Let's get one thing straight: machetes are awesome. So awesome, in fact, that the oversized jungle-cutting blade is getting the spotlight in its very own Danny Trejo-starring movie, "Machete," out in theaters nationwide today.
But "Machete" isn't the first time that machetes have had a prominent role in the world of film — far from it, in fact. After the jump, check out a list of some of our favorite machetes in modern cinema! Read more...

MTV's Fall Preview week of exclusives continues today with a look at the hottest upcoming movies of the next four months. We know what you should see and why you should see it, and we've got it all right here. Keep it locked to MTV News and MTV Movies Blog for continued updates throughout the week!
What's It Called: "Megamind"
What It's About: An alien super-villain manages to finally kill off his superhero arch-nemesis... only to discover that his life no longer has any purpose. In his depression he creates a new hero for him to match wits against... only the newcomer decides to use his powers for evil, thus forcing our downtrodden super-villain to protect the people he once sought to dominate.
Who's In It: Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Tina Fey, David Cross, Justin Long. Directed by Tom McGrath.
Why You Should Care: Honestly, the year has been pretty crowded with first-class animated films, to the point that this is the second one in 2010 to feature a super-villain who is forced to turn over a new leaf. That being said, "Megamind" features a dynamite cast and a cool story of its own. Day one ticket purchase right here.

News broke last month that Todd Phillips was developing a John Belushi biopic — the latest in a long string of efforts to thrust the "Saturday Night Live" funnyman's life in front of the camera — and the "Hangover" director was anything but pleased.
"That's something that gets released by some agent of somebody and then you get asked questions about it," Phillips told MTV News, in what we believe are his first public comments about the project. "It's in its very nascent stages." But ever the good sport, Phillips expanded on what has been reported in the trades. Read more...

What's It Called: "Gulliver's Travels"
What It's About: A travel writer gets an assignment in the Bermuda Triangle. As you might expect, things go awry and the poor guy ends up washed ashore on an island populated by little people. Very little, like a couple of inches tall little.
Who's In It: Jack Black, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Catherine Tate, Billy Connolly. Directed by Rob Letterman.
Why You Should Care: It's a classic children's tale upgraded with modern-day ideas and starring Jack Black. Also, the always excellent Nick Stoller co-wrote it.

"Devil" is the first movie in a planned trilogy for M. Night Shyamalan, who will be serving as producer for the three films. The second movie in the series has already had some confirmed news: Chris Sparling, the writer of "Buried," is developing a script. There have also been some indications that Shyamalan has found his director for the second movie, "The Last Exorcism" helmer Daniel Stamm.
Let's review the facts, starting with what Shyamalan told MTV's Josh Horowitz during a recent interview.
"I'm thinking about what the title should be and we're just now... closing a deal with a director," he said. "I'll give you a hint: his movie is coming out very soon. I'm very, very excited because I loved his movie as well and he's a whole different style of filmmaker. That's what's so exciting for me, I get to hear through somebody's eyes how they would have interpreted the story that I came up with. It's basically 'Twelve Angry Men' but they're deliberating over a supernatural trial."
Okay, stop. Let's review. Read more...

Around this time last year we were all getting excited about this little low-budget horror/thriller "Paranormal Activity," by a then-unknown filmmaker by the name of Oren Peli. The movie arrived and it made ridiculous amounts of money which, coupled with the tiny budget, quickly turned it into the most profitable movie of all time.
Peli star has been on the rise since then. He's producing a sequel to "Paranormal," which arrives in theaters just before Halloween this year. He's working on another sort of "found footage" film, this one apparently involving aliens, called "Area 51." And now he's got a TV series in the works. Deadline reports that ABC has picked up a pilot for "The River," which is described as "cinema verite-style thriller drama in the vein of 'Paranormal Activity' set on a mysterious river." I'll be curious to see how a couple's self-filmed struggles with an unfriendly demon compares to a river thriller, but Peli is definitely the right guy for a verite-style treatment of the supernatural.

One of the movies I'm most looking forward to seeing this month is director David Fincher's Facebook biopic "The Social Network." Yes, it's out in theaters on October 1, but the film will actually premiere on September 24 at the New York Film Festival. Jesse Eisenberg stars as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in what amounts to a pretty wild tale. MTV's Eric Ditzian recently spoke to the young star on the set of "30 Minutes or Less" and he gave much of the credit for what people will see come 10/1 to his director.
"One of the interesting aspects of my character was disengagement, so the character is kind of a little aloof and emotionally, really quite reserved," Eisenberg said. "For my collaboration with the director on that movie, we would be often doing half the scene 60 times one way, then 60 times a little more engaged." Read more...

Today is the last day in MTV's Fall Preview week, and here's one last exclusive clip for your viewing enjoyment. "It's A Funny Kind of Story" is the latest from the "Half Nelson" writer/director team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. It's an ensemble comedy about a clinically depressed teen who decides to have himself committed. There's a great cast here: Keir Gilchrist, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Lauren Graham, Zoe Kravitz, Aasif Mandvi, Jim Gaffigan... lots of folks. In the clip below, Gilchrist and Kravitz share a tender, awkward moment.
Catch "It's A Funny Kind of Story" in theaters on October 8.

The fourth "Mission: Impossible" movie -- which will not be called "Mission: Impossible 4" -- has been building more and more momentum over the past few months. Tom Cruise is coming back as Ethan Hunt. J.J. Abrams is producing. Pixar vet Brad Bird is directing and Jeremy Renner has been confirmed as a new young agent and potential future torch-bearer for the series.
Now its been confirmed that Paula Patton will join the cast as well, as the female lead. The report, which surfaced on Wednesday night from Deadline, reveals that the "Precious" star will play a young operative who works with Cruise's IMF agent. They also mention that Abrams and Cruise have "always" considered the forthcoming movie to be a franchise reboot, which I don't recall reading before. Patton beat our Kristen Kreuk and and Lauren German for the role.

It's been awhile since I last had a Miley Cyrus edition of Daily TwitPic for you. The pop star made the (probably wise) decision to sign herself off of the microblogging service for good, thus ending a regular flow of updates from the world of Hannah Montana's real-life counterpart.
Lucky for you fans, Cyrus is shooting a movie right now with someone who does use Twitter pretty regularly. She joins Demi Moore in the upcoming remake of the 2008 French film "LOL: Laughing Out Loud." In today's TwitPic, Cyrus and Moore smile for a photo op during what appears to be a night off with "LOL" writer/director Lisa Azuelos and her daughter. The movie is supposed to hit theaters sometime next year. Read more...
