The idea of an American remake of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" has been met with a lot of skepticism from fans of the original Swedish novels and films — but with talents like David Fincher and Daniel Craig steering the ship, smart money says that their adaptation will be interesting to behold at the very least.

But Craig, who sat down with MTV News during a recent press event for his upcoming "Cowboys & Aliens," says there's another talent altogether that's bound to convince the naysayers: Rooney Mara, the relatively unknown actress who's transforming herself into tattooed hacker Lisbeth Salander.

MelisandreWinter is coming, albeit not until next spring. Doesn't mean we can't start getting excited about "Game of Thrones" season two right now though, does it?

Casting news has been coming fast and furious on the HBO fantasy series' second season, and now two more roles have been filled out. Alas, our predictions have fallen through with this latest round of casting, but we're happy to be wrong in this case.

Entertainment Weekly reports that two of the season's most crucial characters — two of the most essential roles on the show, really — have found their live-action counterparts: Carice van Houton is Melisandre the red priestess, while Stephen Dillane clashes with kings as the fearsome Stannis Baratheon.

Dark Towerby Brian Phares

In news that's not exactly surprising but still disappointing, Universal has officially passed on Ron Howard's ambitious adaptation of "The Dark Tower." Deadline broke the news, revealing that Universal won't proceed with Howard's plan to adapt Stephen King's classic novels through three films and two seasons of television. Howard is free to shop the project to other backers, of course, but this could very well be it for his big "Dark Tower" plan.

It breaks my heart to hear that Howard's "Dark Tower" won't come to pass (at least not through Universal), though I am not the least bit surprised. The ambitious movie-TV-movie-TV-movie format raised my eyebrow from the very start. Not only did the math not make sense (there’s seven books to consider, not five) it just seemed like asking way too much of a viewer to divide their time between a movie series and a TV series.

Ron Howard, for what it's worth, this is how I would have done it -- and how you should too.

Captain Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd... the list goes on and on and on and on when it comes to the colorful characters that Johnny Depp has played. It not only makes for a fascinating actor's resume, but also a strong wealth of resources to pull from in playing Rango, the star of the animated movie of the same name that arrived on Blu-ray and DVD last week.

MTV News spoke with director Gore Verbinski about the movie late last week, and the filmmaker explained that in many ways, Rango and Johnny are very similar. Describing Rango as "a guy who actually doesn't know who he is and can be all these characters" — something that comes with the territory of being a chameleon, naturally — Verbinski said that "Johnny is like" that as well.

Harry PotterFROM MTV MOVIES: There was little doubt that when the "Harry Potter" franchise finally came to a close after a decade-long presence at the multiplex, it would do so in epically lucrative fashion. But only when "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" actually began lighting up screens last Thursday at midnight did the true extent of its box-office power become clear: The film raked in a record $43.5 million at those early screenings and ended up shattering the three-day opening record of "The Dark Knight."

"While I assumed it would have the best 'Harry Potter' debut of all time, I wasn't quite sold on the fact that it could eclipse the 'Dark Knight' record, as none of the previous films, although highly successful, have ever approached that staggering number, despite having one of the most rabid fanbases filmdom has ever seen," said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. "This was monumental, as it seems everyone wanted to be a part of the discussion, everyone wanted to say goodbye to dear friends, and everyone wanted to experience the magic on the big screen one more time."

But not everyone wanted that magical experience in 3-D. While "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" benefited from the largest 3-D launch ever, according to Box Office Mojo, a majority of ticket buyers choose 2-D screenings, with just 43 percent of its total gross coming from 3-D screenings ("Transformers: Dark of the Moon," by comparison, earned 60 percent of its opening gross from 3-D showings). So, although "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" opening marks the second-biggest 3-D opening after "Alice in Wonderland," the last "Potter" film wasn't a 3-D must-see — it was a pop-culture must-see.
