In case you haven't heard by now, an unconfirmed report has surfaced that Jon Favreau won't be directing "Iron Man 3," ending his involvement with the franchise after directing the first two "Iron Man" movies.
It's hard to imagine "Iron Man" without Favreau. As much as Robert Downey Jr. put a face on the Armored Avenger, Favreau was equally responsible for taking the Marvel Studios property to tremendous heights. If the reports are true, then Favreau will certainly be missed by "Iron Man" fans everywhere.
Thankfully, Favreau himself isn't going anywhere, what with "Cowboys & Aliens" on the horizon and other pictures in the pipeline as well. In case he needs further advice for where to go next instead of "Iron Man 3," we've got a few suggestions past the jump!
Keep Shooting, Tex!
If the "Cowboys & Aliens" trailer told us anything, it's that A) Daniel Craig looks fantastic as an old west gunslinger, and B) Favreau is a heck of an action filmmaker. Indeed, we would encourage the director to keep trucking along on the sci-fi/western mash-up without thinking too hard about his next move — unless that move involves a "Cowboys" sequel, that is! — as he has more than enough on his plate with this latest comic book adaptation.
Enjoy A "Magic" Vacation
After "Cowboys," the next movie on Favreau's dance card is Disney's "Magic Kingdom." The big budget flick focuses on a family that's trapped at Disneyland after closing, with the theme park coming to life all around them. It sounds like a great fit for Favreau, a skilled pro when it comes to family-friendly action and comedy.
Contract Sequelitis
But what should Favreau do once "Cowboys" and "Magic Kingdom" are behind him? Well, the man certainly has his fair share of widely loved films, like "Elf" and "Zathura." Few people would argue about seeing sequels to either of those films — why not return to the well and see what comes up?
Get Original
We don't mean that as an insult — as far as we're concerned, Favreau is one of the best directors in town. But between "Iron Man," "Cowboys" and "Magic Kingdom," we'd be lying if we said we're not itching for some from-the-ground-up original ideas from the director. Coming off of those big budget features, Favreau could do wonders with an entirely unique science fiction concept of his own. We would be among the first in line, if nothing else!
Don't Go Anywhere!
By which we mean, don't leave "Iron Man 3." Favreau is such an important part of that franchise that we can scarcely imagine it without him. Whatever beef is going on between Marvel and Favreau, clear it up fast — we want our "Iron Man" director back, and we want him back now!
