It's hard to believe that when "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" hits theaters on November 19 it will have been almost nine years to the day since the release of the first flick, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."
A lot has happened since the first time Harry, Ron and Hermione first set foot in the hallowed halls of Hogwarts, not the least of which is that young stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have grown up right before audiences' eyes.
Radcliffe was just an awkward 11-year-old when the first "Potter" flick went before cameras, and now he's a dashing 21-year-old with a rabid female fan base and a couple of very adult roles under his belt -- including a soul-and-private-part-bearing turn in Broadway's "Equus." Watson was just 10, and now she's a well-spoken, independent, beautiful 20-year-old attending college at Brown University. And Grint -- the old man of the bunch -- was 12, and now boasts his own throng of adoring female fans and what looks to be a promising post-"Potter" film career. Read more...

In a move that rips the hearts clean out of the chests of extraterrestrial enthusiasts and "Independence Day" fans all over the world, it appears that Roland Emmerich is not getting into "The Zone" for his next movie.
The Hollywood Reporter states that the found-footage alien movie has been canceled with one week to go before shooting was set to start. The reasons are a bit murky, though one possible explanation lies in the fact that "the found-footage trope is becoming overplayed."
Is it becoming overplayed? That depends on your tastes, really, but there's certainly no shortage of found-footage movies out there, even if Emmerich isn't getting in on the party. After the jump, check out our roundup of films from that genre. Read more...

Channing Tatum battled evil with action-figure-inspired technology in "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," but he may be scaling things down a bit to help out America's youth with Jonah Hill. Tatum reportedly wants in and is set to begin negotiations for the Hill-written big-screen adaptation of the '80s cop show that launched Johnny Depp's career, "21 Jump Street." While the film has a part for Johnny Depp in a "really funny cameo" if he wants it, he's far too old to play the lead, seeing as the cops in "Jump Street" go undercover as high-school students to root out crime.
Enter Tatum, who is now the front runner for the movie's lead role, according to Deadline. The studio thought Tatum and Hill made a good on-screen pair, and if all goes as planned production should begin next spring with "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller overseeing things. We've all been so distracted by another adaptation, of-sorts, of a classic 18th century novel (I'm talking about "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," of course), that the newest version of "Jane Eyre" has slipped right under the radar. But the trailer for the latest big-screen incarnation of Charlotte Brontë's classic tale, starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender, just hit... and it has definitely caught our attention.
Most people should know the basic premise of the novel, which follows an orphan named Jane Eyre (Wasikowska) who ends up working as a governess for the wealthy Edward Rochester (Fassbender), who is hiding a terrible secret. The trailer for the film, though, seems to play the whole story off as a horror-thriller -- which, I guess, we could argue that it is. Read more...

Through MTV's series of "After Hours" videos, host Josh Horowitz has always sought to help viewers become better, happier, more productive people. He's teamed with "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" star Russell Brand for a very interesting lesson in manners, enlisted the help of "The Other Guys" Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg to demonstrate what NOT to do with sharp knives, and even illustrated the proper way to respond to getting stuck on an escalator with director M. Night Shyamalan and a clothing-averse Penthouse Pet.
Josh's latest video, filmed with "Jason Schwartzman, aims to help you with any strange legal woes that may currently be chapping your hindquarters.
Charged with bestiality, coveting thy neighbor's wife, or any range of other crimes? Dumbass grandpa doesn't know how to use the Internet? "Schwartzman & Horowitz: Attorneys-At-Law" are your guys. Read more...

Has "The Dark Knight" screenwriter Jonathan Nolan (and brother of director Christopher) written the next "Titanic"? That's the question we're asking today given the announcement of a new project from the scribe called "Inception," "Hell and Gone."
The Hollywood Reporter has the news, stating that "The Disappearance of Alice Creed" filmmaker J Blakeson is currently in negotiations to direct "Hell and Gone," based on a screenplay from Nolan about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The project is set up at Warner Bros. with Donald De Line and Ed McDonnel producing and Courtenay Valenti overseeing the production.
Although little is known about the plot of "Hell and Gone," THR describes the movie as "a 'Titanic'-like historical tragedy and love story revolving around the Great Chicago Fire." Read more...

Many people were thankful for Conan O'Brien's return to late-night television Monday night via TBS, but not nearly enough viewers appreciated the event first and foremost for the great Larry King TwitPic post that it made possible. King was one of a few outstanding image-sharers earning spots on our highlight reel today. Others receiving the honor include Andy Milonakis with Snoop Dogg, and a shot that may make you wish you were drinking with Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Florence and the Machine yesterday.
Their enthusiasm was nearly matched by Michelle Rodriguez, who joined Ice-T in committing to acquiring "Call of Duty: Black Ops" (she came close enough to identifying its rightful name). Unfortunately, Chloe Moretz won't be able to play it, but if she were older it would be on her to-do list. Check out those tweets, plus Darren Bousman getting sentimental about his "Saw" experiences, down below.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are already hard at work reprising their roles as the titular eccentric sleuth and his faithful sidekick Dr. Watson in "Sherlock Holmes 2," the sequel to director Guy Ritchie's 2009 box-office hit. But while the boys are back in town -- or rather the U.K. -- to shoot the movie, Rachel McAdams, who played the original's lone substantial female character, has yet to step foot on the sequel's set. And, as McAdams tells it, she might never.
"It's kind of all still in the process," she told MTV News at the junket for her new comedy "Morning Glory," which opens November 10. "They're still doing script work, and we'll see." Read more...

So it isn't technically "Harry Potter" week just yet -- the movie doesn't come out until next Friday, November 19 -- but since "Deathly Hallows" has been split into two parts we're following suit. For the next two weeks and (let's face it) probably beyond, we here at MTV News will be celebrating the theatrical arrival of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" with a slew of Potter-themed features, photo and video retrospectives, clips, polls, cast interviews, behind-the-scenes peeks and more. If you want it, MTV will have it. And if we don't, tell us what we're missing in the comments and we'll see what we can do.
To kick things off, we'd like you, the fans, to send in any questions you may have for "Potter" stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton, as well as director David Yates. You see, MTV's Josh Horowitz is hopping a flight to London (baby!) later this week to chat with the cast, and would love nothing more than to ask Potter, Hermione, Ron, Malfoy and Yates, the man who's bringing "Deathly Hallows" to the screen, a few queries from bona fide fans. It's not every day audiences get to see Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Hilary Swank acting opposite Ashton Kutcher, Abigail Breslin and Lea Michele. But that's exactly what's likely to happen in "New Year's Eve." Gary Marshall's thematic follow-up to this year's "Valentine's Day" has plans to blow the previous film's ridiculous number of stars out of the water, and is already well on its way to doing so.
Breslin and Michele have already been announced, but today The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that De Niro, Pfeiffer, Swank and Kutcher are in negotiations for roles as well. And you can toss Hector Elizondo into the mix, too, because Marshall previously told MTV that the "Pretty Woman" actor "has to be in all my movies." Read more...
