Johnny Deppby Sterling Wong

It’s a tough economy out there right now, and even Hollywood, chief creator of dreams and fantasies, is feeling it. Even with proven box office rainmakers Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski attached, word got out last Friday that Disney was shutting down the production of "The Lone Ranger” because of its overblown $200 million price tag.

With franchises like “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and “Thor” proving that conservatively budgeted movies can still become hits, studios have seemingly tightened their reins and become more and more reluctant to greenlight expensive projects. Indeed, “The Lone Ranger” is not the only big-budget project Hollywood has closed its doors in recent months; after the jump, check out three other ambitious films that also got the boot this year.

Rise of the Planet of the ApesFROM MTV MOVIES: Not only did the apes begin to conquer the human world onscreen, but they managed to retain their top spot at the box office as well. Despite competition from four diverse new movies, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" remained the #1 movie in America over the weekend.

The sci-fi prequel took in another $27.5 million during its second weekend of release for a $104.8 million total, according to studio estimates. Starring James Franco, "Rise" is a descendent of 1968's original "Planet of the Apes" which was itself based on Pierre Boulle's 1963 novel of the same name.

Whereas "Apes" was written in the '60s but set in a distant future, "The Help" was written just a couple of years ago but is set in the '60s. The movie adaptation of the hit book about a Southern belle who collects the stories of several African-American maids opened at #2 with $25.5 million, which was much stronger than observers predicted. Perhaps they should have known better: The book, by Kathryn Stockett, was legendarily turned down by some 60 literary agents before becoming a best-seller.

As if we didn't already have enough reasons to be excited for Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity," Guillermo del Toro is here to vouch that it's going to blow our minds.

It's a movie that's taken a very long time to get into production, and even had James Cameron skeptical of its scope. But I didn't put it on my list of movies that desperately needed to be put through production in 2011 for nothing, and with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in the lead roles it seems like it could be certifiably great. Del Toro seems to think that it's going to change sci-fi films as we know them.

"I'm amazed at Alfonso the past few movies because he's completely transformed himself," he said when MTV News spoke with him recently. "['Gravity' is] incredibly well-calculated. Very human, if you know the story."

"Fright Night" doesn't hit theaters for another week still, but that doesn't mean you can't sink your teeth into the vampire thriller a little bit early.

Kid Cudi's "No One Believes Me" music video made its grand premiere today, a video that's directly pegged to next week's "Fright Night." Not only does Cudi's latest deal with the vampire menace, it also comes courtesy of filmmaker Craig Gillespie, who directed both the video and the movie. Check out what Cudi has to say about his latest in the video below:

"I kind of wrote it to the original 'Fright Night' and I wanted to stay true to the plot and story," Cudi told MTV about "No One Believes Me's" origins. "We were inspired to create the song for the movie, which is something I've never done before. It was a challenge. I didn't want it to be a cheesy, cliché type of record. I wanted it to be something people could play and absorb and enjoy without thinking this is for the 'Fright Night' movie."

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, it seemed like the complete "Star Wars" collection would never make it to Blu-Ray. Fortunately that time has since passed, and now we are graced with a sweet new trailer for the Blu-Ray collection.

Have you been craving a healthy dose of "Star Wars"? Then you're in luck, because the Blu-Ray is jam-packed with over 40 hours of special features that includes a whole bunch of stuff you haven't seen before. George Lucas might have made his fans wait much too long for this collection, but at least he's delivering the goods now.

But despite how thrilled I am about all the special features in this set, I'm more looking forward to seeing how great the "Star Wars" movies look in high definition.
