Not one to be satisfied with greatness, rapper Kanye West decided instead to aim for something truly extraordinary with the music video for his song "Runaway." The result is an exceedingly ambitious 40-minute film that has already wowed audiences at screenings in London, Los Angeles and most recently New York, garnering comparisons to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and Prince's "Under the Cherry Moon."
Tonight (Saturday, October 23) at 8 p.m. ET the film will finally reach a wide audience when it debuts simultaneously on MTV, MTV2 and BET, and streams live on MTV.com, BET.com and VH1.com, followed by a live Q&A session on MTV and MTV.com.
"Runway" tells the story of a phoenix (played by model Selita Ebanks, rumored to be West's real-life leading lady) who falls to Earth and is saved by Griffin (a.k.a. Kanye) but later bursts into flames when she's ridiculed by petty humans.
"[It's] the new 'Thriller' in my opinion," said Rahim Wright after seeing the film at its NYC premiere. "And people are going to have to battle with that, but you're going to have to figure Kanye out. You can't just take it at face value and think that you know what he's talking about."
For his part, Kanye can't wait for people to see his handiwork. As he told MTV News at the New York screening: "This is the biggest premiere so far, and the last one — and the closest one — to when it's actually going to premiere on TV... so I'm just really excited."
