Confession time: I only got into George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series this past year, and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. There are only four novels released of the planned seven so far (damn you, George) and they clock it at an average of 100 pages a tome, but from the first page of the first novel in the series, "Game of Thrones," you become hooked.
If this is the first time you're hearing the words "Game of Thrones" in a sentence and you're a fan of epic fantasy, go out to your nearest bookstore and buy the novel. Once you're done, plan on subscribing to HBO in the spring, because everything I've heard about their upcoming adaptation makes it look amazing. And since I don't expect all of you to have been keeping religious tabs on their making0of website, Entertainment Weekly has made it easy on you by sharing a very exciting first look at photos from the series. As part of our Thankful Week here at MTV News, we've selected the top five folks in entertainment for whom we're most thankful. Tim Burton is high on our list (check out the story here), due in large part to the overwhelming success of "Alice in Wonderland" and his 20-plus innovative years in the biz. Lucky for us, we chatted with the man himself recently about all things "Alice," and got a few quick updates on four of his upcoming projects: "Dark Shadows," "Frankenweenie," "The Addams Family" and "Maleficent." Yesterday we got the news that Warner Bros. is rebooting the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" franchise with a new film.... but without the involvement of creator Joss Whedon, and presumably without "Buffy" film star Kristy Swanson and TV series headliner Sarah Michelle Gellar. We asked in a poll who you guys thought should play the titular vampire waster in the reboot, and so far you've almost unanimously endorsed Gellar's return to the title role. But if Whedon's sarcastic response to the reboot is any indication, that is not going to be happening any time soon.
"I'm glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film," Whedon wrote in an email to E! Online. "This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself." American Music Awards tweets consumed most of the Twitter-Wood feed Sunday night, with Justin Bieber pulling in the most celebrity endorsements by far. Personally, however, I'd like to endorse Nathan Fillion's perspective on the evening, as he remained focused on what really matters.
Airports, however, weren't nearly as luxurious as the AMAs this weekend, and if you were flying you were probably worried about whether the TSA was going to scan you or give you a pat-down. Samm Levine proposed a trick to beating the system, while Judd Apatow pondered parenting decisions. Find out if you agree with either of them after the jump, right beneath John Hodgman's expectations for "Mad Men" Season 5.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is Twitter-Wood for November 22, 2010. Read more...

Vampires are all the rage these days, what with the teen angst of the "Twilight Saga," the twenty-something angst of "The Vampire Diaries" and the soon-to-be historical angst of "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" heating up the big and small screens. Now, the gal who made that perfect combo of teen angst and vampire slaying cool in the first place is headed back to theaters. Warner Bros. announced today that a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot is officially in the works.
The original "Buffy" movie hit screens back in 1992, with Kristy Swanson playing the stake-wielding slayer. But it was in 1997, when "Buffy" screenwriter Joss Whedon spearheaded a TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (pictured above) in the title role, that the sassy, ass-kicking slayer truly exploded into pop-culture consciousness. The show was a huge hit, catapulting Gellar to superstardom and, over the course of its seven-season run, racking up critical praise and a rabid fan base. Read more...

If you caught our "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" premiere live stream last week then you've already been introduced to the fact that I am a pretty huge "Harry Potter" fan. I've been reading these books since I was 11 years old and seen each film the weekend it's been released since "Sorcerer's Stone" first hit theaters.
That being said, I've also kept up to date on the "Twilight" franchise, though I didn't get into the books until after "Eclipse" was released. I thought "Breaking Dawn" was a pretty big letdown (so sue me, I thought Edward was going to reclaim his "soul" and return to his human form, allowing him and Bella to live happily ever after without her being changed to a vampire), and I haven't been in love with the movies. So while my "Twilight" knowledge ranks up there with the best of them, I wouldn't say I'm the series' biggest fan. Read more...

In the new romantic dramedy "Love & Other Drugs" (out November 24), Jake Gyllenhaal gets it on with Anne Hathaway over and over and over again. In the upcoming sci-fi thriller "Source Code" (out April 15) he has to relive the same eight minutes of another man's life over and over and over again. And, each time, it ends the same way: with him getting blown up. While the whole having sex with Anne Hathaway thing sure sounds preferable, the newly released trailer for "Source Code" makes a strong case that the latter option is equally as awesome.
In the flick, Gyllenhaal plays Captain Colter Stevens, a decorated soldier tasked with figuring out who bombed a Chicago commuter train. And here's the twist: As part of the titular "Source Code" experiment, Stevens investigates the bombing by inhabiting another man's body for the last eight minutes of his life. As it happens, said man was on the train that went boom for those precious 480 seconds, and Stevens must relive the explosive incident ad nauseum, gathering clues each time, so that he can discover the bomber's identity and prevent a second, much deadlier, terrorist attack from killing millions of Chicagoans. It was nearly 10 p.m. after a long day of shooting on location in Dubai on "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol," but Jeremy Renner was still full of energy. Maybe he was still amped on adrenaline after weeks of perilous stunt work. Just one look at photos from the "Mission" set — Tom Cruise treating the 2,217-foot-tall Burj Khalifa tower like it's the world's tallest jungle gym — makes clear just how nuts the shoot has been.
Whatever the case, Renner was stoked to be honored during MTV News' Thankful Week as one of the actors we're most grateful for in 2010. During our extended chat — which you can read here — we touched on everything from the "Mission" shoot and his upcoming superhero turn in "The Avengers" to why it's now difficult to head into his local Starbucks. But one particular bit of "Mission" news jumped out: Renner confirmed that he is indeed being groomed to take over the franchise from Tom Cruise. Read more...

Hopefully you were one of millions who saw "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" at least once over the weekend because now that it's been open to the general public for three days, we're definitely ready to talk about "Part 2." For those of you who haven't seen "Part 1" yet, what are you doing reading this? Get your little patootie to your nearest theater for the next two and half hours and then come back and talk with us.
It seems that the big question we were all focusing on in "Part 1" was where the first film would end. Now that we know, it only seems logical that we talk about where "Part 2" will open. Obviously we all know the film will close with the epilogue and will logically pick up from where "Deathly Hallows: Part 1" left off, but there are several different story lines that could be used to kick off the film. Hit the jump to see the different scenes we speculate could open "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2." Be warned, some minimal spoilers are included after the jump, so if you haven't seen "Part 1" yet it's probably not a good idea to keep reading. Read more...

Poor Lindsay Lohan. The girl can't even get a gig as a porn star these days. After a tumultuous past year, Lohan finally looked like she was getting her career back on track by landing the lead role in "Inferno," a biopic about porn star Linda Lovelace.
Director Matthew Wilder even moved production of the film from Louisiana to more expensive Los Angeles back in September to accommodate Lohan. But Deadline reports that Wilder and the "Inferno" gang have finally given up on the troubled actress, tapping "Watchmen" star Malin Akerman as her replacement.
"My understanding is that Lindsay was dropped as she's impossible to insure and the producers loved Malin," an insider told Deadline. Akerman's rep has since confirmed the casting. Read more...
