There was a time awhile back when "Knight and Day" director James Mangold was rumored to be in the running for the job of directing "Breaking Dawn," a gig that has since gone to Bill Condon. MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke with Mangold recently about this week's Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz-starring action-comedy, and he managed to squeeze in a question about what happened there with those "Breaking Dawn" rumors.

"I guess they must have been seriously considering it, but I don't know how I got into that," Mangold said with amusement. "A lot of times in the trades what happens is people... they think you'd be good for something, so they actually tell the reporter that you'd be good for it. And somehow that evolves into you doing it." That said, the director has nothing at all against Stephenie Meyer's uber-popular vampire series. Read More...

The HobbitWhen Guillermo Del Toro announced his departure from "The Hobbit" late last month, many fans immediately began hoping that producer and "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson would step up to the plate and get behind the camera for the latest J.R.R. Tolkien film epic. Now — fingers crossed — it seems that those fans are getting their wish.

Mike Fleming at Deadline cites anonymous but "trusted" sources who say that Peter Jackson will direct the two-part "The Hobbit" feature for Warner Bros., New Line and MGM, with his deal currently in negotiations. A case is allegedly being made to the financially troubled MGM "to loosen the purse strings and make the movies happen." If the deal goes through, Jackson would shoot both "Hobbit" films back-to-back in New Zealand. Read More...

The sixth season of "Futurama" premiered last night, and there was much rejoicing. The Planet Express crew is back and it's like they never left. There are 26 new episodes in all, and Comedy Central plans to roll out 13 this year and 13 in 2011. I'm not sure if it's going to be referred to as two seasons or two halves of the same season, but it doesn't matter. 26 episodes. 12 air this summer. One more airs in December, a special holiday episode. And then 13 more next year.

Rabid fans are of course dying to know what's coming. And I'm pleased to report that I've got some answers. Series creator David X. Cohen, Fry (among others) voice actor Billy West and Kif Kroker (among others) voice actor Maurice LaMarche all took some time out of their busy schedules to chat with MTV recently. They wouldn't give up all of the goods, but I managed to glean a pretty good idea of what we can expect from this just-premiered season. Read More...

"The Extra Man" premieres today on just about any digital delivery service you can think of: On Demand, Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, VUDU, DirectTV, the Dish Network and Amazon. It also opens in theaters on July 30, for those who prefer the big screen experience. You can catch a snippet of it now, right here on MTV Movies Blog. The film is based on Jonathan Ames' book about a young writer (Paul Dano) who learns from a failed playwright (Kevin Kline) the art of escorting wealthy older women.

The clip below occurs early in young Louis's adventures, as he's getting what appears to be his first job in New York. We also see his first encounter with the movie's love interest, played by Katie Holmes. Looks like fun, and Kevin Kline is always a winner.

Now TMZ doesn't typically tread in straightforward movie news waters, so take this anonymously sourced news with a shaker full of salt. That said, the word is that Sylvester Stallone, who is gearing up to release "The Expendables" at the end of this summer, has been having talks with John Gotti Jr. Apparently, Stallone would like to do a biopic about Gotti's father, the late Gambino mob boss who died in prison in 2002. The story would stem from the junior Gotti's recollections of his father and their troubled relationship. Stallone would presumably star and TMZ reports that things have progressed far enough for him to be considering a screenwriter. What do you make of this news?

I think we can all agree that Tom Cruise has had a bit of a PR problem in recent years. There's no need to rehash the details. There's a world wide web of information out there for you to look it up on your own. I'll admit too, I was one of the people who veered away from him after the... unpleasantness. I love "Top Gun," "Risky Business," the "Mission: Impossible" movies, "The Firm"... any number of his films. But it was time for a break.

Now we have "Knight and Day," an action-comedy that's out this week starring Cruise and Cameron Diaz as an unlikely spy duo. Really, Cruise is the spy and Diaz is the sweet, blissfully ignorant woman who is inadvertently drawn into a high-stakes world. I saw the movie late last week and I have to say... I really, really enjoyed it. Cruise and Diaz have good chemistry together, the writing is reasonably strong, the story is popcorn fun and the action is well-choreographed. All of these elements combine into a strong summer blockbuster, one that you'd all not be wasting your money to see.

Between this and the Les Grossman antics at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, Cruise seems to be getting himself back out there. And you know what? I'm perfectly okay with that. Read More...

"Eclipse" had its Los Angeles premiere last night and the stars came out. So that happened. MTV got to chat with franchise newcomer Xavier Samuel about his upcoming debut in the popular series, and the young Australian actor talked a little bit about one of his more unlikely influences.

"You're really good at walking out of water, by the way," MTV's Josh Horowitz commented, referring to a moment in one of the trailers when Samuel -- you guessed it -- slowly surfaces, his head rising up out of the water a la "Apocalypse Now." Only it's not the classic Vietnam film that the actor credits as his inspiration. He looked to a more recent example, a sexier example. John McNaughton's "Wild Things." Read More...

We learned earlier this week that "The Last Airbender" director M. Night Shyamalan is already looking towards what's next. The notoriously secretive filmmaker, who has become known for injecting his films with head-turning twists, has reportedly been sending assistants out with the script to studio executives and then having those assistants sit and observe while the reading takes place.

This is Hollywood we're talking about though. Nothing stays secret for long. And Deadline has the scoop on the top-level plot details for what Shyamalan's cooked up. The word is that "Bradley Cooper" -- who is attached to star with Gwyneth Paltrow and Bruce Willis -- "would play a father on a desperate search for his missing child. It might stray into 'Taken' terrain, but the father taps into some supernatural powers to aid the search." Sounds good. Anything that finds comparison with "Taken" works for me. I'll even overlook "The Happening." What do you readers think?

Last night, crowds gathered in Los Angeles to watch the star-studded arrivals at the long-awaited premiere of "Eclipse." Star Taylor Lautner was of course on hand, and of course MTV's Josh Horowitz asked him a little about "Abduction," the John Singleton-directed flick that he'll be moving on to before production starts for "Breaking Dawn" in the fall.

"It's a very real action-thriller," Lautner said. "[It has a] great story, great cast and I start in like three days." Whoa! Three days! He said that last night, which means he'll be on set in roughly 48 hours from now. Read More...

While so many of you were busy watching the "Eclipse" red carpet action last night, I was... well, I was watching that too. But after the red carpet, I flipped over to Comedy Central.

After seven long years of watching rerun after rerun, the Planet Express crew is back in New New York City to bring us all new adventures from the year 3000. Really, 3010. "Futurama" is now officially back on the air. And you know what? It's like they never left. Read More...
