Leonardo DiCaprio is having quite a year. A few months ago he starred in Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island," which was predictably entertaining. And in just a few weeks you'll see him again, starring in Chris Nolan's latest sci-fi mind-bender, "Inception." Speaking to the actor at the junket for the July 16 release, MTV's Josh Horowitz learned there's one type of role that DiCaprio really has his heart set on: Vikings.
"I always wanted to do a Viking movie," he said. "I'm a big history buff, and I don't think there's been a really fantastic Viking movie ever made. Those were some of the most barbaric people ever in history."
I would actually argue that there have been some pretty good Viking-oriented examples in entertainment. There's the Monty Python "Spam" sketch of course, and the 2010 CG animated release "How To Train Your Dragon." Also, Nicholas Winding Refn's June release "Valhalla Rising," which I've heard is quite good. Which doesn't mean there isn't room for one more. DiCaprio will get his chance soon enough, as he is tentatively set to star in the next directorial effort from Mel Gibson, an as-yet-untitled Viking movie.
"I'd love to see Mel Gibson's version of that," he said. "Because certainly with 'Apocalypto' and some of the other films he's made, he's been able to transport me back in time unlike very many filmmakers have been able to."
