"Lost" ends this Sunday (May 23), and MTV Movies Blog is celebrating the show's legacy all week long with The Lost Awards, your opportunity to vote on your favorite moments from the hit series! We'll announce new polls every day — so far there's Most Devious Island Dweller, Who's Your Candidate, Most Epic Death and Coolest Island Location — that fans can vote on until Monday (May 24). Winners will be announced that afternoon. Good luck, and as the members of the DHARMA Initiative are so fond of saying, namaste!
If the sideways universe of "Lost" has taught us anything, it's this -- love is a powerful thing. Some of our favorite castaways came to the Island already in love, others discovered it through the intensity of their situation while still others haven't fully embraced the concept. But however you want to slice it, there's no denying that there have been some truly powerful romance stories over the course of the soon-to-conclude series.
The question remains, of course: which love story was the most powerful? After the jump, we've listed our nominees for the Greatest Love Story on "Lost."
Charlie & Claire
When Claire first arrived on the Island, many of the other survivors were intimidated by "the pregnant chick." But not Charlie. The drug-addicted rock star immediately took to Claire, offering her imaginary peanut butter and serving as a surrogate father figure to baby Aaron. Although they had their ups and downs, Charlie's love for Claire was pure enough that he ultimately sacrificed his life in order to make Desmond's vision of Claire leaving the Island come true. Sure, it hasn't come true yet, but that sacrifice was one heck of a love letter nonetheless.
Desmond & Penny
One of the greatest characters introduced after the pilot episode, Desmond Hume spent three years living inside of the Swan Station pushing the button every 108 minutes. The only thing getting him through? His fondness for Penny, the beautiful daughter of the ruthless Charles Widmore. Their love is so powerful that it endured through several years, both forwards and backwards in time, as well as through two separate universes. If there's one couple on "Lost" deserving of a happy ending, it's Desmond and Penny.
Jack & Kate
The romance between Jack and Kate has often been one-sided, with the spinal surgeon hopelessly waiting for the fugitive to return his affections. They were briefly engaged after leaving the Island, but their relationship ended when Jack couldn't get over Kate's residual feelings for Sawyer. Now, back on the Island, their romance is jeopardized yet again as Jack is the new Jacob -- does someone like that even have time for love? Jack and Kate's romantic journey tends to hinge on the idea that they can never be together, but it's that unattainable nature that makes their dynamic so compelling.
Jin & Sun
One of few married couples to arrive intact on the Island, Jin and Sun did not enter "Lost" in a good place. You could make the argument that they didn't leave "Lost" in a great place, either, seeing as they drowned in the submarine during the bloody events of "The Candidate." But from the first episode to their dying moments, their relationship matured to a place of mutual appreciation and infatuation with one another, going so far as to produce baby Ji-Yeon together. Given Jin's decision to die with Sun, they won't be winning any parents-of-the-year awards, but their love for one another is certainly undeniable.
Sawyer & Juliet
Unlikely allies who eventually learned to have each other's backs, the pairing of Sawyer and Juliet initially surprised and turned off longtime viewers of "Lost." But that initial skepticism went out the window after fans got to spend a little more time with James and Jules. Thanks to the peace-and-love flower power of the DHARMA days, Sawyer and Juliet had one of the most cool-headed, easy-to-understand romances ever seen before on "Lost." Of course, that got a bit more complicated when Juliet died as a result of falling into a gaping hole, but there's always hope that they'll reconnect in the sideways universe.
Sawyer & Kate
Although Sawyer is currently hung up on Juliet, there's no ignoring his initial infatuation with Kate. The fugitive had so much in common with the conman that it was impossible for her to deny her attraction to Sawyer, try as she might. Even off the Island, she wasn't able to seal the deal with Jack due to her lingering feelings for the long lost James Ford. Now, back on the Island, Kate's feelings for Sawyer are a bit more complicated, particularly given Juliet's death. It might be tough for these two to rekindle their connection, but while they were together, it was definitely something to watch.
