With Labor Day safely behind us, weekly movie releases can now officially be considered as part of the fall slate. Yes, yes... fall technically starts on September 22. Screw that noise though. Summer blockbusters are done. So begins the race for the Golden Globes, the Academy Awards and all of the other many prestigious awards that will be handed out in the coming months.

What are you most looking forward to seeing? "TRON: Legacy"? "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"? "The Social Network"? Please let us know. I'm going to use this opportunity to run through 10 upcoming fall releases that don't necessarily number among the major tentpoles. Even if you've heard of them, these (mostly) smaller-scale productions are worthy of your attention in the coming months. Read more...

Two things define Matt Reeves' "Let Me In," his remake of the character-driven Swedish horror flick "Let the Right One In": an '80s setting and an atypical human/vampire relationship between two children (though technically, one of them only looks like a child). That's what I get from this new clip; lucky Toronto International Film Festival goers will get to find out in a few days exactly what Reeves cooked up for his remake; the rest of us will be left waiting for the October 1 release. But at least you can get a taste now...

The Internet is buzzing this morning with the news that Natalie Portman was offered the starring role in "Gravity," the upcoming sci-fi drama from Alfonso Cuaron which was originally set to star Angelina Jolie alongside Robert Downey Jr. But there's another bit of tantalizing information buried deep in the original story from The Hollywood Reporter.

Portman is also being courted by "Robin Hood" director Terrence Malick, who is developing some sort of project focused on "Great Balls of Fire" singer Jerry Lee Lewis. He is putting that one together with Brad Pitt, who I guess would also be top choice for the starring role? I haven't heard anything about that one before, but Malick wouldn't be the first to chart Lewis' life. The 1989 biopic "Great Balls of Fire" starred Dennis Quaid as the popular singer. Portman would presumably one of Lewis' six wives, depending on which part of his life the focus is on. The previous biopic was based on a book by his third wife, Myra Gale Brown, also his first cousin.

I was out in New York City seeing "The Tingler" (which was amazing), but Labor Day's TV lineup was marked by a most excellent "Star Wars" marathon on Spike. This inspired the Internet, in its infinite wisdom, to dig up a pretty amazing vintage interview with Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford.

The clip comes from a 1977 chat with Bobbie Wygant for a Dallas-Fort Worth news program. This is before Ford and the rest of the "Star Wars" folk found major fame from the sci-fi series. The actor even admits that he's not a fan of the genre, having had no experience with "Buck Rogers" or "Flash Gordon." It in many ways resembles more recent interviews with Ford about "Star Wars"; he just doesn't want to talk about it anymore. I don't blame him-- between Han Solo and Indiana Jones, it can be said without hyperbole that this guy is responsible for two of the most iconic roguish characters in film history. Thanks to the The New York Times for pointing this one out.

One of the bits of news buzzing this week concerns "The Disappearance of Alice Creed" star Gemma Arterton. UK outlet The Sunday Times reported yesterday (via Blastr) that she is scheduled to meet with "Alien" prequel director Ridley Scott about possibly taking a starring role in the two films.

I hate to be that guy who ruins the party, but it turns out that this isn't the case. MTV put in a call to Arterton's publicist, who quickly confirmed: "There's no truth to that." It would have actually been an inspired bit of casting; Arterton proved in "Creed" and "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" that she's a tough cookie. I would definitely buy her taking on -- and kicking the asses of -- Xenomorphs.

In related, but unconnected, news, Scott spoke with The Independent last Friday about his prequel plans. "The film will be really tough, really nasty," he said. "It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?"

Would you be able to maintain your civility if you were trapped in an elevator with a group of strangers? How about if weird, possibly supernatural, things started happening? Maybe someone gets bitten in the dark by an unseen being?

That's the dilemma the stars of "Devil" face in the clip below, as it becomes increasingly clear that there's something not entirely human with them in the cramped space. The movie is the first chapter in producer M. Night Shyamalan's so-called "Night Chronicles" trilogy, written by Brian Nelson and directed by brothers Drew and John Erick Dowdle.

Wil Wheaton summed up the reactions of gamers everywhere today when 2K Games revealed at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle that a playable version of the epically delayed game "Duke Nukem Forever" would be playable for the show.

Others in Twitter-Wood were more concerned with movies, which is appropriate since that's where they make their money. Kristen Bell has been prodding at her followers to tell Warner Bros. they want to see a "Veronica Mars" movie, Ashton Kutcher checked out the "Family Guy" take on "Return of the Jedi," and Rainn Wilson discussed a remake of "The Rocker." Check out what he'd like to do with that down below and see who's going to a midnight screening of "Machete."

Find out what they jumped on after the break. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is Twitter-Wood for September 3, 2010. Read more...
