Jeremy RennerThe "Bourne" movies have a new leading man: Jeremy Renner.

Weeks after Renner's name first surfaced as a "Bourne" candidate over at Latino Review, it's now been confirmed that "The Hurt Locker" star has been offered the lead in Tony Gilroy's "The Bourne Legacy." Fans of the first three installments of the series, take comfort that Renner isn't replacing Matt Damon. Rather, the 40-year-old star will reportedly play an operative who is part of a covert government program that creates assassins like Bourne.

Renner beat out the likes of rumored could-be Bournes such as Alex Pettyfer, Dominic Cooper, and Joel Edgerton (more on him in today's Casting Call.) In addition to carrying on the new "Bourne" franchise, Renner is also in the works to take over the "Mission: Impossible" flicks and is taking part in the upcoming "Avengers" reboot.

Check out the rest of Friday's biggest casting news in Hollywood including Tom Cruise's next project, as well as Josh Brolin joining a gang of "Gangsters."

Mel GibsonFROM MTV MOVIES: For much of the past year, the only times we've heard Mel Gibson's voice in public were when new snippets of his now-infamous rant tapes were released by Radar Online. You might recall the racist, sexist explosion of rage at Gibson's ex and mother of his infant daughter, Oksana Grigorieva, on the recordings, which were leaked by an unknown source to the site and revealed a dark, disturbing side to the actor whose biggest movies have often been laced with a sadistic streak.

Gibson finally broke his silence on the matter this week, sitting down with a reporter from Deadline Hollywood and explaining that the tapes were made in "one terribly awful moment in time, said to one person in the span of one day, and doesn't represent what I truly believe or how I've treated people my entire life."

After the tape scandal, as well as Gibson's anti-Semitic rant during a drunken driving arrest in 2006, the actor said he realized people might not want to see him in movies again. But with the long-delayed film "The Beaver" slated to hit screens next month and another film in the works, Gibson is resigned to his box-office fate. "I could easily not act again. It's not a problem," he said.

The HobbitPeter Jackson's behind-the-scenes work on "The Hobbit" has been a fascinating process to observe. The first 10-minute video blog that launched earlier this month was an absolute thrill for "Lord of the Rings" fans and newbies alike, of course — but even without the added advantage of moving images, Jackson's written updates are required reading for anybody interested in the art of filmmaking.

Jackson's latest "Hobbit" update takes his loyal fellowship into the screenwriting process. According to the director, there are three distinct phases in a film script's life: pre-production, production, and post.

"First, it exists before the film starts shooting," he writes in his latest Facebook entry. "In this period, which can last from months to years, the script is a theoretical document — an imaginative version of the movie."

30 Minutes or LessWhen life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. But what are you supposed to make when life straps a time bomb to your chest with an eye towards detonating in nine hours unless you rob a bank?

The answer is not bombenade, though that sounds like an awesome drink. No, the answer is "30 Minutes or Less," a new comedy that reunites "Zombieland" director Ruben Fleischer and leading man Jesse Eisenberg, albeit with less flesh-eating monsters and much more potty humor. We'll take that trade — just as long as the oft-fabled "Zombieland 2" comes to fruition eventually, of course.

A brand new red-band trailer for "30 Minutes or Less" arrived online yesterday courtesy of IGN, and you can watch it past the jump. But as always, be warned: this trailer is of the extremely unsafe for work variety. Last chance to look away!

If you haven't allowed yourself to get excited about "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" yet but you're still a sucker for ass-kicking robots, some new character posters should be enough to put you over the fence.

Mysterious villain Shockwave and heroic Autobots Bumblebee and Optimus Prime stand poised and ready to kick butt against the backdrop of a demolished city, thanks to new banner images debuted on Yahoo Movies. That's a lot of massive mechanical awesomeness!

The rest of today's news is after the jump, including a legal battle facing "The Crow" and talk of Robert Zemeckis' next movie.

