Carrie Bradshaw got off to a solid start at the weekend box office with a $13 million first place finish on Friday, but her success ended there as a refueled "Shrek Forever After" tapped into its inner ogre to beat "Sex and the City 2" and "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" at the Memorial Day weekend box office. A few weeks back we learned that a Muppets-driven cover of The Guess Who's classic tune "American Woman" would be hitting the Internet in celebration of Memorial Day. It's the latest in a series of web-only music videos from Muppets Studio that also includes last year's hilarious take on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."

In this new one, the ever-patriotic Sam the Eagle shows poor wisdom in selecting a proper song to honor his nation. Good thing no one saw. Oh wait, right... the Internet. Read More...

One of the most anticipated films in development has just lost one of the most gifted directors in the business. After the innumerable delays mostly stemming from MGM's hardships Guillermo Del Toro has decided it's time to move on. "The Hobbit" needs a director.

In statements released to The OneRing on Sunday both Del Toro and Peter Jackson explained what happened. Here is Del Toro in his own words: “In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming 'The Hobbit,' I am faced with the hardest decision of my life. After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand. I’ve been privileged to work in one of the greatest countries on earth with some of the best people ever in our craft and my life will be forever changed. The blessings have been plenty, but the mounting pressures of conflicting schedules have overwhelmed the time slot originally allocated for the project. Both as a co-writer and as a director, I wlsh the production nothing but the very best of luck and I will be first in line to see the finished product. I remain an ally to it and its makers, present and future, and fully support a smooth transition to a new director." Read More...

Another awful day for Hollywood. One of the great actors and filmmakers in cinema's long history, Dennis Hopper died this morning at the age of 74 following a months-long battle with prostate cancer. The star of "Easy Rider" (which he also directed), "Hoosiers," "Blue Velvet" and "Speed," the actor also turned out memorable roles in a range of classics: "Rebel Without A Cause," "Cool Hand Luke," "True Grit," "Apocalypse Now" and even Kevin Costner's 1995 camp-filled flop, "Waterworld."

Let's all take a moment today to pop in "Easy Rider" or just gaze up at the sky and think back on all of the fine entertainment that Hopper brought into our collective lives. Our hearts go out to the great actor's friends and family on this difficult day. Click the image above to view our image gallery, Dennis Hopper: A Life in Photos.

Gary Coleman's death stirred up posts throughout Twitter-Wood this afternoon, both with positive remembrances and commentary on the lifelong issues that childhood actors can face. Ashton Kutcher, Shannon Elizabeth, Tom Arnold and Eliza Dushku counted themselves among Coleman's fans, and many others acknowledged their appreciation for his work as Arnold on "Diff'rent Strokes."

John Stamos touched on the more serious issues in Coleman's in life in his Twitter note, and Ken Jeong and Jon Hurwitz both left simpler notes. Click on past the jump and you can find out who else posted about Coleman. Feel free to leave your own responses and memories in the comment section.

One of the major subplots that runs through the entire "30 Rock" TV series is Liz Lemon's (Tina Fey) uncanny ability to look for love in all the wrong places. There was an interesting development on that front in the recently ended fourth season: Liz met a man while they were both recovering from dentist's gas. They remembered very little of the meeting, but the impression was notable enough that they took down one another's phone numbers in their respective phones as "Future Husband" and "Future Wife." That new man's name is Wesley Snipes, and he is played by none other than Michael Sheen.

As the season wore on, Wesley came to realize that he and Liz were fated to be together as a future marriage of convenience. He reasoned that they were both too old to find "the one," if such a thing exists, and that they were meant to be together simply because they'd found one another, even though there was clearly no chemistry. In the season finale, Liz proved Wesley wrong by finding her ideal man, airline pilot Carol (Matt Damon). Snipes left the scene in a huff, shouting out his final line of the season: "There's only one Wesley Snipes in this world!" Not true, obviously.

So when I spoke with Sheen yesterday about this weekend's HBO movie "The Special Relationship," in which he stars as British Prime Minister Tony Blair, I had to ask him if we've seen the last of the not-so-lovable Wesley Snipes. Read More...

All this week, "X-Men" writer and Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter has been serving as guest editor here on MTV Movies Blog. In daily updates throughout the week, his uniquely extensive background in both the video game and film industries has offered clear insight into the often-troubled interplay between the two mediums. With "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" in theaters today, a very high-profile game adaptation, I thought it might be best to close out the week with a look at the reverse situation: when movies become video games.

Games based on movies do not have a very good history. "The Godfather" was fun, "The Bourne Conspiracy" had some strong moments and few will say that "GoldenEye" was anything less than amazing. By and large though, making a game that's spun off from a movie is a bad move, one likely motivated by money and nothing else. Hayter echoes that as well: it always comes back to the money. "Veronica Mars" was canceled in 2007, but there is still a sizable contingent of fans out there who want to see more of the Kristen Bell-led CW television series. A contingent that isn't large enough, according to producer Joel Silver, who MTV spoke with at the press junket for "Splice."

"We analyzed all these areas about it," he sad. "I talked to [the Warner Bros.] home-video people about it, because a movie like that would be driven by home video. But the home video itself didn't do that well for 'Veronica Mars,' so [the department] didn't feel there was a need or an audience for a direct-to-video 'Veronica Mars,' which could have driven a theatrical release."
