"The Hunger Games" don't begin for several more months, but you already have your first taste of the tournament thanks to the exclusive sneak peek we showed you last night at the Video Music Awards. While the footage may have appeared scarce on details at first glance, a closer look from some of the blogosphere's most prominent "Hunger Games" experts reveals that there was a lot more to digest than some initially realized.
Check out what the fans had to say about the "Hunger Games" sneak peek past the jump!
The Girl On Fire
Jennifer Lawrence is front and center in the "Hunger Games" footage, and by all accounts, her take on Katniss Everdeen gets a big thumbs up from the fans.
"She just captured Katniss onscreen," assessed Samus Belle of Sparks Will Fly, while Kimmy West of Mockingjay.net added: "The big trait about Katniss is that she's animalistic when she hunts. You can totally tell that she's been training so much for that shot."
Voice Of Reason
Though Katniss is the only character you see in the footage, she's not the only one present thanks to a voice over supplied by Liam Hemsworth's Gale.
"Basically, [Gale] is saying, 'You know how to hunt,' 'All they want is a good show,' 'Show them how good you are,'" West said of the voiceover, which she was in full support of. "I feel like it's a really good message to send across for the trailer because it's showing she's not a career tribute. She's not someone who wants to kill anyone; she just wants to live after this."
Where's The Baker?
But where we get a healthy dose of Gale, we're left completely without a trace of Josh Hutcherson as Peeta. Many fans were disappointed by his exclusion from the footage, but others are staying optimistic about his future appearances.
"I think they maybe want to wait a little bit longer on [showing] Peeta to build up the excitement even more," reasoned Arianna Ruiz of Down With the Capitol. "And Gale is still a very important part of Katniss' life."
Rue The Day
Even though the "Hunger Games" footage is light on anyone other than Katniss and Gale, there's another hidden treat that eagle-eyed fans will surely enjoy.
"Right as you see the 'Add us on Facebook' stuff, and the screen turns black, and you can hear four really high-pitched whistles, kind of like if you're not listening hard, you might miss it," West said, teasing what may or may not be a signal from Katniss' Hunger Games ally Rue. "That's really awesome. I was wondering what tune they were going to use, and it sounds really perfect for what I was thinking."
