Filmmaker Harald Zwart enjoyed a very nice weekend thanks to the massively successful opening numbers for his latest film, "The Karate Kid." But while he's currently buzzing from the kung fu movie's recent good fortune, Zwart has another interesting project on the horizon: "RollerCoaster Tycoon," based on the computer game franchise of the same name.
"RollerCoaster Tycoon" was announced last month as a possible directing vehicle for Zwart, and the "Karate Kid" filmmaker confirmed for MTV News that he will be stepping behind the lens for the project if all goes according to plan.
"I'm very excited to direct it, yes," he told MTV. "Given that all the planets line up right for it — you never know if a movie gets made — but that's certainly something we're all hoping for." Read more...

When we spoke to "Real Steel" director Shawn Levy back in April, he made it very clear that he wanted curious onlookers to see the upcoming flick as more than just "the robot movie." While giant fighting robots are indeed part of the story, he said that there's much more to it as well.
Levy spoke in broad terms in that interview, describing the movie as a "poignant relationship drama," a "sports movie" and even a "father-child road movie" with themes of redemption. Now we have a more concrete description, in the form of an official synopsis, and a pair of images to go along with it. Check it all out after the jump. Read more...

Greg Grunberg rocks. J.J. Abrams certainly thinks so. The "Heroes" star is the writer/director/producer's good luck charm. He played key roles in "Alias" and "Felicity," was killed off in the pilot episode of "Lost" and had a bit part in "Mission: Impossible III." He also had a voice-only role in "Star Trek," as James Kirk's angry stepdad.
It turns out that Grunberg was originally set for a larger role in "Trek," but other work obligations got in the way. As he said in a recent interview with MTV's Tami Katzoff, "I was doing another film and I couldn’t get out of it to do 'Star Trek.' I was supposed to play Olson, the guy who doesn't pull his chute when they're diving down," he said, referring to a scene near the beginning of the movie. "He's a redshirt so everyone would have known that I was going to die because I die in everything J.J. does, and it would have been so funny! But I couldn’t do it so J.J. had to recast it and I ended up doing the voice of Kirk's dad." Read more...

Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner collaborated in their first non-"Twilight" project together for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards: Les Grossman production "Bad-Ass Cops." Sure, it was meant as a parody and it's never going to be a real thing. But at least one element of that trailer was real: the flamethrower wielded by Pattinson. Hear it straight from the man himself in the below video.

The word "edgy" gets tossed around quite often in connection with high profile reboots. There's no question, for instance, that "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" are "edgier" updates than "Batman & Robin." A more recent example is the announcement of "The Brothers Grimm: Snow White," which also claims to be an "edgy" take on the classic tale — though, in fairness, the Brothers Grimm more or less invented the word. These are "edgy" projects that I can accept.
But is an "edgy" version of "Fraggle Rock" something that anyone wants to see? Apparently, The Weinstein Company thinks so.
"Fraggle Rock" director and writer Cory Edwards took to his blog yesterday to warn his fans that the Weinsteins are searching for a new screenwriter without consulting Edwards. Their one note on his take on the Fraggles? "Not edgy enough." Edwards does not take kindly to this assertion, arguing: "What if 'Toy Story' was edgy? 'Toy Story can be relevant, sharply written and fast paced, but it has a genuine heart and sincere characters. Like 'Toy Story,' Fraggle Rock's success is not only due to its anti-edginess, but in its absolute DEFIANCE of all that is edgy and trendy and pop in this world."
Mr. Edwards, I humbly disagree. Below, find my recommendations for how to make an "edgy" version of "Fraggle Rock" work. Read more...

I'll be honest, "The Book of Eli" kind of lost me when it opened with its main character killing and eating a cat. But if you can overlook that gruesome trait (hey, I get it, times are tough in post-apocalyptic America), then there's a couple hours of Denzel Washington swashbuckling his way through our nation's devastated rural highway system while dodging an evil Gary Oldman (is there any other kind?). The Hughes brothers' film is now arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, and we've got a first look at the bonus content. In the featurette below, Denzel and his sexy co-star Mila Kunis discuss their characters and some of their intricacies.

"Lost" came to an end a few weeks ago, and the wave of discussion it spawned continues to roll outwards. I'm not here to get into any of that though. Instead, I'm bringing you this awesome mashup video from Cracked (via Sci Fi Wire) from the series finale. The scene in which Locke and Jack duke it out on a rainy cliffside is awesome, no doubt. But it is made better here with the addition of TIE Fighters, Force lightning and, of course, lightsabers. "Star Wars" meets "Lost"... this is like a scene out of my pre-afterlife antechamber.

Stay calm everybody. There's no need to panic. Not unless a dessicated corpse is clawing at your head, trying to feast on the sweet, juicy mind grapes contained therein!!!
We all knew this day would come, and now it has. Thanks to the good folks at Newsweek, we now know that a zombie outbreak has occurred. I hope you all read Max Brooks' "The Zombie Survival Guide." And those who have, I hope you're gathering supplies then ascending to the upper floors of the building you live in and knocking out the lower level stairs. Help will come. And if it doesn't... well... all is probably lost anyway.
The powers-that-be are trying to cover this up, but don't be fooled. Go to Newsweek's homepage and type in the "Konami Code" -- up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, [ENTER] -- to get the straight facts. And if you believe all of this, proceed past the jump to learn an even deeper truth. Read more...

The Xbox 360's motion control system previously known as Project Natal received its proper name "Kinect" at E3 on Sunday night. Both James Gunn and Felicia Day were on the front lines getting a look at Microsoft's presentation there and tweeted their reactions.
Back in movie land, "Eclipse" is the big presetation that Twilight followers are paying attention to right now. The increase in the cast's tweeting activity over the last week seems to indicate that they know they're being watched. Peter Facinelli and director David Slade were even kind enough to share some pictures from their travels. You can have a look at those after the jump. There, you'll also find out who's been hanging out with Coheed and Cambria and see who wore a triceratops dress to the "Toy Story 3" premiere.
It's all documented in Twitter-Wood for June 14, 2010. Read more...

Jaden Smith pulled off a miraculous thing this past weekend. That he's only 11 years old makes it even more impressive. Against all odds, a rebooted take on the classic '80s flick "The Karate Kid" attracted almost $60 million worth of audiences in its opening weekend. An impressive start.
Being that Jaden's dad is frequent franchise player Will Smith, how long will it be before we see the little guy popping in his dad's movies? Soon enough! Click the image below to explore Jaden's coming contributions to papa Will's best-known classics!
