Peter JacksonFans of "The Hobbit" have waited with baited breath to see if the long-anticipated, seemingly troubled-from-the-get-go production would get off the ground, particularly after director Guillermo del Toro dropped out of the project last May.

Since then, Peter Jackson has stepped in, but Wednesday night the film had another setback as the Oscar-winning director underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer, according to a statement from production.

Filming was expected to start sometime next month, but will be delayed as Jackson, who was admitted to New Zealand's Wellington Hospital after experiencing acute stomach pains, heals from the surgery. According to Entertainment Weekly, a New Line Cinema rep confirmed that the director "is resting comfortably and doctors expect a full recovery."

The statement from production also assured that Jackson's "surgery is not expected to impact on his directing commitment to 'The Hobbit' beyond a slight delay to the start of filming."

Just how "slight" the delay ends up being remains to be seen. The two parts of Jackson's "Hobbit" will feature many actors reprising their roles from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, including Sir Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood (not to mention that rumored $1 million, two-minute cameo by Orlando Bloom.)

Parts 1 and 2 of "The Hobbit" are slated for December 2012 and December 2013 releases, respectively.

Do you think "The Hobbit" will continue to face setbacks throughout filming or will it be smooth sailing after Jackson's recovery?

Kristen StewartWith Amanda Seyfried featured in the upcoming adaptation of "Red Riding Hood," could Kristen Stewart be the next actress to accomplish every young girl's dream and, quite literally, step into a fairytale? That seems to be the talk surrounding the "Twilight" star and Universal's buzzed-about action-adventure, "Snow White and the Huntsman."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 20-year-old's name keeps cropping up at Universal.

In fact, while other actresses have already screen-tested for the latest adaptation of the classic (including, among others, Stewart's "Runaways" co-star Riley Keough, "Sucker Punch" actress Emily Browning, and Felicity Jones, whose "Like Crazy" was a Sundance breakthrough), the studio seems anxious to make it Stewart's first project after "Breaking Dawn" wraps up.

We've had our own thoughts on who should snag the coveted role as Snow White in director Rupert Sanders' modern day take on the Brothers Grimm tale, but a post-"Twilight" Stewart could be more than enough of a draw for Universal to call off the search for any other actresses.

Whether or not Stewart goes from Bella Swan to Snow White, she would certainly be in good company. The project has already had big names like Johnny Depp (for said Huntsman, natch) and Charlize Theron (in talks to play the evil queen Ravenna) thrown into the ring. In fact, THR also reports today that Viggo Mortensen is eyeing a role (likely the Huntsman) in the film.

Do you think Kristen Stewart would make for a good Snow White?

Even though Ed Helms threw us for a loop when he informed us former president Bill Clinton won't be making a cameo appearance in "The Hangover 2," we did get at least one thing right: Paul Giamatti will.

The actor was in Park City, Utah to promote his film "Win Win" at Sundance, but when he talked to MTV News he let us know that his cameo in "The Hangover 2" was already in the can.

He filmed his scene in Bangkok a month or so ago, and seemed like he had a very fun time doing it. Fortunately he was also willing to shed some light on his previously unannounced role, especially when prodded by his "Win Win" co-star, Bobby Cannevale. His question: is Giamatti playing Mel Gibson's role, or Mel Gibson himself?

"I do, I play Mel Gibson," Giamatti teased, but then quickly retracted it. "No, I think Liam Neeson plays that."

Continuing with our "Game of Thrones" coverage — which has recently included snippets from interviews with stars Emilia Clarke, Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, and author George R.R. Martin — today's installment touches on some general info for those who haven't yet read Martin's glorious "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series but are curious about the premise of the beloved novels and upcoming HBO show.

So, what the heck is this show about? When MTV News caught up with the show's writers, Dan Weiss and David Benioff, I asked how they describe it to people who think it looks like a TV version of "Lord of the Rings."

"I kind of start by saying that it's a show about power," Benioff said. "I think some people think, 'Oh, I don't want to watch a fantasy show because I'm not that into magic,' but one of the things that is great about George's books is that they don't rely overly much on magic. It's really not about wizards casting fireballs and witches on broomsticks and 300-foot-tall monsters tearing down castles," he explained. "It's really about the human story."

