinsale) -- and the audience -- will have to catch up with the times.

The first big change: humans now hunt the vampires and lycans, instead of vice versa. Also, according to a voice over in the new trailer for the movie, there's been an epidemic (likely humans being transformed into vamps and werewolves) that has swept the nation. Scientists have found "the one" that will lead to a cure from said infestation.

Except, maybe not. As Selene warns in the trailer: "Everything they've told you is a lie."

Project X

After "Paranormal Activity 3" scared up a big opening weekend, it was clear that the found footage genre isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The latest addition to the club is "Project X" from producer Todd Phillips, the director of "Old School" and "The Hangover."

This time, the camera doesn't document a demon or a witch or giant monster destroying New York City. The disaster this time around happens to be a giant party destroying a suburban block.

TLautTaylor Lautner wasn't able to work with Gus Van Sant on "Breaking Dawn," so now he's created his own project for the director to helm.

MTV News reports that Lautner optioned a nonfiction article from The New Yorker, and has convinced Van Sant to direct it for him. "Milk" scribe Dustin Lance Black will pen the project, with Lautner in the lead role. Little more is known about the film, but it will be Lautner's first dramatic role to date.
