Those of us who have been excited about Disney's "Maleficent" project have been on a bit of a roller coaster ride of on-again, off-again production news.
The proposed live-action feature, which is, in a nutshell, "Sleeping Beauty" told from the titular sorceress' perspective, lost its original directorial candidate Tim Burton, due to his committments on "Dark Shadows," which, although a bummer, might have opened the door for "Black Swan" helmer Darren Aronofsky, who is reportedly being courted by Disney to step up to the plate.
When I happened upon still-attached star Angelina Jolie at the premiere of "Kung Fu Panda 2" recently, I asked her if she'd heard any news about the project or Aronofsky's involvement.
"No, [but] there's a great script," she said of the screenplay penned by "Alice In Wonderland" and "The Lion King" scribe Linda Woolverton.
Jolie has told us previously that she loves the character and is very interested in the project.
"I would love to [do it]," she said. "It's all new and being discussed, but I loved [Maleficent] when I was a little girl, she was my favorite."
So where do we stand now? At least the script is good (we hope). With regard to the story about Aronofsky being courted by Disney and Warner Brothers, I'm not sure of the Oscar-nominee's feelings on fairy tale characters, but he'd definitely add a certain visionary spice to things. Another rumored candidate, according to Heat Vision, is "Harry Potter" helmer David Yates