Long distance relationships are difficult enough to master in real life; it's no wonder Hollywood has had trouble capturing their complexities on the big screen.

Thankfully, a Sundance gem called "Like Crazy," which has quickly become one of the buzziest entries at this year's festival, has just changed all that with a truthful and bittersweet portrayal of managing — and, as often as not, failing to manage — love from afar.

Directed by Drake Doremus, the mostly improvised movie follows a young couple ("Star Trek's" Anton Yelchin, 21 and relative newcomer Felicity Jones, 27, in what deserves to be a breakout role) and their relationship over the course of eight years.

MTV News got the two stars together for an interview to talk about the Sundance fav, as well as how they attained their rooted-in-reality on-screen relationship. "We went to a training camp on how to be friends," joked Yelchin, as Jones cracked back, "We hated each other at first, but we managed to make it work."

Jay-ZFROM MTV.COM: When Jay-Z sampled "It's a Hard Knock Life" from the classic Broadway show-turned-movie musical "Annie," who would have guessed it was simply a sneak preview of bigger things to come? It's been announced that Jay has teamed up with Overbrook Entertainment, a film production company whose partners include Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz.

One of the first projects on the Jay-Z/Overbook agenda will, in fact, be remaking "Annie." After rumors hit the Net about the possibility of the update, Variety confirmed Wednesday (January 26) that Sony will bring the reimagining of the musical about a spirited orphan to the big screen.

Will and Jada plan to make a family affair out of this latest endeavor as their daughter, 10-year-old Willow Smith (who scored a massive hit this year with the infectious "Whip My Hair"), will play the coveted lead role.

'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'In the spirit of the old adage, "No news is good news," the filmmakers behind "Cloverfield" — director Matt Reeves, Writer Drew Goddard and Producer J.J. Abrams — are still thinking about a sequel. They just haven't put any words to paper yet.

MTV News caught up with Reeves today to chat about the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release of "Let Me In" (expect more detailed info on those special features — specifically the car crash sequence — soon) and naturally had to ask about the progress on "Cloverfield 2."

"We would love to do it, we just haven’t figured out the idea that we want to do yet," Reeves said honestly. "J.J. [Abrams] has been very busy with 'Super 8' and he’s really busy with it now, obviously because they’ve got a release date to make and he’s busily working in editorial," he explained.

The last time we checked in on Jason Segel's "Muppets" movie, he saddened us with news that Paul Rudd will NOT be in the film, but teased the fact that we can expect a bunch of other celeb cameos (maybe Lady Gaga, probably Michael Cera. Hooray for ambiguity!).

Anyway, one lady that audiences will indeed see in the film is Segel's "Gulliver's Travels" co-star, Emily Blunt. When MTV News caught up with the charming actress recently, while she was doing press for "Gnomeo and Juliet" with fellow voice talent (and Patrick Stewart impressionist) James McAvoy, we asked about her day on the film. What followed was a hilarious exchange between Blunt and McAvoy — the latter of whom did a fine job of helping prod Blunt for more information.

"I did do a day on 'The Muppets,' yes," Blunt told us.

"Who do you play?" McAvoy cuts in.

FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: Thanks to the ever-present drama of "The Twilight Saga," we'd sorta come to think of vampires as sensitive, tortured, hopeless romantics—rather than the undead, blood-sucking, squirrel-murdering night demons they truly are. But according to Elizabeth Reaser, who plays Cullen family matriarch Esme, Kristen Stewart's onscreen transformation from human to vampire in "Breaking Dawn" will not be some softhearted emo sobfest.

"There's been some really cool stuff in the Cullen house with Bella," she told MTV News when we caught up with her at the Sundance Film Festival. "There's been some interesting transformations happening."

Natalie PortmanChristoper Nolan got snubbed! Andrew Garfield got screwed! And "Hereafter" got a Visual Effects nod but "Tron: Legacy didn't, because, geez...really, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, really?!

Yes, yesterday's Oscar nomination roll-out brought a fair amount of anger-inducing surprises. But it also delivered — predictably, soothingly — what we can always expect: a slew of statements from the lucky nominees and those connected to their films. As usual, their comments ranged from the funny and self-deprecating to the bland and self-serious. Read on for the highlights, the low lights, and the OMG-we're-so-over-awards-season-lights.
