Tony Stark is used to getting what he wants — that's what happens when you own six different versions of the most sophisticated technological suit known to mankind. Luckily, the narcissistic superhero is staying true to his golden reputation with "Iron Man 2," which is shaping up to become Marvel Studios' biggest success to date.
The superhero sequel topped the box office charts this weekend with $133.6 million, a record best for Marvel Studios and distributor Paramount Pictures. But it wasn't a strong enough showing to dethrone "The Dark Knight," Warner Bros.' 2008 comic book adaptation and the current record holder for best opening weekend of all time. Still, the "Iron Man" sequel performed quite nicely as the fifth biggest opening weekend in Hollywood history.
"Iron Man 2" did beat at least one other superhero movie — its own predecessor. Director Jon Favreau's first outing with the red-and-gold armored hero played by Robert Downey Jr. earned $98.6 million in its opening weekend, $35 million below the sequel.
Internationally, "Iron Man 2" held onto the number one spot for the second weekend in a row, this time with $57.2 million from over 10,000 theaters. With $194 million overseas and $133.6 million at the U.S. box office, there's no question that Tony Stark still has what it takes when it comes to Hollywood — and it's only a matter of time before he flies on the big screen again alongside "The Avengers."
The rest of the weekend's top five competitors — yes, there were other competitors, though you would be forgiven for thinking otherwise — racked in a cumulative $25.6 million.
