The Fourth of July is in full effect with families across the country grilling feasts and watching fireworks, but it seems that many Americans are headed to movie theaters, as this weekend proved a very lucrative one for multiple films including new releases "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" and "The Last Airbender."
"Eclipse" took first place with $69 million, an impressive result that shows that "Twilight" fans' support for Team Edward, Team Jacob and all the supernatural suitors in between transcends the need to devote the weekend to America's patriotic holiday. At this point, "Eclipse" has earned $161 million since opening on Wednesday, almost a full $100 million past its production budget — and that's not even factoring in the film's performance in foreign territories. Even though "Eclipse" isn't likely to hit $200 million by the end of the holiday weekend on Monday, its final opening weekend tally will be quite rewarding nonetheless.
Coming in second place is "The Last Airbender," M. Night Shyamalan's adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon series. Despite mostly negative reviews, Shyamalan's latest has earned a solid $40.7 million this weekend, resulting in a $57 million total since opening on Thursday.
"Toy Story 3" came in third place with $30.2 million, bringing Pixar's latest to a walloping $289 million. "Grown Ups" and "Knight and Day" stayed in fourth and fifth place with $18.5 million and $10.2 million for the weekend.
Check back tomorrow for the holiday weekend's final tally!
