Rooney Mara vs. Noomi Rapace

The first official images of Rooney Mara as "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" heroine Lisbeth Salander hit the Web yesterday, courtesy of W magazine, and right now they're one of the hottest things the Internet has to offer. Millions of fans have turned to Google to find the images, propelling Mara's name onto the list of Google Hot Trends (quite a coveted honor). It's not hard to see why.

Sporting a jagged black hairdo, lip piercing, "Salander" tattoo across her exposed chest and a whole lot of blood on her hands, Mara looks every bit like the intelligent, emotionally damaged, badass Lisbeth I envisioned while reading Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy. She's even got that "I don't give a s---" look on her face and, more importantly, in her eyes. And so I'm quite excited to see if Mara does justice to the role when David Fincher's American adaptation of the book hits theaters next December. Read More...

Happythankyoumoreplease posterIt's always been a bit surprising to me that the actor who's made the smallest splash thanks to his role on "How I Met Your Mother" is leading man Josh Radnor.

Sure, we all know it's Neil Patrick Harris who makes the show great, the adorable relationship between Lily and Marshall that provides its emotional center, and Robin Sparkles' sporadic appearances that crack us up, but the show is about Radnor's character Ted Mosby's quest for true love. And yet Radnor hasn't broken out in Hollywood since the show premiered in 2005.

Well that might be changing this year. The first theatrical trailer for his film "Happythankyoumoreplease" -- which he directed, wrote and stars in -- hit the Web today, and it actually looks pretty great. When the film premiered at Sundance last January, it won raves and the festival's prestigious Audience Award. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Read More...

Paul GreengrassDespite producer Scott Rudin's claims that the long-anticipated Angelina Jolie-starring 3-D "Cleopatra" flick is right around the corner, that film's potential director Paul Greengrass is planning to bring another famous historical figure to life (and death) first.

New York Magazine reports that Greengrass has written a movie called "Memphis" based on his own original research that will follow the events leading up to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968. How this film affects Greengrass' involvement in the aforementioned "Cleopatra" remains to be seen. Read More...

MTV's Josh Horowitz has done some questionably tasteful, unquestionably hilarious things in the pursuit of journalism, most of them as part of MTV's "After Hours" series. He's taken shots to the groin courtesy of Jason Segel and Jack Black, went pantsless at a slumber party with Jessica Alba and tested the American accents of the "Harry Potter" cast.

In his latest such video endeavor, "Fanline," Josh asks the cast of "The Dilemma" -- Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly and Winona Ryder -- to answer questions emailed or tweeted by their loyal fans. Interestingly enough, every one of the questions comes from a guy named Josh.

With vampire flicks all the rage these days, it was only a matter of time before someone did a remake of the 1985 horror-comedy flick "Fright Night." The movie, about a teenager who discovers that his next-door neighboor is a bloodsucker, has a huge cult following that even gathers once a year for a convention. So it should come as no surprise that a "Fright Night" redo has already been filmed and is set to hit theaters on August 19.

What might surprise you is that Colin Farrell has been tapped to play the aforementioned vampire, Jerry Dandrige, in the flick. And he's not the only familiar name you'll see in the credits: "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin is also aboard as the neighbor who discovers Farrell's secret, Christopher "McLovin" Mintz-Plasse plays vampire convert "Evil" Ed Thompsons, "Harry Potter" alum David Tennant is vamp-hunting actor Peter Vincent, and "Solitary Man" breakout Imogen Poots portrays love interest Amy, with Toni Collette and James Franco's brother David also popping up. When MTV News chatted with Farrell at the press day for the WWII drama "The Way Back," we talked with the star about how close the remake hews to the original... and why he took on the role.

"I mean, it's close enough in structure and story [to the original], but there are some things that have been changed," Farrell told us. "Peter Vincent's a lot younger, and what he does has kind of been put into a very contemporary setting. There are some changes." Read More...

