Ay dios mío! I'm almost afraid to say it, but I think we've finally found the perfect Will Ferrell movie.
No, I'm not talking about a sequel to "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," though that would come quite close. Instead, it's his Spanish-language comedy "Casa de mi Padre" that could very well steal la tarta de cumpleaños (see what I did there?) when it comes to the all-time great Ferrell comedies, if the film's freshly debuted trailer is any indication.
In "Casa," Ferrell plays Armando Alvarez, a Mexican rancher who falls in love with his younger brother's fiance, leading to death-defying tensions between himself, businessmen and ruthless drug lords — and, dare I say it, it looks like his funniest movie yet. See why I think so after the jump.
Baxter, You Know I Do Speak Spanish
Will has expressed great dramatic potential in films like "Stranger Than Fiction," but by now, his comedic chops are pretty easy to foresee — not that I'm sick of his antics. Quite the opposite, in fact; I could watch Ferrell's signature shtick forever and ever and ever (and a day) without getting bored. But if he's really speaking only Spanish in this latest comedy, that's actually a pretty impressive turn of events for the guy. Even his biggest detractors would have to tip their sombreros in his general direction for the international effort!
News Team, Assemble And Upgrade!
There's no Paul Rudd, Steve Carell or David Koechner in sight, but it looks like Ferrell's assembled an impressive supporting cast all the same in the form of co-stars like the dutiful Diego Luna as his brother Raul and the great Gael Garcia Bernal as the ruthless drug kingpin Onza. These are traditionally serious actors, and it's going to be a blast seeing them shed their dramatic leanings for a presumably sillier affair opposite the wonderfully weird Will.
No Country For Old SNL Cast Members
Just take a minute to soak in the tone of the "Casa de mi Padre." Forget the Spanish-speaking Ferrell; just seeing him go from "Anchorman" and similar feel-good sports glory stories to a role better played by Javier Bardem is going to be an absolute delight. Sure, tonally speaking, "Casa" could very well flop. But if it fails, it'll fail epically. Really, all this movie needs is a Danny Trejo cameo and it's pre-destined for the win.
