All this news about "Top Gun 2" has me seeing flashbacks of my 6-year-old tomboy self -- obsessed with fighter pilots and Kenny Loggins' soundtrack, and not yet understanding all the fuss about that volleyball scene. The mature me can't help but raise a brow at revisiting such a classic tale. However! Because director Tony Scott has been making the publicity rounds for his new film "Unstoppable," we've been able to glean a few key details from him about the project.
First and foremost, Scott recently told MTV Radio's Senior Producer Jeff Cornell that "Top Gun 2" will NOT be a sequel.
"It's not even a reinvention, it's not even a sequel. It's a re-thinking," Scott said. "What inspired me is that the world today is great, it's so different from the world we touched originally. It's really run by guys sitting in Nevada on computers playing war games," he said.
Scott went on to say that the film will focus on the new generation of fighter pilots. "It's a mixture of that, and it's the end of the generation of fighter pilots. Not in a complete end to the generation, because these guys they go up in F-35s and they carry 10 drones with them. [But] it's a very different movie," he said.
So the big question: Has he secured Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer to reprise their famous roles as Maverick and Iceman?
"I'm gonna withhold that information," Scott told MTV News at the "Unstoppable" premiere. "I can't say anything. I'm talking with Jerry [Bruckheimer], and I'm going to withhold [those other details].”
Translation: Tom and Val will TOTALLY be in the movie.
