Robert Downey Jr. has a packed shooting schedule ahead of him between "The Avengers" and other projects, but even he isn't too busy for acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.

The "Iron Man" superstar and "There Will Be Blood" director are reportedly teaming together for "Inherent Vice," an adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel about a Los Angeles private eye who wholeheartedly embraces the notions of free-love and psychedelic thinking. Deadline reports the news, but there's no indication of when the film might shoot, and even Downey and Anderson's official participation remains unconfirmed at this point.

But that's not all the news we've got for you today. Read about Steve Carell's upcoming dramatic turn, the maybe-maybe-not adaptation of "Dead Island" and more past the jump!

Avatarby Sterling Wong

Two years have passed since the Academy Awards expanded the number of Best Picture nominees from five to ten, and thanks to the enlarged field, blockbuster Hollywood productions stand a greater chance than ever at scoring a prestigious nomination.

In 2009, "Avatar" pushed "The Hurt Locker" all the way in a close race before eventually losing out on the Oscar, and this year, Christopher Nolan scored one with his thinking man’s thriller, "Inception." In fact, one could argue that Nolan contributed to the Academy’s decision to expand the Best Picture category after the backlash of "The Dark Knight," which transcended its comic book roots to become a box office and cultural phenomenon, missing out on a nomination in 2008.

If the 2009 and 2010 nominations are any indication, a big-budget production will get a shot at the coveted Best Picture award in 2011. The question is, which one? We're weighing in with some possible contenders past the jump!

Imitation may be the highest form of flattery, but we've got to imagine winning an Oscar is a close second. In which case, Nick Park, the creator of the "Wallace and Gromit" films, can now officially consider himself one of the most flattered guys out there: Park, as well as the fellow Oscar-magnet folks at Pixar and some other former animated Oscar nominees and winners, took some loving potshots from "The Simpsons" during a new episode that aired this past Sunday (February 20).

Just days before the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, the writers at "The Simpsons" (perhaps still slightly ticked from their Best Animated Film snub in 2008 for "The Simpsons Movie") skewered the awards ceremony and some of its most celebrated films and stars with a little help from guest voices like Ricky Gervais (who was the butt of some Golden-Globes-hosting-gone-awry jokes), Russell Brand and Best Actress winner Halle Berry.

Apollo 18We haven’t been able to stop watching the “Apollo 18” trailer since its online debut this past weekend. The alternate history tale set in 1973 utilizes found footage-style camerawork, and details the harrowing story of two astronauts sent on a mission to the moon, which ushers disastrous (and deadly?) results after mysterious otherworldly forces intervene.

For you history buffs out there, director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s premise is based on the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project – a joint mission between the US and Russia – dubbed Apollo 18 (though take what you will from the creative liberties clearly at play in the film’s script). We imagine the Hollywood pitch meeting for this flick included the tagline, “It’s ‘Cloverfield’ meets ‘Moon’ meets ‘Paranormal Activity’ meets ‘Apollo 13!’” Who’s gonna say no to that? Certainly not us!

Now that our interest is sufficiently piqued by the cryptic teaser, here’s a guide to our thoughts on the 10 weirdest, most alarming and compelling moments from the trailer. In case you haven’t watched it yet, you may want to check it out in full first — just to have an idea of the chaos that’s about to ensue.

Daniel Radcliffe's days with the "Harry Potter" franchise are almost at an end (okay, who are we kidding? They'll never really be at an end!), but his dealings with the supernatural are far from over.

The erstwhile boy who lived is next set to star in "The Woman in Black," an adaptation of the Susan Hill novel from director James Watkins and screenwriter Jane Goldman. The thriller sees Radcliffe going toe-to-toe with a haunting presence that wouldn't be out of place within the "Harry Potter" universe, but make no mistake—this is a horse of a different color.

We've already seen photos of Radcliffe on the set of "The Woman in Black," and now we've got another glimpse at the actor's latest role courtesy of the film's official Facebook page.

These days, you might know AMC best for housing "The Walking Dead." A fantastic show to be sure, but you're missing out on another colossal television effort if you're not watching the network's "Mad Men." The Jon Hamm-starring drama weaves a carefully crafted story dealing with deception, racism, struggling businesses and other strong topics that are just as compelling today as they were during the show's 1960s setting.

After four strong seasons on television, it's not unreasonable to wonder whether or not "Mad Men" could take the leap from the small screen to the big one. During a recent press junket for "The Adjustment Bureau," we spoke with man-child accounts man Roger Sterling himself – actor John Slattery – about the possibility of a "Mad Men" movie, and he seemed game for the idea.

"Yeah, I mean, sure," he said when asked if he could envision such a film. But the possibility of a "Mad Men" movie isn't what interests Slattery the most – for the actor, he's simply impressed with series creator Matthew Weiner's seemingly endless ability to create stories set in the "Mad Men" universe.

Charlie Sheenby Patrick Hester

Looks like Charlie Sheen is ready to throw Hollywood another curveball, and we mean that literally and figuratively: look out world, Wild Thing is back… again!

According to TMZ, the embattled actor is ready and willing to reprise his role as Ricky ‘Wild Thing’ Vaughn in another “Major League” sequel, pending a greenlit script.

If – and it's a big if when considering his very public battle with addiction, among other woes – another "Major League" comes to pass, it would mark the fourth entry in the series. But if Sheen had his way, that third film – "Back to the Minors" – wouldn't exist; in his words, the movie is an "abortion" and shouldn't be considered a part of the series.

Interviews are tricky. Getting your subject to open up about their passion projects, films they have in development or other burning topics is not always an easy task. Wording is essential in getting an effective question across, and for our money, there's no better way to get an answer than to ask for a simple yes or no response.

That's how MTV's Josh Horowitz framed his questions to "The Adjustment Bureau" stars Matt Damon and Emily Blunt in the latest edition of "After Hours." By asking yes-or-no questions, we learned some stunning truths about Damon's attraction to Sarah Palin, Blunt's experience eating pound cake and what both of them would endure if the world's continued survival rested squarely on their shoulders. (Spoiler: it involves sleeping with our esteemed "After Hours" host.)

The answers are at once provocative, profound and peculiar. Check 'em out in the video above.

G.I. JoeEarlier this month, an alleged short list of directors for "G.I. Joe 2" appeared online, listing "The Italian Job" director F. Gary Gray and "Never Say Never" documentarian Jon Chu as the frontrunners for the job.

While further updates on those directors' courtship of the "Joe" brand are currently unavailable, MTV News had the chance to speak with Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner about the developing sequel and he confirmed that numerous directors are currently in consideration.

"It's in the works! We have a really good script and we're right now talking to a number of directors," he told us. When asked if the director search officially puts original helmer Stephen Sommers out of the running, Goldner replied: "I don't know if I can comment. I don't know if the studio has commented yet. But we're certainly talking to some people."
