We asked you yesterday what you thought about the just released trailer for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," and the response was overwhelmingly positive. But what did your friendly neighborhood MTV Movies Blog team think?
From unexpected excitement to continued skepticism, the faithful wordsmiths aboard the good ship Movies Blog had a wide range of reactions to the "Apes" trailer. Check them out past the jump!
"It's easy to be skeptical of the new 'Apes' film -- after all, we are talking about a franchise about talking monkeys. That said, the concept seems intriguing, the actors look dedicated, and the CGI is shockingly realistic. Are we pinning our summer movie hopes on James Franco? Maybe! If he brings some life to the genre, it may be his biggest feat yet on his postmodern resume."
"While it's always been hard for me to watch James Franco in serious roles (let alone in a summer blockbuster), his work never ceases to intrigue me. It's also hard for me to turn down drug-addict primates. The trailer starts slow, but things start to get real once the apes escape. The final image also makes me wonder about the film's ending. I bet we all learn to peacefully co-exist."
"I'm not particularly attached to the 'Apes' series so I wasn't much interested in 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' until I saw the trailer. Now I'm definitely interested in checking out the movie. It looks like it will be a good summer popcorn action-thriller. However, I did have to stifle a snicker when Franco announced the name of the regenerative drug; overall the movie seems like it's taking itself a tad too seriously. The apes look great, though; I especially liked the scene where one was watching people sleep. Creepy cognizant apes!"
"I adore the 1968 original, and despite the fact that the franchise was chest-beat to death in the early '70's, I've remained uber-protective of its Heston-helmed roots. I'm also still nursing my wounds from the disastrous 2001 Tim Burton remake. So, call me biased, but I find this reboot a little tiresome. The WETA effects do look pretty tight, but casting promising (and pretty!) young stars Franco and Pinto is an obvious play to attract a fresh audience – plus…uh…Tom Felton? Take your stinking paws off me you damned dirty Draco Malfoy!"
"Initially I hadn't been sold on the need for another updated installment of the 'Planet of the Apes' series (especially after Tim Burton's take in 2001), but this prequel storyline totally sold me. Plus, the apes look absolutely fantastic thanks to continued great work by WETA. And it's hard to go wrong with some Tom Felton in the mix."
"I don't know that the WETA effects are enough to sustain an entire movie — though good lord do they look beautiful here — but I do know this: I'm suddenly craving bananas."