Daniel Radcliffe was over the moon when we talked to him in March after his "Harry Potter" costar, Alan Rickman, had come to a performance of Radcliffe's Broadway show "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." So with the rest of the "Potter" cast in town for the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" DVD release, Radcliffe told MTV News how his former wizard pals turned out in full-force to watch him perform live.

"David Thewlis's reaction was the sweetest, I've got to say," Radcliffe said. "I know David, and he's a lovely guy, and I don't think in all the time that we've spent together we've ever talked about musicals. It's terrible. I know he's a lovely, funny, he's not a deep, heavy guy, but when someone's in that film 'Naked,' musicals probably aren't your thing. But he just loved it, and he was just over the moon. He was really proud, and it was really, really cool."

In addition to Thewlis, who plays former Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Remus Lupin, "Potter" costars Helen McCrory, Bonnie Wright, James and Oliver Phelps, Evanna Lynch and Freddie Stroma all stopped by to see it. But, according to Radcliffe, there's someone else's approval who he would love to have for his performance.

As skeptical as I may have been when I first heard about the "Battleship" movie (yes, even with Peter Berg directing and a bevy of beautiful people in the cast) I have started to feel a little excitement for the film over the past few months, thanks in large part to brief encounters with cast members Brooklyn Decker, Alexander Skarsgard and Josh Pence.

My latest cast member encounter has solidified things, however, in that Taylor Kitsch has promised bad ass aliens and refused to confirm or deny the existence of a "You sunk my Battleship!" line of dialogue (which, in my opinion, means it's totally in the movie).

“Will you get to see the aliens? F--- yeah. Why would we put aliens in and not show you?" Kitsch said during the press day for his upcoming film, "The Bang Bang Club." "This is a different movie entirely than the other [alien] ones you’ve seen."

ThorThe day of the norseman is nigh! The release of "Thor" is just two weeks away and if you're like us, you're seeing advertisements everywhere. We thought the poster was just plain ol' intense, but one actor had a different interpretation of Thor's icy gaze.

Meanwhile, if you follow anyone under 60 on Twitter, you're already well-aware that yesterday was 4/20. National Weed Day has drifted away from us like a puff of smoke in the breeze, but at least the internet lasts forever -- and as actors toked up, they also tweeted out. Plus, a "G.I. Joe" cast member is officially back for the sequel.

I'm @TravisHelwig and this is Twitter-Wood for April 21st, 2011.

Jessica AlbaIt's been eight years since the last "Spy Kids" movie, and boy, things have changed. For one, the kids aren't really kids anymore -- Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara are 22 and 18 years old, respectively, and are probably just a few years too old to be in Robert Rodriguez's "Spy Kids" Rolodex these days.

But the wheels turn, and the "Spy Kids" franchise is being relaunched this year with original director Rodriguez at the helm. It'll star a newly-expecting Jessica Alba as a retired spy mom who gets thrown back into the biz when an evil Jeremy Piven shows up to do something or other.

Dimension tossed out the first image from the movie (via Bleeding Cool), showing a positively worried Alba holding her daughter, getting ready for spy stuff. And even if the image is just a smidge on the cheesy side, we actually think there's good cause to get excited over Alba's sexy spy mom -- and, as if you needed them, we've got the reasons why past the jump.

On April 19, 2011, the global defense system known as Skynet became self-aware. The stunningly intelligent network gave mankind (and stoners) a reprieve on 4/20, but today marks the beginning of the end.

That's right — it's Judgment Day.

Don't say we didn't warn you: after multiple posts yesterday providing tips on how to survive the looming "Terminator" apocalypse and reasons why our new robot overlords might not be so bad, Skynet has officially launched its all-out offensive on mankind**. Nuclear warheads are firing off from and destroying every corner of the world as far as the eye can see, and it would appear that our ultimate destruction is imminent.

And it's all the fault of one man: Cyberdyne Systems engineer Miles Dyson.