Rooney Mara in The Girl With the Dragon TattooThe first look at a movie is so important. It sets the tone for our attitude toward the film and can either pique interest or totally demolish it. Today's first-look photo of Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander on the cover of W got us seriously pumped for director David Fincher's upcoming adaptation of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." Mara looked every bit the part of the emotionally damaged, seriously brilliant, tattoo-and-piercing-sporting heroine Stieg Larsson wrote about in his best-selling "Millennium" trilogy.

In honor of this awesome unveiling, we here at MTV News decided it'd be fun to look back at five other recent first looks that have done a bang-up job of getting us primed and pumped for the movies they promote. Check out our list after the jump! Read More...

Rooney Mara in The Girl With the Dragon TattooA few weeks back, some grainy paparazzi pics of Rooney Mara dressed as Lisbeth Salander for David Fincher's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" adaptation hit the Internet. They were hard to read and, frankly, a bit of a letdown. Today, however, fans of Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy are being treated to the real deal.

W magazine has just unveiled their new cover, offering the first official -- and, yes, sexy -- photo of Mara as the badass, lip-ring-sporting, tattoo-rocking investigator/computer hacker heroine. There are piercings, tattoos, blood and cleavage galore in this puppy, and anyone who's read the books must admit that Mara 100 percent looks the part.

This past summer, rumors started popping up that gravelly voiced Seth Rogen was in talks to take on a role in the big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical "Rock of Ages." The rumors did seem a bit strange, especially since they seemed to stem from the fact that the actor attended a showing of the musical in Toronto while there to film Sarah Polley's "Take This Waltz." Toronto's The Star suggested that he was doing research to play the role of "Rock of Ages" narrator Lonny, and the rumor mills were a-spinning.

MTV News chatted with Rogen at the recent press day for "The Green Hornet" (in theaters this Friday, January 14), and asked the comedic actor whether he's prepping to unveil his singing voice to the moviegoing world in the flick. His answer wasn't exactly surprising.

"I heard that rumor, but I can't sing at all," Rogen told us. "I would be the worst guy to put in that movie. I saw 'Rock of Ages.' It was pretty good. I liked the music. But I can't sing. I think people should be aware of that," he laughed. "Yeah, I know nothing about any real version of that." Read More...

Back in June 2009, Winona Ryder confirmed that a sequel to the angst-ridden 1989 cult classic "Heathers" was indeed in the works, telling Empire magazine: "I swear to God. But for some reason Dan [Waters, writer of the original] and Michael [Lehmann, director] don't want to talk about it. There is a story, and Christian [Slater] has agreed to come back as a kind of Obi-Wan character."

We were cautiously optimistic at the time, thinking that their could be a way to continue the original's tale, which follows a high-school girl named Veronica (Ryder) who enlists the help of rebel J.D. (Slater) to exact vengeance upon the wildly popular and malicious trio of girls who rule the school and are all named -- you guessed it -- Heather. Sadly, we haven't heard much about the project since. So, when MTV News caught up with Ryder at the press day for her new comedy "The Dilemma," we absolutely had to ask her for a status update on the sequel.

"There was an idea, and I was sort of like on their back about like, "We've gotta do it because, you know, Heathers exist outside of high school," Ryder told us. "And there was this whole idea that Dan [Waters], you know, came up with with some little additions from me. At one point, I really wanted it to happen and was trying to get everyone riled up. But last I heard, who knows?" Read More...

In case you missed the memo, "Battle: Los Angeles" is a war movie about an alien invasion. Except, since it's a war movie (featuring marines led by Aaron Eckhart) about, you know, aliens trying to colonize Earth rather than wiping out humanity and pilfering our natural resources, it's plenty different than "Independence Day."

Columbia Pictures once again lays this point on us in the latest trailer for the flick, offering up several more ohmygodwhattheeff moments and a broader take on the story than we saw in the previous trailers. That means less Eckhart, but a better portrayal of the narrative style of the film. Read More...
