While we still aren't sure what role Rihanna will play in board game adaptation "Battleship" (I hope, for her sake, she gets to get it on with either Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgard... or both), we imagine she will bring her own flare for theatrics to the role. The thing about her casting is that it has us wondering what pop stars would do well in other planned movie adaptations of board games. Read more...

For awhile now, there have been a couple of competing "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" adaptations on the docket. There's one belonging to Disney had McG attached to direct at one point, but it was put on indefinite hold. Then David Fincher stepped in following Dick Cook's Disney departure, with plans to direct the film based on a script from Scott Z. Burns. Fincher spoke to MTV's Josh Horowitz at San Diego Comic-Con and he confirmed, in his typically verbose fashion, that things are continuing to move forward.
"We're workin'!" Stop David... just stop. I can't transcribe that quickly! Still, considering that the initial report on Disney's "20,000 Leagues" project indicated that no deals had been made with Fincher, it's something to at least hear that he is working on it. Read more...
Steve Carell is having a strong summer, huh? There was "Date Night" and "Despicable Me" and now this weekend's latest comedy, "Dinner for Schmucks." He may be busy promoting all of that, but that's not stopping the funnyman from setting up what's next.
And what's next is apparently "Raised By Wolfs," from "In Living Color" and "The Drew Carey Show" writer/producer Les Firestein. No director yet, nor even a basic plot synopsis, but Carell will star and produce, The Hollywood Reporter reveals. The "Wolfs" referenced in the title is apparently a reference to a main character's last night. I would much prefer to envision "Raised By Wolfs" as a remake/reboot/inspired by retelling of "Walk Like A Man," the awesome '80s comedy starring Howie Mandel (shut up-- it IS awesome) as a guy who is raised in the wild by a pack of wolves. Hilarity ensues when attempts are made to integrate him back into society. I want to see Carell do THAT.

In the weeks prior, Guillermo del Toro had promised a big announcement for San Diego Comic-Con. He didn't disappoint: "Haunted Mansion" is getting a remake, and it's going to be del Toro-ified. Still, the guy has a ton of other projects that fans are curious about. MTV's Josh Horowitz asked him about two in particular when they sat down for a chat during the 'Con: "Frankenstein" and "Van Helsing."
"Frankenstein-- in the next few weeks we are doing a very, very thorough makeup test on Doug Jones. And we're gonna film it," del Toro said. Jones, of course, is the longtime collaborator who is perhaps best known for wearing the Abe Sapien suit in "Hellboy" and the Pale Man & Pan suits in "Pan's Labyrinth." Read more...

Shooting for "Transformers 3" is well underway in Chicago right now. The movie isn't out until next July, but it takes awhile to digitally create those massive robot aliens and stick them into the movie.
You know how it is with director Michael Bay: wherever he goes, a warzone soon follows. Such is the case with this footage from the Chicago shoot, which you can find after the jump. I have no idea what's going on in this scene, but I'd wager it has something to do with Decepticons tearing ass across the city. When will those puny humans learn that their tiny bullets have no effect on Transformers. It sure isn't going to be this movie, as the set footage illustrates.
Also-- Megan Fox replacement Rosie Huntington-Whiteley... do you think her hair naturally billows like that? Or are they just pointing a fan at her? Read more...

"Sucker Punch" director Zack Snyder has joined Twitter. I wonder if he's really ready for the fanperson squees that await him with each new trailer release. He can't be. No one is.
Snyder's Twitter timing was fortuitous, as his daughter recently celebrated her birthday and she had one helluva cake to celebrate with. A cake that we're preserving for posterity in today's Daily TwitPic. You've got Yoda, ancient Jedi Master of the "Star Wars" series, with lightsaber in hand riding on the back of a unicorn. The only thing crazier than that would be Chewbacca riding a giant squirrel and fighting Nazis... but that would never happen, right?
The Yoda-corn cake is a sight to behold. Hit the jump to see it for yourself. Read more...

When David Fincher stopped by to talk to MTV News at San Diego Comic-Con about his upcoming animated feature "The Goon," we had to ask about his plans for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." Living up to his notoriously press-shy, short answer prone persona, Fincher didn't reveal too many details about his film version of Stieg Larsson's international best-selling crime thriller, just that it will stick to the book's setting, Sweden.
"Stockholm. Uppsala. In the north," he said of the film's planned location. "You have to. What, are you going to put it in Seattle?" Laughter. "Seattle noir," he joked. Read more...

Angelina Jolie may have secured a Twitter account, but she's locked it down and doesn't appear to have any plans to tweet anytime soon. That may come as a disappointment to Conan O'Brien, who noted the development today. Elsewhere, Jolie's new movie "Salt" just made Bret Easton Ellis space out and contemplate "powerful movies."
Twitter-Wood posts unrelated to Angelina Jolie over the last 24 hours included a shared moment between Kal Penn and Olivia Wilde that seems to have involved a gold cart and "House M.D.," as well as a Chatroulette prediction from Stephen Colbert and birthday cake for Zack Snyder's daughter that Star Wars fans should enjoy.

If you think that Guillermo Del Toro's decision to direct "The Haunted Mansion" is an unexpected and curious one, well, think again. Speaking with MTV News, the "Pan's Labyrinth" filmmaker — formerly attached to "The Hobbit," now making his Disney with a reboot of "The Haunted Mansion" — is a longtime fanatic and collector of memorabilia from the classic Disney ride.
"For some people, it's just a ride. For others like me, it's a way of life," Del Toro told MTV in an exclusive interview at Comic-Con. "We're really serious fanatics. I'm a big, big collector of it. I've been collecting not only memorabilia, but also original artifacts from the mansion for the last ten years."
With a massive collection including original Marc Davis art, statues, wallpaper and a secret collector's room accessible only by way of a secret bookshelf, Del Toro is clearly a big fan of "The Haunted Mansion" — so much so that he's drawing on his intimate knowledge of the theme park ride's history for the film's story. "Avatar" lead Sam Worthington's star is shining mighty bright these days, which might explain why he's backed away from the upcoming McG-directed action/comedy "This Means War." Now a replacement has been put in place, and while he doesn't quite have Worthington's street cred YET, he soon will: Tom Hardy. After his 2009 "Bronson" breakout, Hardy has had a lot of upward momentum; he delivers one of the standout performances in Chris Nolan's summer hit "Inception" and he'll also be starring in the long-awaited "Mad Max" sequel/reboot, "Fury Road."
Now he's taking over for Worthington in "This Means War," which follows a pair of spies -- Hardy and "Star Trek" lead Chris Pine -- competing for the love of one young woman. Reese Witherspoon is set for the lead female role; she's also producing with Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment. This is a project that's been percolating for almost a decade; Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence were once attached to star. Perhaps now things will get going, since Hardy is sitting tight with the "Mad Max" production delay.
