You know that "Alien" prequel that Ridley Scott intends to direct? Well if it's possible, things just got even more interesting on that front. Deadline reported late yesterday that "Lost" writer and showrunner Damon Lindelof met with Scott and Fox execs about giving the script a rewrite. Lindelof, who considers the seminal sci-fi work one of his great inspirations, jumped at the opportunity. Sending certain members of the "Star Trek" fan community into a rage, as Lindelof is presumably busy right now working with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman on the "Trek" sequel.

That's not all. In an interesting twist, Lindelof's meeting with Fox yielded some ideas that may spin off into their own "free standing science fiction film." Whether that would be in addition to the "Alien" rewrite or instead isn't entirely clear. But it's a big development for a project that people were already watching very closely; Scott and Lindelof together though? That's about as unlikely -- and awesome -- a pairing as Guillermo del Toro and James Cameron!

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has been trying to make an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's celebrated novella "At the Mountains of Madness" happen for some years now. We learned late yesterday that it's finally going to happen, in 3-D and with James Cameron producing no less. The Internet is in danger of collapsing beneath the weight of the Awesome in that sentence.

As great as the Cameron/3-D bits are, for me the excitement begins and ends with the pairing of del Toro and Lovecraft. The late horror author always provides a challenging, rewarding read, and "At the Mountains of Madness" is one of his standout works. Del Toro's unique artistic vision falls perfectly in line with Lovecraft's, whose work is marked by career-spanning themes of madness and the dangers of the unknown. It is a credit to Lovecraft's talent that his work has largely defied big screen adaptations -- the writing is, simply, very dense -- and it is equally a credit to del Toro's abilities that he's cracked the story in a way that he feels confident about.

If you're not familiar with Lovecraft's work then you might be curious to know exactly why forward movement on "At the Mountains of Madness" is so exciting. That's why I'm here now, as you'll learn after the jump. Read More...

Here's a pretty perfect bit of casting. Russell Brand is going to star in "Hawkwood," an action/comedy about real-life 14th century mercenary John Hawkwood. You know how Brand is frequently compared with or considered to be a real-life version of Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow character from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies? Well "Hawkwood" will give him a chance to try that role on for real.

The title character is a swashbuckling rogue, which is sort of how I envision Brand in his day-to-day life. Maybe without the sword. Deadline reports that he'll produce "Hawkwood" with Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark and Nicky Weinstock. No director has been announced, but Jared Stern will write the script. Stern recently did some work on the script for the "Arthur" remake, featuring Brand in the starring role made famous Dudley Moore. With no script written and many of the players still to be maneuvered into place, don't expect to see "Hawkwood" anytime soon. Before long though, we'll all get to see Brand do his best Jack Sparrow impression. And really, there's nothing that sucks about that.

Although he'd been dormant since his 2007 appearance in "Tropic Thunder," the abrasive, overbearing mega-producer Les Grossman is back in a big way thank to his appearance at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards. And he's pals with Tom Cruise, so that helps. It was learned shortly after the Movie Awards that Grossman made such a splash he's getting his very own movie. MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke to "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World" actor Bill Hader at San Diego Comic-Con last week -- Hader has a part-time gig as Grossman's assistant -- and he was more than happy to share an update on the status of the planned comedy.

"As I know right now, Mike Bacall, who co-wrote 'Scott Pilgrim,' is working on a script for a Les Grossman movie," he said. "I actually just saw [Bacall] last night and he was like, 'I've been writing for you!' We'll see if anything happens with that, but that would be a lot of fun." Read More...

The first trailer for "Yogi Bear" is officially online. My world isn't shaken by what we're seeing here, but I'm not 8 years old. I'm sure it's going to be a saccharine good time. Stars Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake do a great job with the voices of Yogi and Boo-Boo, respectively; a crucial component in making a Yogi Bear movie work. The live action cast is solid too, highlighted by Anna Faris and Tom Cavanagh. It just feels like this was made more with an eye towards bringing in a whole new Yogi audience; that's fine and not entirely unexpected... but what about all of those older fans?

