Are you wondering what's been going on with "The Hobbit" ever since Guillermo del Toro removed himself from the director role to focus on other (admittedly awesome) projects? I am too. And it seems we'll all be finding out soon.

"Lord of the Rings" trilogy architect Peter Jackson, speaking to New Zealand outlet The Dominion Post (via blastr), said that Warner Bros is "making progress untangling the MGM situation, so we should have certainty with 'The Hobbit' sometime soon." There's little more revealed than that -- remember, Jackson is still weighing whether he can/will direct or if they'll get someone else to replace del Toro -- but a promise from the one true ring-bearer that news is coming "soon" certainly fills this fan with hope.

Two new clips for "Resident Evil: Afterlife" are online, bringing three times the Milla Jovovich action. How could there be three times the Milla in just two clips, you ask? Well this first one, a UGO exclusive, impossibly features TWO Millas! Hotness squared.

After the jump is another new clip, from Yahoo! Movies. Ever wonder how difficult it might be to land a plane on the roof of a building? Well wonder no more... Read more...

For any child of the '80s, "Back to the Future" was a cultural cornerstone in our movie-going development. Few films deliver the excitement, the electricity that Robert Zemeckis' century-spanning magnum opus delivers across its three films. And now it's headed to Blu-ray on October 26, tied to the franchise's 25th anniversary.

We already ran down the collection's bevy of special features, and now Universal has released a brand new trailer to give fans an extra shot of anticipation. Check it out below and don't forget to check back here in October for our first look at the box set.

You've seen me talk about "Star Wars Uncut" here. It's an awesome mashup of fanmade videos which, edited together, recreate the very first "Star Wars" movie as a sort of amateur filmmaker-driven video collage. Each segment is 15 seconds long, which results in a very bizarre viewing experience. Casey Pugh, one of the Emmy-winning project's creators, has posted a four-and-a-half minute teaser online. It's awesome. Thanks to FilmDrunk for pointing this one out.

Okay, so while yesterday's Miss Universe 2010 list was a popular one, it wasn't necessarily accurate to actual science fiction sexiness. After all, the Queen Alien won first place — and now that we've successfully hired Sigourney Weaver to properly dispose of that acid-dripping menace, we can talk about the actual hotness.

So, while many of the women referenced in yesterday's list absolutely qualify as sexy sci-fi characters, there are many other women — human women, to be precise — that deserve a place in the Miss Universe 2010 competition.

After the jump, check out five late (human) entries to Miss Universe 2010! And click the image up top to check out our gallery of Miss Sci-Fi Universe 2010 hotties! Read more...

In "Scream," we learned the rules for horror movies. "Scream 2" tackled the rules for horror movie sequels, while "Scream 3" capped it off by exploring the rules of horror trilogies. Following that trend, what's the mission statement for "Scream 4," the currently shooting revamp of Wes Craven's horror franchise?

As filming trucks along and casting reports continue to circulate — including word that Kristen Bell and Anna Paquin are joining the movie — we're wondering what sort of rules "Scream 4" might explore. Wonder along with us after the jump! Read more...

Sometimes we post clips on MTV Movies Blog that really require some explanation. Other times, the clip itself is all the explanation you really need. We're in the latter scenario right now: Robert De Niro, Danny Trejo, Jeff Fahey and a very large gun in a clip from "Machete," directed by Robert Rodriguez. It's out in theaters on September 3, which really isn't soon enough as far as I'm concerned.

I'm very pleased to share with you the first of three guest blogs coming this week in support of "The Last Exorcism," which hits theaters this Friday. In today's post, producer Eli Roth charts the development of the film, from his signing on as a producer to its eventual pickup by Lionsgate. Look out for another blog tomorrow from director Daniel Stamm and a second one from Eli on Friday, to go along with our planned Twitterview that day, which starts at 11:30am eastern. And that's that. Take it away, Eli!

I've always loved exorcism movies, ever since "The Exorcist" traumatized me at the ripe age of 6. I saw that film and literally could not fall asleep for two years without believing the devil was going to possess me. My parents would argue that we were Jewish and that we didn't believe in that stuff, but I was certain I would be the first test case. My father's a psychiatrist/psychoanalyst and a professor at the Harvard Medical school, so any kind of altered personality was always approached from a psychiatric point of view in my home. Perhaps that's the very thing that intrigued me about possession: the thought that maybe he's wrong, and that another spirit can literally enter your body and take you over. And what if that spirit was none other than the devil himself? Read more...

It's been public knowledge for some time that while Barbra Streisand will be reprising her role as mother Focker in "Meet the Parents: Little Fockers," Dustin Hoffman was a no-go for father Focker. It seems that is no longer the case. Deadline reveals that the Ben Stiller/Robert De Niro-starring December comedy came in under budget, and thus director Jay Roach & writer John Hamburg were able to convince Hoffman to come in for a role which is, according to an unnamed insider, "not dissimilar to what we were pitching him in the beginning."

Money was reported to be one of the reasons Hoffman wasn't returning, but the same insider says that coming in under budget was a big help in securing him. "It's costing what we were going to pay him in the first place." Hoffman will be on-hand to shoot a number of pickup scenes next month with Barbra Streisand and Ben Stiller. It is also confirmed that he'll factor into the film's climactic final scene, featuring the entire main cast.

Blah blah blah James Cameron. Blah blah blah "Avatar" sequel. The first movie is literally top of the world in terms of box office sales. Cameron has a larger story in mind, a trilogy even. We'll be heading back to Pandora at some point. The question is, when? Not immediately, Cameron told MTV's Kara Warner in a recent interview.

As a director, Cameron tends to work in spurts. And with an "Avatar" sequel not yet in production, Kara asked if we might see one of his other long-gestating projects, manga adaptation "Battle Angel Alita" or underwater drama "The Dive," arrive first.

"Well they're both possible projects and I'm sort of weighing this constellation of really cool things that I want to do," he said. I do want to do another 'Avatar' film, probably two, and I'm talking to Fox about that right now." Read more...
