"Lost" ends this Sunday (May 23), and MTV Movies Blog is celebrating the show's legacy all week long with The Lost Awards, your opportunity to vote on your favorite moments from the hit series! We'll announce new polls every day — so far there's Most Devious Island Dweller, Who's Your Candidate, Most Epic Death, Coolest Island Location and Greatest Love Story — that fans can vote on until Monday (May 24). Winners will be announced that afternoon. Good luck, and as the members of the DHARMA Initiative are so fond of saying, namaste!
One of the reasons that "Lost" has such a hardcore following is the constantly evolving story-line from season to season. Although the characters and the settings remain mostly unchanged from year to year — and even that statement is debatable — there's no question that each season of "Lost" is distinguished from the next due to certain focuses, narrative techniques, overarching genres and more.
It's hard to narrow which season is the greatest considering how different they are from one another, but perhaps it's easier to ask the following: which season was your favorite? After the jump, refresh yourselves on each season of "Lost," then vote for your Favorite Season in the poll!
Season One
The one that started it all. Given the plethora of mysteries including the monster's introduction, the curious french woman, the first appearance of the Others and more, it almost feels wrong to say that the first season was the least complicated of them all — but there was a certain innocence about this year, a "getting-to-know-you" quality that comes from a first date. Season one gave us a multitude of jungle treks, tense situations and growing bonds between the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 to keep us locked into "Lost" for several years to come.
Season Two
The series transformed from spiritual jungle adventure to science fiction thriller with the introduction of Desmond Hume, the DHARMA Initiative and electromagnetic energy. It was hard to get behind a doomsday clock that needed to be reset every 108 minutes, even for John Locke, the ultimate man of faith. But by the time the Swan imploded, the sky turned white, our heroes were kidnapped and Penny got a clue to where the island is located, we couldn't wait to see what was in store for season three.
Season Three
With the hatch fully destroyed, "Lost" was able to regain its spirit of island adventure thanks to a renewed Locke, a deeper look at the Others through Ben and Juliet, and a consummated relationship between Sawyer and Kate. But the sci-fi remained as well: Desmond, now unstuck in time, continually saw future glimpses of Charlie dying, resulting in the ultimate sacrifice of the rock god. The major capper of the season came in the form of the flash-forward: at some point in the future, Jack, Kate and others would leave the island. It was anyone's guess as to how.
Season Four
With flash-forwards in full effect, we learned how the Oceanic Six left the island and what leaving did to their respective psyches. We met the deadly freighter folk, including brilliant-but-troubled Daniel Faraday and ghost-whispering Miles Straume. Although the season was cut short by the writer's strike, we still saw two of the very best "Lost" episodes of all time: "The Constant" and "The Shape of Things to Come." On top of that, the island disappeared into the ocean and Locke's corpse was discovered in the future. For such a short year, season four was one heck of a roller coaster.
Season Five
If things took a turn for the sci-fi in season two, season five took it to infinity and beyond. Our heroes traveled all the way back in time to the days of the DHARMA Initiative, ultimately resulting in the detonation of a nuclear bomb intended to prevent Oceanic Flight 815 from ever crashing on the island. Meanwhile, a seemingly resurrected Locke wasn't Locke at all, but an enigmatic entity with an ancient score to settle with Jacob, the mysterious island mystic who ultimately died at Ben's hands. In other words, Locke was actually dead — a fact that's still hard for many fans to fully accept.
Season Six
The one that ended it all. The show of science returned to its roots as a show of faith with mythological answers involving candidates, holy light and eternally ageless men such as Richard Alpert. Several heroes evolved and others died tragically, while Terry O'Quinn transformed himself from Locke into the smoke monster, one of the single scariest characters that "Lost" has ever seen. The final year hasn't been without some controversy — here's looking at you, sideways universe and "Across the Sea" — but depending on how the finale plays out, season six could go down as the greatest of them all.
