Ever since the clock ran down on the real-time thriller "24," fans have been itching for more Jack Bauer. Sure, it's nice that we'll get Kiefer Sutherland back on the small screen in the new Fox drama "Touch," but it's just not the same. We want Jack. We want endless hours of counter-terrorism and espionage badassery. We want more "24."
Well, though we're still waiting on official word about the movie, "24" is making a comeback… albeit in quite the unexpected way.
The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline report that actor Anil Kapoor, best known stateside for his work in "Slumdog Millionaire," has closed a rights deal with 20th Century Fox TV to produce a new version of "24" in India. Kapoor played the critical role of ill-fated Kamistan President Omar Hassan in the final season of the Fox series, but this time, he'll be tackling a very different part... as the new Jack Bauer.
"It will be a great honor for me to play Jack Bauer," Kapoor said of the announcement. "Kiefer has created an iconic character which has inspired me to bring the franchise to India. This will be my first foray to Indian television and I look forward to duplicating the standard of excellence Fox has so successfully created."
Whether or not Kapoor plans to undergo a name change or keep the Jack Bauer moniker intact remains to be seen, as does the specific plotline for "24: India" (as it's being called internally according to THR). We also don't know if viewers outside of India will ever get to see this new effort. But I for one welcome a new "24" with open arms—just as long as the real Jack Bauer gets to make a cameo at some point.