As long as it's not "Garfield"...

Soon, very soon now, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will be leaving office. He won't be able to run again either, thanks to term limits. And since a run for the White House is out of the question for the non-U.S. born politician, many believe that good, old Ahnuld will once again pursue the work that he will always be best-known for: acting.

He's certainly been leaning in that direction. He did a couple of cameos during his first days in office, in the (underrated!) Dwayne Johnson action/comedy "The Rundown" and the Jackie Chan-starring remake of "Around the World in 80 Days." More recently he lent his likeness to "Terminator Salvation," an '80s-era digital recreation of his character from "The Terminator." And this summer he has a full-blown scene in "The Expendables," with Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone.

The latest hint that Ahnuld will soon return to the big screen comes in the form of a photo op, today's Daily TwitPic. Schwarzenegger eased himself behind the handlebars of the same motorcycle that he rode in "The Terminator," part of a Reagan Library exhibition. He doesn't look quite as badass anymore, but a leather jacket and sunglasses would fix that right up. Read More...

Deadline reports that Guillermo del Toro will direct "At The Mountains of Madness" as his next feature film, with James Cameron (!) serving as producer. The Cameron producing part is a surprise for sure, but thanks to a few hints and re-write updates from del Toro himself during MTV's exclusive interview below, filmed at Comic-Con, we were pretty sure that his next project would be the long-talked-about H.P. Lovecraft adaptation.

“We are rewriting slightly the screenplay we’ve had for 12 years,” del Toro said. “There [are] movies that have come out that have done things that are similar to some of the stuff we were trying," he said. Read More...

Diablo Cody has been tweeting messages and pictures from her first nine months of motherhood, so it was no surprise that all of Twitter-Wood got to enjoy an official announcement yesterday that her son Marcello Daniel Maurio has arrived.

It was a busy night in tweets, though, as "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" took over Grauman's Chinese Theatre for its premiere in Los Angeles. Edgar Wright and his cast attended, as did Nick Frost and Jennette McCurdy, according to their notes. Check out what they thought and what Rainn Wilson had to say about his experience with WikiLeaks after the jump.

I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is Twitter-Wood for July 28, 2010. Read More...

The movie isn't out until February 2011, but "I Am Number Four" the book hits stores next week on August 3. I read it several weeks ago and can't recommend it highly enough; it's an easy, fun sci-fi read, one that can be enjoyed equally by teens and adults.

The story follows a young human-like alien from the planet Lorien, which was destroyed some years ago the Mogadorians, by a marauding race of invaders. Lorien's last hope lies with nine babies who are sent to go into hiding on the planet Earth. Each one is assigned a guardian/teacher and each will develop a range of superhuman powers as they advance into their adult years. As an added twist, each of the nine is assigned a number; the Mogadorians can hunt them all down, but the surviving Lorien children can only be killed in the order of their numbers.

That's the basic setup. "Disturbia" director D.J. Caruso is busy shooting the adaptation right now in Pittsburgh, along with stars Alex Pettyfer as the titular Number Four, Timothy Olyphant as the boy's guardian, Teresa Palmer as fellow alien refugee Number Six and "Glee" star Dianna Agron as high school sweetheart Sarah. Amidst a busy shooting schedule, Caruso took some time out to chat exclusively with MTV about how things are coming along. Read More...

"Clash of the Titans" star Gemma Aterton is as eager as the film's fans to find out concrete details about the planned sequel. When MTV caught up with the actor during a press day for "The Disappearance of Alice Creed," out next Friday, she didn't have any specific news to reveal, only that she thinks she'll be back for the second film.

"I think I am doing the second 'Clash,'" Arterton said. "I don't know anything about it yet though. It's one of those things." When asked whether she is signed on to reprise the role of river goddess Io officially, Arterton said her contract for the original film included the option of signing her to future chapters of "Clash."
