With Cobra already on the rise, it's time to start looking towards "G.I. Joe 2." There's just one problem: the sequel lacks a director, following the official departure of Stephen Sommers earlier this year.
Latino Review got to the news first, and The Hollywood Reporter reiterated today that Gray and Chu are two of the top candidates for the "Joe" gig. Does that make either one of them the right fit for the franchise, though? You tell us – click past the jump and vote in our poll to tell us who you think should direct the "G.I. Joe" sequel!
F. Gary Gray
With credits like "The Italian Job" and "Law Abiding Citizen" under his belt, there's little doubt that Gray knows his way around an action film. More importantly, "The Italian Job" demonstrated his ability to handle an ensemble; there are several big names involved in that picture, and just about all of them are adequately serviced. Given the massive amount of characters involved in the "G.I. Joe" universe, that skill is going to be very, very valuable for whoever winds up in the director's chair. "G.I. Joe" would mark his first franchise effort, and while it's a big one to leap into, you have to start somewhere. This could certainly be a fit for Gray.
Jon M. Chu
Chu directed the recent Justin Bieber documentary and two "Step Up" films – not exactly the same demographic as "Joe" – but that said, "Never Say Never" actually earned high marks from Beliebers and non-Beliebers alike, showing that the doc has a surprising amount of wide appeal. Plus, think back to "Fame" director Kevin Tancharoen's "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" short – he seemed like a very unlikely candidate to execute a dark and gritty reimagining of a popular franchise, but as they say in the game, it was a flawless victory. Could Chu deliver a similar surprise given the chance to tackle the "Joe" sequel?
Today's report stresses that Gray and Chu aren't the only directors meeting with the "Joe" producers, so if neither of these candidates are up your alley, who would you want to see behind the lens? Let us know in the comments section and on Twitter, and make sure to cast your vote in the poll below!
